Gorgeous ladies, can we discuss our 'taches?

Slightly taboo subject, but here goes:

I have a moustache. Nothing dramatic, am blonde so slightly longer blonde hairs on top lip and a few darker ones.

I've been Nairing them. Am too much of a wimp to pluck and won't use bleach since I saw a really bad moustache bleach job randonly one day (this lady looked like a Swedish man - seriously).

I've also seen women who seem to have accepted it and just leave it there. Sadly I'm too vain for such practice.

What does everyone else do?

Shave and pluck - & not just 'tache.

I'm dark. And hairy.

I often wonder what women did centuries ago - there must have been a lot of bearded ladies then!

grumpywitch · 02/03/2011 20:54

If I had one of those mirrors I would be suicidal :D

Bishoplyn · 02/03/2011 20:57

I am a huge fan of laser. But it works best on dark hair - here

CarlaBruni · 02/03/2011 20:58

12x magnifying mirror? Shock

Pancakeflipper · 02/03/2011 21:15

Grin at DunderM. Freddie Mercury - snorts with laughter in that unattractive manner I have.

BlackSwan · 02/03/2011 21:23

Lulie110 - interesting - the Philips one says it's not for the face... though I'm sure people out there are using it on all sorts of places that it's not specifically designed for!

Have you used the device at all?

I'm only game to go up to 10x magnification. I have no interest in seeing my skin at a cellular level!!

DunderMifflin · 02/03/2011 21:38

Noooooo - don't look in magnifying mirrors!

I once made the mistake of catching my reflection in one in a hotel bathroom and my self-esteem hasn't been the same since.

Lulie110 · 02/03/2011 21:48

BlackSwan - yip, have used laser thing on my legs, with great success and am now attacking my arms. After years and years of me pulling my sleeves RIGHT to my wrists to hide my hairy arms, I am very excited about this! Whilst being pale with dark hair is very bad (in hair related terms) in that the hair shows up, it IS luckily the best combo for lasering. You win some, you lose some, hey?!

Click HERE for magnifying mirrors. If you dare...

BlackSwan · 02/03/2011 22:05

Lulie tell me more! How long did it take to get rid of your leg hair? I think that with the Philips one you have to shave the day beforehand. Boots one the same?

Lulie110 · 02/03/2011 22:23

Yes, you shave so that there is stubble (in top layer of the skin) for the laser to KILL. If you had waxed/plucked etc, there may not be enough of the root to be killed. I honestly saw a noticeable reduction after one go, but it did take about 4 or 5 goes for obliteration. Although as hair allegedly has growth cycles, there still may be some new hair growing up that you have to re-laser. It is is super-easy, but does take an age! Also I have to use a white eyeliner pencil to colour over my moles. PLus I also use it to draw tramlines on my leg to show me where I have been, where I need to go.
Something to be done behind a closed door...

melezka · 02/03/2011 22:38

My mother had a tiny (matchbox sized) bakelite box with an equally tiny razor in for her tache.

missnevermind · 02/03/2011 22:58

Melezka. I had one of those from Boots in the eighties. Used mine for my legs though. Was only a slip of a girl then.

FeathersMcGraw · 02/03/2011 23:12

I use Nads wax strips for face...

I'm blonde but have an ash blonde 'tache that magiacally appears if I move my head in a certain way...

I had my eye brows threaded once and the woman suggested that I have my top lip done (oh the shame Blush so I went back later on (didn't have enough cash on me and was still smarting from the double whammy of threaded eyebrows and being told by a stranger that I had a 'tache Grin)

Sooo, went back for the top lip and while she was doing it she casually asked if I wanted my chin doing!!! Nice.

Refused and walked back to my car with a day-glo red 'tache and as much dignity as I could muster.

Got home and checked every millimetre of chin skin to seek out offending hairs - just normal skin tbh. I wonder how far down my body she would have gone if I had agreed to the chin ("how about your chest/arms/fingers/toes etc, madam?")

Pepa · 02/03/2011 23:13

For those ladies that Nair is anyone concerned of the effect of the chemicals on the skin - I've been 'Nairing' for years now but I'm beginning to think that I may be damaging the skin in that area permanently (must admit to the odd tache shaped chemical burn - ouch!)

Threading is the best!

I have been threading my upper lip for several years (by myself) - in the beginning you may get spots, and it will take some time to master, but you do get used to it - it just takes a little time - as does everything else :)

After you have got used to it, you can do it very quickly, and it is less painful than it is the first several times you do it.

I looked for a youtube video, but the closes I came to the way I do it is in the followiung video where a lady is doing her eyebrows

It is very similar (actually, practically the same I think - I have only watched the beginning) to how I do it, except I only use my thumb, and middle finger.

It may hurt your finger initially, as the thread might rub a lot on it, but as you perfect your technique, this does not happen.

I think it is better than waxing, as I have heard that waxing stretches your skin?

Best of all, you can remove (after practice!) even small hairs.

FranSanDisco · 03/03/2011 10:23

My worst fear is to fall into a coma and wake up with a full tache and beard. I shave the tache/pluck odd hairs and pluck the beard (one sided growth only). I'm making myself sound very attractive aren't I? PMSL.

blossoming · 03/03/2011 10:37

I just did mine this morning using Veet wax strips. I got to thinking: this is a product that has completely revolutionised my life. I come from a line of women with bristly 'taches. My mum had hers removed with lasers. I used to use Jolen, but it took too long.
I think it's less taboo now thanks to Blink, the threading salon. I get a much better result now when I wax since the threaders taught me to put my tongue between teeth and upper lip to have a more level area.

PinkOlives · 03/03/2011 10:45

agree with UML threading really is the best, so clean and quick. It really doesnt hurt (that much) if the right thread is used. Although i cant do it myself but lucky to have a salon up the road that does, have been doing it since my teens! eyebrows look great after threading!

amelem · 03/03/2011 10:52

FranSanDisco I share your fear!

Ephiny · 03/03/2011 10:56

I use the Epicare and think it works quite well actually, used to wax with the Veet strips but that irritates/damages my skin.

Wish I could just accept it and leave it alone, as generally I'm not too bothered about my appearance. But it's one thing I do feel very self-conscious about, and it is quite noticeable as I have black hair and pale skin...

clarkykitten · 03/03/2011 11:03

Veet strips here too, with the occasional pluck in between. It's so quick it's worth the moment of pain!

CameronCook · 03/03/2011 11:11

FranSanDisco a friend and I have made a pact that if either of us is in a coma or breaks both arms the other will come in and wax tache and monobrow on a weekly basis

I've had to beg my friend to do that for me too, as I was in hospital for 12 days last year and came home looking like Noel Gallagher crossed with an 80's Kevin Webster.
It was not a good look.
