Straighteners - which ones do you use/recommend?

JonesTheSteam · 25/10/2005 13:39

Currently have some Babyliss Straighteners which are ceramic coated (I think!!) - cost about 24 quid about a year ago.

My hair is very thick and about shoulder length and quite wavy (when it's not been straightened!!). My straighteners do the job, but after a while my hair tends to revert back to it's natural wavy state.

Is it worth forking out for much better straighteners, like those ghd ones? Has anyone bought these from e-bay? Are they any good?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

TIA

lol lillibet

puff · 25/10/2005 15:56

cod - but fright night hair cannot be in fashion - so what's a girl to do {grin]?

lilibet · 25/10/2005 16:03

I wouldn't mind if my hair was curly, or had a nice wave, but it's jsut hideous!!

I look at other women's hair and wish mine could be like that - at the moment I like Lulu's, but I know that it would take so much work and at the moment I have washing, drying and straightening down to 20 mins.

It's not overly straightenend, just has the horrid frizz taken out.

puff · 25/10/2005 16:06

same here lilibet - mine is fine for 2 hours after wash/blow dry, then it's a scruffy not straight/not wavy/not curly hedgerow.

doormat · 25/10/2005 16:09

If i dont use my straighteners my hair looks like something from The Darkness

puff · 25/10/2005 16:10

rofl doormat !!!!!!!

Does anyone know if I should go for the small or large GHD's?

spookyserenity · 25/10/2005 16:20

I've got these ones from Remington that you use on wet hair. I've got long 'bra strap' length har and I can get it straight and dry in about 20 minutes. It seem to last longer too, I suppose as it's never had the chance to dry kinky!?

JonesTS - ditto with the whole hair growing thing. I've had my hair cut short so many times because it just doesn't behave when it's long. Straightners are wonderful. I've never been concerned about being fashionable before so I'm not going to start by giving them up now!

GHDs are fab! No complaints. They can tame thick frizzy hair in no time. They also heat up to a higher temperature than other brands so definitely go for them. Got mine from Miss Groovy a few years ago so not sure where the best prices are now. Happy straightening!

spookyserenity · 25/10/2005 16:22

Sorry puff. I bought the slim ones as they were the only ones my catalogue did and they are fine. I'd imagine it would be quicker with fat ones, but tbh I can't imagine it'll make that much difference.

The odd times I've had my hair straightened at the hairdressers they've used slim GHDs.

lilibet · 25/10/2005 16:22

I have the narrow ones but always think that the wide ones look better and would be quicker

spooklymieow · 25/10/2005 16:28

I have remington telfon-coated cremic ones. They work well.

puff · 25/10/2005 16:38

ok, thanks - will compare prices and decide. I am sooooooooooo fed up with my barnet.

JonesTheSteam · 25/10/2005 18:24

Think you'd probably get away with the slim ones - they seem to be OK for fine hair. I'm going to have to save up for the wide ones (which of course, seem to be more expensive!!!)

spookyserenity - hooray someone else like me!!!

The only time I've ever had long hair was when I got married - grew it, had it blow dried straight on my big day, and then had it cut short again 2 days later before my honeymoon!!!

Always been much easier to manage shorter, but I'm so sick of having short hair!!! Have been growing it for over a year now and straighteners have been a godsend!!!!!!

Sorry meant to say Puff - think you'd probably get away with the slim ones!

Can only recommend GHD - no other straighteners beats them - they are fabulous. I got mine from ebay and I got wide plates.

Gobbledispook · 25/10/2005 19:01

Puff - I could have written your first post!!

My hair is shoulder length at the mo - it's fine (but I've got a lot so it's not wispy iykwim) and I have wide plate. I'd go for the wide plate. I wasn't sure like you but in the end I thought no point spending however many pounds on medium or slim if they turned out to be crap and it wasn't that much more for the wide plate. I think I got them for about £97 from ebay.

puff · 25/10/2005 19:02

I know people say that ghd's straighten your hair and it lasts through the next day ie, after you've slept on it a night, but is this really true?????????

I just don't want to shell out for another set of straighteners that don't do the job.

I have Jo Brand hair - it is getting serious!!!

ja9 · 25/10/2005 19:03

i have wide plate ones too and i'm pleased with them. but... i was wondering if i had got narrow plate ones would i be able to give my hair long ringlets as supposedly can be done with straighteners..

ja9 · 25/10/2005 19:04

yep, its true.

puff · 25/10/2005 19:05

Ok, I am finally convinced - it's only taken me a year to decide

Gobbledispook · 25/10/2005 19:05

Puff - it's true. I straightened mine this morning and I've been out in the wind and now I've combed it, it's straight still. It will still be straight in the morning. Honestly!

My babyliss straighteners would straighten the hair but it would only last a couple of hours then it would dry out and frizz up again.

The GHD ones get so hot they steam as you put the hair through - no other straighteners I've had have done that. You need to put a protecting thing on your hair (spray or gel) so you don't burn it.

cadburygirl · 25/10/2005 19:07

I've got the GHD straightener. I've had it for two years and wouldn't ever think about replacing them.

Gobbledispook · 25/10/2005 19:07

Puff, I ummmed and ahhhed like you, because they were expensive, but honestly - I really recommend them. I can finally wear my hair down rather than in a pony tail all the time! BUY SOME!

puff · 25/10/2005 19:07

Flippin eck, they sound miraculous.

Is there some oil you have to buy to keep the plates in good condition - I've seen it on ebay.

WitchyWhizzz · 25/10/2005 19:09

I bought Revlon Straight & Dry - my hair sounds like yours JonesTS. They are better than ceramic coated as it seems to stay straighter for longer - but really I wish I'd splashed out on GHDs
