"Everyday perfume"

Oh Lordy lordy - my MIL, not content with the holy grail, has asked for "an everyday perfume" for her birthday! Leaving aside how difficult it is to buy perfume for somebody else, has anybody any excellent suggestions? I know she likes Evelyn Rose bath products (that rosey stuff from Crabtree and Evelyn that makes me heave) and I think she is quite a floral person really...she's 66, very classic and understated in her tastes...help!

L'Air du Temps?
Clinique Happy
Estee Lauder Beautiful

The latter 2 are an aquired taste possibly, but floral. I think L'Air du Temps is lovely and pretty inoffensive. Floral / powdery. I like it and am looking forward to being old so that I can wear it on a more regular basis :)

OK, so the clues are 'everyday perfume' - so not too sexy, or heady - and floral.
And she's classic and understated...

This linky HERE lists fragrances with lots of rose...

First suggestions are:

  • Estée Lauder - pleasures, which is quite pretty and sweet, or Beautiful which is a bit more classic, but maybe a bit bridal.
  • A bit younger, and newer - Stella McCartney. Either the original Stella, or Stella Sheer.

YSL Paris is a pretty rosey smell.

moragbellingham · 17/04/2011 19:20

Armani code was bought for me - it's nice and so understated that I can barely smell it, very inoffensiveConfused

My mil likes anais anais (I hate it and it is quite flowery). It's often on offer in Boots. :)

Theantsgomarching · 17/04/2011 19:23

Dolce and Gabbana light blue is lovely

bigbadbarry · 17/04/2011 19:30

Thanks - I wondered about Anais Anais but then thought we might try something new. I can see I'll have to go and sniff some ... Will take your lists. Will end up with a confused headache - and something I like even if she doesn't! ( although I can't bear rose
scents unless they come from real roses)

Some of the other perfumes mentioned are really lovely but your mil may consider them rather expensive for "everyday"

DonaAna · 17/04/2011 19:40

Classic Burberry - soft, inoffensive, delicious. Stella is a nice rose smell but gave me a very bad rash.

Neena28 · 17/04/2011 20:01

Ck's newish one 'beauty' is a lovely perfume.

emsyj · 17/04/2011 20:03

Stella is very very 'rose' but gives me a bit of a headache.

Have you tried Diorissimo? It is a Lily of the valley scent, very floral.

goingmadinthecountry · 17/04/2011 20:08

Jo Malone Lime and Basil is my everyday perfume - either that or Clarins which my very chic Fench stepmother really likes and wears as her I'm just popping out fragrance.

goingmadinthecountry · 17/04/2011 20:09

Body Shop do a Gardenia fragrance that everyone seems to like - may suit?

MrsSeanBean · 17/04/2011 20:10

I second Diorissimo btw - divine imo, had forgotten that one.

Tillyscoutsmum · 17/04/2011 20:42

Jo Malone are lovely day time perfumes imho. They do a Red Roses one which might suit or Vintage Gardenia might be her sort of thing as well.

tulpe · 17/04/2011 20:44

If she likes rose aromas, buy her Paul Smith Rose. I cannot abide "fake" rose aromas and this is as close to Rose Otto oil (the true essential oil) and lovely old rose aromas as you will find.

I wear it as my "everyday" scent too.

Leverkusen · 17/04/2011 20:45

marc jacobs daisy is quite an inoffensive, floral smell

noddyholder · 17/04/2011 20:46

Aqua di Parma iris is lovely

noddyholder · 17/04/2011 20:47

Agree re Paul smith Rose it is the only Rose IMO and gets nicer as the day goes on

Love the idea of a "just popping out fragrance" :)

Jo Malone is absolutely the way forwards if you can justify price (gone up to £68 a bottle now - not impressed) - find a scent she likes and you can then get her candles/body creams/shower gel/bath oil until the cows come home. My mum, sister and I all use it. My mum (mid fifties) uses Pomegranate Noir as her everyday perfume - I find it too heavy and only use it on winter nights out. My sister (23) has just switched from Nectarine Blossom and Honey to their new one, English Pear and Freesia which is my "popping out fragrance" (I got both in travel sizes as presents and have had to find times to use them) and my favourite is still Nectarine Blossom and Honey (I'm 21).

They normally have little sample vials in the shops so you could maybe beg a few and get approval before you buy a whole bottle?

EasterChickAndRabbitKurri · 17/04/2011 22:19

Sarah Jessica Parker is floral and not to overwhelming - I use it for 'everyday' and I'm well into middle age Grin, - it is sparkly though which some people might not like.

EasterChickAndRabbitKurri · 17/04/2011 22:20

sorry that should be SJP Lovely
