can anyone help me dress my tomboy dd (10) for a special party?

Dd is 10 and the ultimate tomboy. She lives in tracksuits and trainers and loves climbing tree's and plays football for out local club. She hates hates hates anything girlie especially wearing dresses!

I am having a 30th birthday party in a couple of weeks and the dress code is sort of cocktail. I've told her if she wants to come she has to dress up like everyone else - she asked if she can wear a suit Hmm

I've told her it doesn't have to be a dress BUT it DOES have to be something NICE!!!!!

Can anyone help me find something she might like? She can fit into a size 6 in some things adults things.

Oh and plus - I don't really want to spend a fortune on something I'm pretty sure she'll only wear once because she's being forced into it!

What about smart trousers with a blouse and waistcoat?

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:37

or this kind of thing. Maybe with dark trousers if she is likely to be climbing trees.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:40

this

Think Katherine Hepburn chic.

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 11:44

she might be happy with the trousers, blouse and waistcote option - her version of dressing up is wearing skinny jeans and a shirt - think checked, boys farm shirt!

I can't open the last link Lindt - the bow on the first top would put her right off - oh dear, this is going to be tough isn't it!

I did wonder about a play suit maybe with tights?

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:45

Sometimes you can take the bows off. You would have to look at them.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:48

Oh, I love this. Take off the nasty pink flower.

With plain white top and those navy trousers.

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 11:50

Hmm yeah she might go for a blazer! I can't open the link for the top - don't know if my computer is going nuts or what?!?!?

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:52

top

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 11:55

my links are shit today

That was the second Next one. Maybe shorts with tights? Woudl she go for that?

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 12:02

hmmm I don't know if she would - she'd protest and wouldn't like it but she's been warned that if she wants to come she has to wear somethign suitable. It was a no kids party but she created a fuss about not coming in front of my mum and so now she is coming for a bit.

What about a blazer? Very on trend so she might wear it again like this maybe over a t-shirt with chinos?

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 14:05

ok, I will suggest a blazer to her tonight and see what she thinks. She'd deffo be most comfortable in trousers so maybe chino type things with top and blazer is the way to go. She did look at a leather jacket it new look a few weeks ago too.

Zara have a great range of girls trousers here the first two are great and a coloured pair would look fab.

bambiandthumper · 01/03/2011 17:27

I love jammietart's jumpsuit.

Would she wear something like this or this with tights and ballet pumps?

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 17:28

Good thing with chino type trousers is that she can wear cool Converse hightops with them.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2011 17:29

Sorry but those jumpsuits/playsuits are horrible. Bet she won't like them. I don't think that my DD would like them and she is very girlygirlydressup.

bristolcities · 01/03/2011 18:24

It sounds like your dd has great taste, think she'll look brill with her hightops.

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 21:09

hmmm hightops - really? I spoke to her earlier and she is happy with the idea of a blazer. I think because she thinks it's boy ish enough for her.

Show her these pics and see what she thinks!

sweetheart · 01/03/2011 21:20

ha ha nail on head! She would think those were perfect - I on the other hand think we need to tone down that look - there is no way she's going dressed the same as her little brother!

Gotabookaboutit · 01/03/2011 21:37

My very boyish dd - wore some grey/sliver sparkly shorts with leggings and a white shirt and black waist coat - looked fab and all bits she can wear again
