Please talk me through scarves and how to wear them

Everyone is wearing scarves these days as an accessory and looking very glamourous. I feel I have to start playing catch up and get a few in my wardrobe. Are there any dos and don'ts about scarf wearing? Can you wear them with Converse or just boots?

I'm not normally a fashion sheep btw, but I do like the look and think it would suit me. Thanks.

Hi chicaguapa.
have a look at this.
If you scroll down on the right hand side there are lots more examples.

woopsidaisy · 30/03/2011 12:17

I use http://www.youtube.com/user/libertylondon#p/u/20/p0VLKKIgriU this one lots.

woopsidaisy · 30/03/2011 12:17

Hmmmm.
this one.

otchayaniye · 30/03/2011 13:22

I'd check out sartorialist.com

Although there are lots of fashion types on there, they aren't all fashion industry people, there are older women, hipsters, weirdos, even a couple of homeless -- all sorts.

I look at that site almost daily. There are loads of scarf wearers on it as he photos people on the street.

I like fur stoles as scarves, thin chiffon ones, rolled silk squares, huge billowing mohair ones etc.

I think Hermes does a pdf guide on specific tying.

Lovely thank you! I'm getting an absolute slating on another thread at the moment, so it's like a breath of fresh air coming over to here and seeing the nice friendly responses. Somewhat restores my faith in mn. Wink

i love scarves, i buy them all the time and wear them everyday. though not in such detailed ways as on those links... mostly i buy them from primark, h&m and supermarkets (cheap & cheerful me) and wear them mostly with plain t-shirts and jeans. at the moment i like square ones folded to a triangle - i have a big black, white & grey print one from h&m on today. go for it!

moragbellingham · 30/03/2011 15:33

I'm becoming slightly pre-occupied with themHmm. I've bought a few as I wear very plain, non-fussy clothes and it brightens them up (I sound like my mother).

House of Fraser online have a good range - but I sent alot back as some arrive and they're a bit meh. Mango,Zara,Oasis for cheap ones......then the expensive silk ones start to catch your eye.

chicaguapa · 30/03/2011 16:25

I wear a lot of plain clothes as well and brighten/ dress them up with necklaces. That's obviously very old fashioned now. Blush

Are they ok to wear with Converse style shoes/ wedges? Or do they look best with snazzy boots. Unfortunately my legs don't allow me to wear skinny jeans with high boots, but I usually wear a heel on ankle boots (under my jeans).

Depends on the scarf and also the shoe.

I have recently bought a big Lily & Lionel scarf and I just love it (wore it to work today - work is casual so I could wear jeans, a cashmere jersey, ballet flats and the scarf).

I think a great scarf that flatters your skin tone is a great way to dress up an all-black or all neutrals outfit. (I think a lot of French women intuitively do that.)

Some scarves are very casual (think bandana and keffieyh), others extrely formal (Hermes etc.) I just saw a lovely coral reef print Bulgari scarf at an airport duty free shop - can't wait I hit 70 and can wear them all the time..

dumbelina · 30/03/2011 16:58

Have you seen this hermes pdf ?

pantaloons · 30/03/2011 17:03

I am a huge scarf obsessive and have ones I can wear with boots (long and folded over then tucked through) and more casual ones (normaly square, folded diagonally then wrapped round). I tend wear a patterned scarf to match with a cardi or some coloured tights with a white t shirt or a plainer one and a patterned top.

Sad really, but I think it really changes an outfit without braking the bank. Primarni often have some nice ones as do M&S.

chicaguapa · 30/03/2011 17:12

I feel inspired to hit the shops. Thanks everyone. Smile

Look up the liberty scarf tying videos on you tube

chicaguapa · 31/03/2011 11:19

Thank you! All your replies have been exactly what I was hoping for. I'm going shopping this afternoon on a scarf buying frenzy and will do the school run this afternoon as a swish fashionista. Grin

try zara, oasis for some nice ones that are affordable but material is quite nice. H&M do even cheeper versions.
of course you can wear with jeans and trainers you can wear them very casually with a top or cardi or to smarten up with a blazer.
no rules Wink

MrsMc82 · 31/03/2011 17:59

The liberty tutorials on you tube are a revalation - never have quite got the hang of wearing my many scarfs in that casually-thrown-on-but-looks-fab-way withouh them looking shit but its so easy!

MikeRotch · 31/03/2011 18:01

i was in zara today

got a grey lopard one

they also had v nice spots

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 31/03/2011 18:06

Scarves are fab.

Started to wear them more after having my colours done.

Really cheap way to look something plain look good for next to no money.

Believe in getting the right coloured ones personally rather than the quality - right colours can really light your face up.

Greate cheap ones at H&M, occasionally Primarni - would never pay more than £20 - have some great ones that were only £3 - £8.

TracyK · 31/03/2011 19:07

I ordered this one for Spring - am hoping it will look nice with a denim jacket.www.brandalley.co.uk/FSRayon/Id-6887-Produit-61056-Rayon-481473

There are other nice ones if you go 'back' to the sales listing.

chicaguapa · 31/03/2011 21:05

Hurrah! I bought a lovely one in Oasis (20% off for no reason) and a brown animal print one in Zara, though they seem to have the exact same one in M&S Hmm. Saw the spots one in Zara, very nice too, was going to get it before I saw the brown one. I tend to wear cardigans with a vest under so the scarves go very well. Someone commented tonight at the school disco that they liked the unusual way I'd tied it. So thanks for the Oversized scarf link as that's the way I did it. Smile

I am a big scarf wearer - love em, especially for work

my guide for work

big long floppy ones, tie round a few times (like a bit in that first video) and let them hang loose

non heavy ones (like the light silk ones), tie with the knot or the double scarf way (like you'd wear a winter scarf)

I haven't got any scarf pins but have seen a few I fancy for work

scarves are great! I like the long glamorous ones the best

chicaguapa · 31/03/2011 21:08

TracyK that looks like a nice site. You can PM me if you'd like to 'invite me' and get £10. Grin
