Can I really not wear a fascinator?

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 10:04

My Dad is getting married at the end of May and I have my outfit sorted, except for something to wear on my head/in my hair. I am not sure that the dress I am wearing will look ok with a hat. My DD is bridesmaid and I might end up having to walk down the isle with her as she is only 3 and quite shy, so I want to look nice! Plus there will be many many photos, so I don't want to look back and think 'why did I wear that!' I have read on here that fascinators are a bit naff, but have no idea what to wear instead!

My dress is the Rosa dress from LK bennet, but as I bought it late last year I don't think I can link to it. It's black silk with high-ish neck line and has large roses across the hem of the skirt and chest in pink and grey. Sounds awful, but works well on my frame!

I have mid-length hair, between chin and shoulder length and would like something in either black or pink.

Any advice would be really appreciated! Smile

I am wearing a fascinator to SIL's wedding in July and i don't care if anyone thinks its naff or not, I like it and it sets off my outfit. Lots of people will be wearing them and I think if you are going to be involved with the wedding it is appropriate to wear something you wouldn't every day.

SheWhoMustNotBeFlamed · 10/03/2011 10:13

Headband with feathers?

Example here www.abercornandco.com/Shop.aspx?id=277&t=Pheasant%20Feather%20Headband&r=&rb=0&ret=?p=home

but colours not right.

NONONONO to fascinator.

RunforFun · 10/03/2011 10:18

Not sure I'm keen on that SWMNBF, kinda looks like a pheasant crashed into the side of your head on the way to the wedding and you didnt notice.

Fascinators are OK. A bit 1985 in gthe style stakes but for a wedding I think they are OK.

I wouldnt do the pink. Stick with black,

What colour is your hair ?

SheWhoMustNotBeFlamed · 10/03/2011 10:21

Wedding as performance art ...

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 10:22

Thanks for the replies! You see, the opinions are so divided on this!! Grin I have worn fascinators to weddings before and also hats but as this is a really important wedding and one were I might be more involved if I have to walk with DD, then I want to get it right!

My hair is blond-ish. What about some sort of flower? Too twee?

noddy that's gorgeous! I actually gasped when I opened the link.

orangina · 10/03/2011 10:33

No. Buy a hat if absolutely necessary.

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 10:41

That lovely flower clip noddy linked to is only in red or cream. Sad Would cream be too bridal? Will have to scour the internet for one in black or pink (it's a very pale dusty pink on the dress, so hopefully wouldn't be too OTT).

Oh damn, I was going to start the annual i hate/love facinators thread but you beat me to it!

Personally, I like them. It turns an outfit into a wedding outfit.

greygirl · 10/03/2011 10:46

if your dad is getting married, i think you are completly justified in wearing a hat (and maybe even a big one) - it's an important occasion!

but if you have a fascinator that makes you look (and feel) like a supermodel, wear that!

or what about sparkly hairband/hairclips?

it sounds like you have gone to a lot of trouble over the rest of the outfit so don't just 'make do' with your head.

crazybutterflylady · 10/03/2011 10:52

How about something like this this or maybe this would be better because you have blonde hair?

I also really like this too but it's probably an acquired taste and you'd have to be confident that the bride wasn't wearing a birdcage veil or you'd be in bother!

I like this as well and I don't think it is naff at all.

crazybutterflylady · 10/03/2011 10:52

I agree with you queefer!

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 11:07

Queefer Grin sorry! I've been holding off starting a thread, but I need to get the outfit sorted so I can start on DH's outfit!! Grin

Greygirl, I would love to wear an actual hat, I'm just not sure if my dress would look right with one. I'm not sure why I don't think it will look right, may be because it is sleeveless? I like the idea of a sparkly clip, though. I am rubbish when it comes to my hair and even when it was long all I did was straighten it or pull it back. I might have to go and have it styled properly on the morning!

CBL, thanks for all of those links! I'd forgotten about accessorize. I might have to go down and have a try of some and see what suits. The pink looks about the right shade, so it might work quite well. My wrap is also from Monsoon, so the shade might actually match up, too. Grin

Thanks again, everyone! Smile

I found a lovely dusky pink rose in M&S I think a few seasons ago for dd. Also try New Look & Claires. You can occasionally get something non-naffola.

So, haters, linky me some non biddy stylee hats.

MoonGirl1981 · 10/03/2011 12:33

Claire's Accessories have LOADS of flower hair clips, in many colours.

They're nicely made too.

JaneS · 10/03/2011 12:44

noddy that flower is gorgeous!

Btw, Accessorize have a few veiled ones atm, they are nice in a rather 1940s vintage way.

I think you can only get away with a fascinator if it's a bit silly, not if it's all decorous.

SheWhoMustNotBeFlamed · 10/03/2011 13:00

Phase eight have lots

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 13:02

Thanks, everyone. Lots of places to go and have a look, then. Am really sold on this flower idea as I might be able to curl my hair and then just put it on one side. In fact, I am sitting now with my heated rag rollers in to see if my hair will curl and how it looks, then I'll have more of an idea of what will look good! Grin Whatever I wear it needs to withstand running round after a 3 year old and a 1 year old, so the easier to wear the better!

OP posts:
berri · 10/03/2011 13:08

Accessorize have loads of flower clips too...

HalfTermHero · 10/03/2011 13:11

Grazia magazine says NO Grin.

Lazyem · 10/03/2011 13:36

OK, have curled hair successfully and after initial shock I think it might actually look alright. Have found one of DD's flower clips out and stuck it kind of behind my ear which also seems to look OK. Might have found the solution! Not sure if I am brave enough to go out with curls, though! I usually have very straight fine hair, so it is a bit different!

Thanks, Berri, I'll take a look on their website and then go down and have a look! I think I should also take the dress down so that I can match up the colour.

Halftermhero - well, if Grazia say no then it must be true!! Grin
