Went into River Island today (because I saw they had a 3-10 years section) and there, in front of me, was a big sign saying CHELSEA GIRL.

And there was the same logo with the girl with curly hair looking downwards (like sort of coy Dr White's advert).

I was transported back to my youth going round Chelsea Girl on a Saturday with my mum... I actually had teary eyes. The shop girls must have wondered who this mad old bat was who was sullying their trendy emporium.

Martin Ford was the fashion mecca when i was at school.. I remember my 'best outfit' of navy corduroy skirt with press studs down the sides (the boys learnt to rip it off, Bucks Fizz style!) Blush and a Lady Di style blouse which inexplicibably had a detachable polka dot bow tie..

WhatsWrongWithYou - wow I didn't realise Richard Shops had a song and everything Grin

brookeslay · 03/04/2011 13:13

lunacticfringe no it was like a pre cursor to juicy. It was pink ... It driving me up the wall now not remembering....

DilysPrice · 03/04/2011 13:28

I had ruched grey suede pixie boots. They were my pride and joy.
I hung out in Chelsea Girl so much, but I think the only thing I actually possessed from them was a pair of baggy striped cotton trousers with buttons for braces which I bought in a charity shop in about 1996 for a 1980s fancy dress party. I still have a baggy acrylic jumper from Pineapple at Top Shop though.

Brookeslay - Pamplemousse?

gramercy · 03/04/2011 14:07

ooh, 5 pages on "my" thread! I don't think I've ever done so well Grin

i think my fave Chelsea Girl item was a red 1940s-style dress. I had studiously copied the look from the fashion spread in Jackie magazine. I wore the dress to many a scout-hall disco...

I was on the YTS at Richard shops, back in 1986.I still wear a pink cotton shirt that was part of my staff uniform at the time.

Today I stunned DH by telling him that the fingerless mittens I wear for work were bought in 1984,when Madonna first hit the charts. They are neon orange and still going strong after all those years.

I am going to have to go into town purely to see if there is a CG in our River Island.

adamschic · 03/04/2011 21:19

Mirage, so how did the YTS scheme work out for you Grin.

SlightlyJaded · 03/04/2011 22:58

Pamplemousse! Oh my goodness, had completely forgotten Pamplemousse.

And then the company that made pastel sportswear... Ah ha yes, 'Dash!'

Nice.

Mirage · 04/04/2011 08:27

Adamschic, you know what-it was fine.GrinI actually chose to go on it because they paid your bus fares, and you had a day off at 'college' so I was slightly better off on the YTS,than on a normal school leaver's wage.I didn't end up staying at Richards as they didn't have any vacancies,so got moved to Lewises Dept store opposite and worked for them for years afterwards.

All this cuts/recession business has got me thinking about the YTS again.I wonder if the govt will bring it back again? It got a load of stick from people in the 80's,but everyone I know who went on one,did really well.

The poster who mentioned Dash,he he,I used to work opposite the Dash and Together concessions and remember all that 'leisure clothing' stuff very well.I was astonished to to see a Dash shop somewhere recently,I'm surprised they are still in business, they seem very dated and I can't imagine who their market would be now.

adamschic · 04/04/2011 13:08

I went on one in the 70's and did ok out of it too. There is currently an apprenticeship scheme, full time with day release £2.50 an hour. Not quite a style and beauty topic.

lololizzy · 04/04/2011 18:21

there is a shop in New Malden called Tudor Williams which is a real old skool dept store and carries some very 80s type labels (but frumpy type), have a feeling there might be Dash!

legoqueen · 04/04/2011 18:29

Chelsea Girl in the Lewisham Centre, late 70s, desparately wanting skintight jeans, getting a Fruit of the Loom sweatshirt...

aStarWithHerOwnWays · 04/04/2011 18:51

Another one who has been carried off on waves of nostalgia by this thread. I used to haunt the Lewisham Chelsea Girl with a look of longing on my face, wishing I had any idea how to look that cool. The day I bought a ra-ra skirt from there was one of the most exciting of my young life. I believe it was newsprint fabric with a wide stretchy elastic waistband.

Later on (the start of my hippy phase) there was the sky blue tie-dyed crop top and ankle length skirt combo from Mark One that I coveted for months and finally got from my mum. They were the softest cotton.

MrsDeVere so true about What She Wants leggings, no lycra at all. I looked like I was wearing two brownish-grey sacks on my legs.

Also had a black silk Charlotte Halton dress with an exposed zip up the front, very now, bought from the paddle steamer-era River Island. Wish I'd kept it tbh.

I had a Saturday job at CG too! Bloody 'orrible manager we had. Smile
