another wedding guest asking for help

Hello, please help.
I've a family May wedding to go to, I'm newly single and want to feel in control and confident.

Here's the dress I've bought:www.oasis-stores.com/Sequin-Embellished-Maxi-Dress/Maxi-Dresses/oasis/fcp-product/4470072119.

I know it's a bit dull but I hate to show my cankles, rugby player legs and fishwife arms. They really are bad, people comment.

I'm 40, 5'3", size 10, 34d, brown messy bob, sallow skin and green/brown/gold eyes.

I need to dress it up with the accessories.
Can you help find jewelry, handbag and shoes, preferably wedges. Any make-up tips would be great too.

I can't make out from the picture - are the sequins gold, or are they more of a metallic bronze kind of colour?

runforthehill · 21/03/2011 20:04

Hello, thank you for checking it out Scotsgirl, they're a metallic bronze colour, sort of brown/copper, they're quite nice, sewn like fish scales.

I'd be tempted to go for something contrasting (there isn't much around in the bronze!) - fuschia and jade green can both look quite nice against navy? I like the shape of the dress but I think you need to brighten it up a little

runforthehill · 21/03/2011 20:27

there isn't is there, I've been trying!
I really your green idea, when I wear green it makes my eyes look more green that the odd speckled colour they are.

I'd go for some pretty flat sandals in gold/bronze. And gold jewellry. A bold necklace and earrings. Treat yourself to hair/makeup at a salon and a mani/pedi with a bright jewel colour.

runforthehill · 21/03/2011 21:23

I do like the bronze ones fauxfox, but I'm a size six. Skinny feet with finger toes.
Maryland, I like your ideas a lot, want to glam up

OP posts:
maryjane71 · 21/03/2011 21:37

The dress is plain enough - in the nicest possible way - to get away with jazzing up the accessories a bit.
If you've got large norks - not used that term before! Smile - I think wearing wedges will makes you look like you are about to topple over. And flats are easier to walk around in, especially if you have to walk on grass - for the photos at least.
Do let us know what you decide OP.
Oh, and if you went to a salon for your makeup, they could apply green eyeshadow for instance, something you probably don't usually wear.

runforthehill · 22/03/2011 19:25

Maryjane, I think you're right, I have these unworn new flipflops www.office.co.uk/womens/havaianas/slim_flip-flop/60/4887/17901/1/ would they be too casual?

I've made an appointment for my hair, will try to get a boots lacome make-up done for the day, she's brilliant.

I think an amber necklace might work, please could someone point out a nice one for me?

Please, please help me look superglam, I'm the only single parent in the family so want to show them!

I have the slims in silver runfor, and wear them in the evening on holiday usually. As for being too casual it depends on the wedding venue. I went to a wedding last summer and all the ladies wore maxis and flipflops, and very lovely they looked too! But it was held in a marquee and the wedding 'breakfast' was a bbq etc.

As for amber jewellry I always go to Accessorize first. Hopefully one of the cleverer MNers will come along with some links.

There is nothing wrong with being a single parent - you have nothing to prove Smile

pink4ever · 22/03/2011 20:17

Sorry I think those flip-flops are too casual(but I think the dress is beautiful!-not dull at all, very classy and I am temtped to get it myself!). You need flats with a bit of bling.Cant do links but zara have some lovely ones in(I got a gold pair last year and wore them to death).

teahouse · 22/03/2011 20:44

I've just been to a wedding as almost the only single person there, and certaonly the only single parent. It was fine though-made an effort and boogied with the best of them.
Go and enjoy yourself - be proud of who you are and if people ask, them them you're a single mum.

runforthehill · 22/03/2011 20:46

Thank you maryjane, I love flipflops, my feet are too skinny for a lot of other types of sandals. The wedding has a disco, I won't dance, will have my 3 sons with me (proud mum- they're at uni and athletic) and I dance like a honky tonk woman! I'm glad you like the dress, its a lovely fabric.

I've never tried Zara Pink4, v. impressed, found these www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/uk/en/zara-S2011/61144/238757/CROSSOVER%2BFLAT-SOLE%2BSANDAL but would have to try them on.

I've also found these www.dune.co.uk/catalogue/style.asp?y=S11LLE92SDF0027&pc=92&r=43&g=52&s=84 they are bling, but £70! are they worth it do you think?

I do have another wedding to go to in July, not family, so relaxed and fun.

I think the flip flops are too casual too. The dress is simple but very "dressy" and so needs some seriously glam shoes to go with it try asos - some nice heels but also some v glam flats:

gold wedges

gold platforms

gold flats

more gold flats

pettyprudence · 22/03/2011 20:59

cross posted - ohh the zara and the dune ones are both v nice!

maryjane71 · 22/03/2011 21:13

runfor, I'd go for the Dune ones, they are lovely, or either of the ones pettyp suggested. Your 3 DSs are successful and strapping young men and you are a very proud mum. What else do you need to do to 'show them'? And don't you dare not have a dance! Grin

runforthehill · 22/03/2011 21:15

Hello Teahouse, I have loved being a single parent, brought my boys up exactly how I wanted to, it was so much easier after I left my husband.

Wow Prettyp, those are some glam sandals, I love the last ones the most, also makes me feel less excessive liking the Dune ones. I'm going to try to rush into Dune at lunchtime tomorrow for a try on.

check out the sparkly bags and shoes here. They would be perfect for adding some glitz to your outfit.

DarkSkies · 22/03/2011 21:21

Whatever is a honky tonk woman and how does she dance please? Confused

runforthehill · 22/03/2011 21:43

oh, Maryjane, I can't, I'd embarrass my boys.

Darkskies, a honky tonk woman dances in bars for money, like the song. In my much younger days, I used to hate men, and dance to make them sweat, I was offered jobs in those places. My feet move a little, my hips a lot.

Iloveshoes, thank you, that site looks good but as McAfee wimp, did not explore more (I need the green tick).

OP posts:
DarkSkies · 22/03/2011 21:52

Grin Thank you runfor!

That dancing sounds okay though....

maryjane71 · 22/03/2011 21:56

You won't embarrass your boys at all! They'll just see their lovely mum ENJOYING HERSELF. Much more attractive than any dress, shoes or jewellry imo. If you were offered a job you must be bloody good Envy Go for it Smile

I love the dress, it's very on trend and the colour, cut and materials are the kind that'll flatter anyone.

I'd go for copper jewellery, rather than gold, as that'll look harsh in contrast to the colour of the sequins and detract from the dress rather than complementing it. This place has some nice designs that would complement that dress exceptionally well, they also take commissions and they're very reasonably priced, so you should be able to find something perfect there: www.ailleasdesigns.com/gallery.html
