How shall I dress my 14 year old (slightly goth) daughter for a wedding?

DD1 is 16 and only wears black(!). We are going to a wedding in August but she is refusing to wear colour. DD2 (10) and DS1 (8) are fine.

This for DD

and DS is wearing simple beige linen shorts and waiscoat with a white shirt.

I am at the end of my tether with DD1, please help!

I love all these 50s rockabilly dresses.

That TedBaker one is awful, looks cheap and nasty, can't believe it's £200.

You're not going to let her choose at all are you?

Loads of fab appropriate dresses have been linked here.

bristolcities · 17/04/2011 10:42

this, expensive but very pretty with a bit of an edge.

French connection

this

this one is great.

In fact French Connection have loads of brilliant, very pretty black dresses.

bristolcities · 17/04/2011 10:43

I thing the Ted Baker dress is great but maybe a little grown up.

bristolcities · 17/04/2011 10:43

bristolcities · 17/04/2011 10:47

miss selfridge, lovey and in the sale.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 17/04/2011 17:33

No way can a 14yo wear a dress from Phase8 - sorry but that looks like something that wouldn't be out of place at the British Legion.

The Asos lacy one is best of the bunch, followed by the Miss Selfridge.

Cheap alternative to the FC one from Republic.

Skater dress - bit dull.

TheSmallClanger · 17/04/2011 17:47

Lots of nice black dresses around - I like the FC/Republic style ones the best.

That Ted Baker one is too old for a 14 year old - it is the sort of thing an early 30something woman would wear.

What sort of figure does she have?

NotAgainFrank · 17/04/2011 17:49

maybe

too long?

utter bargain

Acanthus · 17/04/2011 17:54

Oh teenagers often look a bit awkward and uncomfortable at weddings, it's par for the course. Let her choose something she 'll feel ok in, if she's embarrassed by it in later years that's normal too! Someone came to mine in a red chunky sweater - she was about 16 IIRC!

piprabbit · 17/04/2011 17:57

biut? bit! sorry

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2011 18:12

I really like so many of these dresses, but it's really not the time of year to be shopping for black dresses (for me, anyway :))

CadburysChocolate · 17/04/2011 19:47

Well, we've had an 'eventful' shall we say, day of shopping, with success though! We bought three dresses:
This one is a bit more casual, but DD loved so I bought it for her (not for wedding)

We also bought this not for wedding either though!

And this for the wedding

Wow you DS is one lucky girl!

Your thread title had me in awe... a woman who is capable of dressing her teenaged dd....
wow.

Cattleprod · 17/04/2011 21:08

Two of your links are to the same dress, Cadbury. But aside from the mystery dress, you spent £450 on clothes for your DD!! Shock Shock Shock

IAmTheCookieMonster · 17/04/2011 21:17

my cousin's teenager came to my wedding reception with black lipstick on! I'd let her choose her own dress.

IAmTheCookieMonster · 17/04/2011 21:18

ooh you've been, i love the sparkly dress!

MigratingCoconuts · 17/04/2011 21:21

love that second dress! I think those would both be great for a wedding...

CadburysChocolate · 17/04/2011 21:31

Sorry! Third link should be to this
We added a patent belt and black heels. (The dress is longer on her than it looks)
