Went into River Island today (because I saw they had a 3-10 years section) and there, in front of me, was a big sign saying CHELSEA GIRL.

And there was the same logo with the girl with curly hair looking downwards (like sort of coy Dr White's advert).

I was transported back to my youth going round Chelsea Girl on a Saturday with my mum... I actually had teary eyes. The shop girls must have wondered who this mad old bat was who was sullying their trendy emporium.

i know! i loved it too! too old now Sad
Do you remember though when all their labels said Charlotte Halton instead of River Island? Don't know why. But i still wear a floral CH frock

LovelyDaffs · 01/04/2011 19:53

I thought River Island was Chelsea Girl rebranded. I used to tell everyone at school that I shopped at Chelsea Girl, but I couldn't afford it, by the time I could I realised that it was cheap crap.

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 19:54

what was the male equiv of Chelsea Girl>>
hang on a mo...wracking brain..........
It was CONCEPT MAN!!!! lol. i actually used to buy from there as well as CG as was such a lanky teen and men's styles were good on me for length.
My brother still wears my old striped CM top!!!
wow. Concept Man. what a name that conjures up.

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 19:55

Concept Man was in the same store, i should add.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/04/2011 20:00

Concept Man? lolol

We definitely didn't have a Concept Man. I can't imagine who would shop there!

Surely the equivalent should have been Camden Bloke or Croydon Guy?

WhatsWrongWithYou · 01/04/2011 20:03

We had a Concept Man but I honestly can't remember ever seeing any guys in there! ('Twas Liverpool though Smile).

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 20:04

ha! i cannot believe he still wears it, though it isn't a bad top..just v ancient!
can imagine at the ad agency back then...what sums up today's 80s man...hmmmm...CONCEPT MAN!!! yep, that'll work!!

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 20:04

I loved the CM jumpers as CG ones were always way too short on me.

RIZZ0 · 01/04/2011 20:08

Blast from the past innit?!

Have already bought this dress and I flippin love it.

SlightlyJaded · 01/04/2011 20:09

Yes to Chelsea Girl
Yes yes yes to Clocjhouse, C&A. Many a Saturday afternoon in Kingston pawing batwing jumpers and ra ra skirts
And also 'What She Wants' which was so downmarket it made Chelsea Girl look classy

MayorNaze · 01/04/2011 20:20

i had a very snazzy wasitcoat from clockhouse

and black cord ski pants with the stirrup under the foot

my my i was hot

Grin
cocolepew · 01/04/2011 20:23

I still sometimes casll River Island CG. My DDs hate me. I somehow feel vindicated now.

cocolepew · 01/04/2011 20:24

I had cords with stirrup. Unfortunately the were a bit short in the leg and I had great trouble bending my knees.

SleepyCaz · 01/04/2011 20:26

OMG!!!! :)

catinthehat2 · 01/04/2011 20:28

Miss Selfish Selfridge

Never any clothes on the hangers, all kind of ankle deep across the floor

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 20:41

who remembers when CG turned into River Island? it was all deep south/ Mississippi river boat style , shop interiors were like paddle steamers ( i can't remember how exactly but that sticks in my head? there was a lot of pale wood fittings i recall), they played Billie Holliday and old pictures were on the walls..quite cool at the time

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 20:42

i work in a charity shop and a lot of blast from the pasts come in... eg Yessica and Clockhouse (both C&A) have yet to see CG though...

AintMissBeehiving · 01/04/2011 20:43

I had cords with stirrups too. By God we must have looked todally gorgeous. Wink

I also had a pair of black cord trousers witha kind of tartan frill thing around the waistband with cord braces. And a puffball. Not cord though obv. That would have just been awful.

lololizzy · 01/04/2011 20:46

who remembers Snob?? i still have my old wardrobe at my parents house and it has some Snob hangers in it!

AintMissBeehiving · 01/04/2011 20:51

I remember Snob. It was very sophisticated IIRC.

tulpe · 01/04/2011 20:53

Yay for Chelsea Girl :o

My DSis (who is 7 years older than me) had a saturday job there. I scored so many cool points at school as a result cos she let me wear her stuff to the school disco.

The first thing I ever bought from there was a pale grey pencil skirt that finished about 4 inches above my ankle. I wore it proudly with slouchy socks and winkle pickers Sadly, I tripped up on the pavement one day and split my skirt all the way up to the zip......it was like that for an hour until I noticed Blush and even then it was only cos some girl called me a slag!!

It was also provided girls with a good supply of navy wool skirts which finished at the ankle with a fake broderie anglaise underskirt showing beneath (circa 1982, iirc).

I had totally forgotten about the Charlotte Halton label - that would have been around 1989 I think. And yes, I remember all the beach-chic fittings in the RI stores when they first opened.

tulpe · 01/04/2011 20:58

And am LMAO at the Clockhouse label memories. One particularly stunning item which springs to mind was a peach jacket with over-stuffed shoulder pads (made you look like that Kenny Everett american soldier character...old gimmer emoticon). I wore it with a matching peach tube skirt and....wait for it.......black stilettos from Jonathan James for £4.99

Talk about crimes against fashion......... :o

higgle · 01/04/2011 21:02

Oh, chelsea Girl, I remember the knitwear, it all had angora in it and had a particular sort of smell. I had a yellow blouse and a brown wrap around skirt I was wearing fo rmy first kiss, and a black midi skirt and cardigan the year they were first fashionable. Happy days.

Buda · 01/04/2011 21:02

I so wanted to be able to shop in Chelsea Girl. It wasn't in Dublin though.

Yessica and Clockhouse are still going strong though. C&A is stil operating in Europe. Lots of them in Hungary.

dearprudence · 01/04/2011 21:09

I had some corduroy knickerbockers from Chelsea Girl. I probably saw them in Just Seventeen magazine.
