I can hardly believe it myself, but I did!

I went to a seminar on "intimate male waxing' at the Professional Beauty show at the Excel Centre in London which featured a man having every hair in his pubic area waxed off. Everything.

The seminar was run by BABTEC and was extremely well executed - in other words, it wasn't a perv-fest. The session was intended for beauty professionals to learn how to overcome the fears and anxieties of performing an intimate male wax. The therapist (male) was fantastic and explained everything in the most professional possible way. The model was funny and friendly under the circumstances of having to literally bear all. He even got on all fours and had his bum waxed in front of 50 people. What a brick. He winced a few times but otherwise, managed the pain ok.

My interest in attending the seminar was to learn about pain management during an intimate wax. I asked the therapist during the Q & A about pain management and his answer was basically that " the best pain management is having a good relationship between the therapist and the client". He really didn't want to discuss it.

Hmmmm.

I'm interested to know the following things:

Do you use anything to reduce pain during waxing?
Do you think waxing hurts?
Is it becoming normal for men to wax their privates?

I spoke to a doctor recently who told me that she rarely sees female patients under the age of 30 with any pubic hair. As I'm well over 40, I am not of that era. I find bikini waxing painful and I think I have a solution for it which I am considering importing. I just don't think that the professionals are interested. But are the consumers?

Would you buy a product that could reduce your waxing pain if it were available?

I'm not a journalist, just a regular Mumsnetter with a business idea. I'd love to hear your opinions.

BTW, the guy's bits looked like a bit like chicken giblets after he'd had his gonads waxed. Can't imagine that many women would fancy it. Then again, my partner is definitely a man of the 70's (which leaves me nicely off the hook!).

Thanks for reading.

Waxing hurts like hell and I would buy a product that reduces pain.

I've only had it done a few times in my life-for legs and armpits.

No way it's going anywhere close to my pubic hair.

Can't think of anything less sexy than a waxed man. Bleugh.

cyb · 16/03/2011 22:32

They think it makes their toggle and two look bigger don't they?

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 22:36

Why anyone would want to wax their bits is beyond me. And I'm of the generation who are supposed to feel obliged to do it in case all the boys faint Hmm

Vagabond · 16/03/2011 23:01

Thanks for your posts.

Bertie - the problem is that young men have been brought up on readily available porn where all the 'actresses' have been completely waxed. I even read an article that expressed the attitudes of some young men as being "disgusted" by the idea of an un-waxed, hairy vagina. Sad state of affairs, I agree.

Please keep your comments coming. Thanks.

wtf why do men do this?

cornsilk678 · 16/03/2011 23:04

I want a wax I can use without those faffy strips. Veet used to do one but I can't find it anymore.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/03/2011 23:05

I have no idea why people would want to wax there. I agree though that people younger than me (early 30s) are very likely to be waxed.

Sod that for a game of soldiers.

OW at the thought of bollocks being waxed. The skin is all loose isn't it - waxing that must be agony.

southeastastra · 16/03/2011 23:06

they need something else to worry about

thenightsky · 16/03/2011 23:07

I tried to use an epilator, but managed about 2 hairs before nearly fainting.

I'm old enough to remember a time when nobody would have anything resembling wax come near their lady garden.

I think we need to encourage this practice to die out actually.

mappandlucia · 16/03/2011 23:09

I'm over 30 and I get it all waxed off.

My dh keeps his, er, area very trim, but would never get a wax.

Agree with GetOrf, have often pondered over stretchy scenario when whipping wax off a scrotum!

southeastastra · 16/03/2011 23:16

must look like the last chicken in the shop

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 23:39

Yes I know why. I just meant I don't understand why people are so influenced by it. It's barmy.

FWIW most men my age haven't complained at my bush except one and he was a wanker (he was also older than me)

southeastastra · 16/03/2011 23:40

it's very odd i think

winnybella · 16/03/2011 23:45

I'm with southeastastra here- i find it very off-putting for men to be ven thinking about waxing their balls et al.

voiceofnoreason · 17/03/2011 09:19

Welllllll a couple of answers

  1. I get everything waxed off and a couple of paracetamol 45 mins before deals with any residual pain. Any immediate ouchiness is minimised by a) getting a pro to do you and b) using hot wax rather than strip.
  1. Male waxing is getting more and more popular. If we women do it for aesthetic reasons - why cant they. I get myself waxed cos i prefer it that way. A properly tended and groomed chap can look v nice in my opinion and if a bloke wants to do it to stay groomed, i say good for him!

Finally - If i have to go through it - why cant they!

GlynisIsFixed · 17/03/2011 09:27

I went out with a semi-professional cyclist a long time ago, he reckoned he had to lose his pubes as they caused chaffing Hmm

It was very off putting, made me feel as if I was shagging a child Blush

But, back onto the subject of the OP, it was a true show of everyones professionalism and expertise then if the guy didn't wince. I'm sure there was enough going on in the audience on his behalf!

Emo76 · 17/03/2011 11:10

I cannot believe you went to a seminar entitled "intimate male waxing" !!!

shopalot · 17/03/2011 15:03

My sister is 21, I am 34 and she says that all her friends male and female wax. She says it is unhygenic not to and thinks it is weird that we don't. This includes the guys by the way.....

wellwisher · 17/03/2011 16:43

I find a couple of painkillers and a double vodka 30-40 minutes before a Brazilian takes the edge off the pain. I also make sure not to go the week before my period as I've read that we have lower pain thresholds then. It's over quickly anyway! So to answer your question, no, I wouldn't pay extra for a product that reduces pain. I can handle it!

I don't know any men who wax but I like it when they have made an effort to trim.

Vagabond · 17/03/2011 18:42

Thanks for all your answers. Wellwisher -glad you can handle the pain! I guess if you keep doing it, the pain must reduce somewhat over time. I find myself giving up over winter and then it seems to hurt all over again come the Spring.

I wonder how many people would pay an extra fiver to have virtually pain-free waxing?

HonestyBox · 17/03/2011 19:15

Last chicken in the shop, arf, arf arf.

Do they stretch out your lips when they do a vulva? I tried my own once but found it impossible with 2 hands - you need 2 to stretch and 1 to do the waxing. Gave myself serious bruising. Why is waxing an area you can't even see so easy for some people? Spill the beans people.

Pain is not the issue for me, I can put up with it.

Vagabond · 17/03/2011 19:28

Well, you might find this interesting about the male scrotum:

The therapist who performed the wax said that the skin on the scrotum is just like the skin on your elbow: you can pull and stretch it and it doesn't hurt at all. As evidenced by his demonstration, it would appear that this is certainly the case!

OP posts:
thenightsky · 17/03/2011 20:41

Do you know something.... I always look at scrotums (scrotii?) and think 'baggy elbow' Grin

So I was correct all along.

naturalbaby · 17/03/2011 21:21

i've been thinking a lot about this - i just had a baby so did a thorough tidy up and home wax before labour. am a sahm so i got a professional wax last baby when i could afford it but got the cheap stuff from the chemist and the results were not pretty as well as blinkin painfull! i've never thought of using anything for the pain, especially when self inflicted! if buying myself for home use i go for the quickest easiest option so if i've got an extra couple of minutes i'll do a cold wax strip but wouldn't get a chance to heat wax up let alone use it.
i quite like the idea of dh getting waxed, can't see it happening though.

RancerDoo · 17/03/2011 21:30

I have a brazilian wax every 4 or 5 weeks. It hurts sometimes, but not every time.
Would I buy a product to reduce the pain? Probably not - the whole thing takes 10 minutes so it's not long to sting. Anyway, I agree with what the chap said about the relationship with the therapist - mine make me roar with laughter, and that definitely reduces the pain (as with labour being tense makes it worse!)

God knows if it is normal for men to wax. I think it is a bit strange frankly. To me hair is kind of manly. The odd trim wouldn't go amiss though...
