Those of you with pierced noses...,

...does it matter which side?
Any hints and tips as to where on the nose it should be done or what I should wear in the hole?

Am watching.

Would love to get mine done!

nemofucker · 25/02/2011 21:12

Hmm... whichever side feels right for you [mysterious emoticon]

I have a little crystal stud in mine.

I have a range of different designs and sparkly different coloured studs for special occasions.

I have a tiny nose ring but I don't think it suits me.

I would beg you to go to a reputable piercing shop and not have it done at some cheap tweenager tat shop (naming no names, ahem...)

Honeydragon · 25/02/2011 21:14

I want mine redone but could never get on with those twisty studs. What actually stays in?

TragicallyHip · 25/02/2011 21:14

I don't think it matters which side.
I have one on my left side but don't wear a stud anymore.

Start with a stud until it heals. Just ask the piecer where to have it, they should put a pen mark 1st and show you in the mirror.

baabaapinksheep · 25/02/2011 21:19

I have mine pierced on the right side. It was pierced with a stud, but I changed it to a ring soon after, mainly because I have a dust allergy and the stud used to poke my nostril when I blew my nose. The ring is much more comfortable, never take it out.

tulpe · 25/02/2011 21:50

I had one in the 90's at uni. On the right side. Agree with going to somewhere reputable. I went to a tattoo parlour (that sounds so old fashioned!) and the guys there were scary looking but great :o Gave lots of advice and when I did (unfortunately) have some issues a few weeks later, they sorted it all out and showed me how to make it heal more effectively. It did't hurt - more like a pinch. I wore both the curly backed studs and straight studs, also wore a ring occasionally.

Had my navel done a couple of years later at the same place. Chap says "Tulpe, stay put, you don't look so good" "nooo, I'm fine". Tulpe stands up and promptly keels over :o Recovery aided by 2 Jack Daniels in quick succession in the bar next door!

BronwenC · 25/02/2011 22:09

i have had mine done for about 5 years, defo go with a ring as stud tickles the inside of your nose! dont let anyone pierce it with a gun, should be a needle. you can get these studs that have a teeny ball on the back, so you push it through (hurts like hell getting it in) and then the hole sort of closes over the long bit and its held in by the crystal (or whatever) on the outside, and the tiny ball on the inside, with no pokey long bit in your nose. although if that one gets ripped out it hurts A LOT coz the ball rips through your nose. thats why i have a ring now.

bethelbeth · 25/02/2011 22:26

Don't get it pierced with a ring though because then it will heal at an angle. No reputable place will pierce it with a ring.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 25/02/2011 22:36

Ooh some great suggestions. Thank you!

I always wore a curly-backed stud cut down with pliers and bent into an L shape that I pressed against the side of my nose so it didn't irritate me.

I had/have one peircing on my right side and two in my left.

Jellykat · 25/02/2011 23:50

I'm another right sider.

I can't wear rings,as when the gun went off i jolted, so the hole goes upwards.I wear a normal stud that i shorten and file down..too many nosebleeds caused by the end poking into my septum!

AllThreeWays · 25/02/2011 23:58

Right side for me. And slightly away from the bottom of the ditch in my nose iyswim as the jewel then sits flat against your skin.
Again like everyone else my advice is to go to a professional piercer, get pierced with a needle and made sure the piercing stud is 16g which is a bit thicker than the 18g sparkly studs that you can buy and use later, but it gives you a better healing hole and you can change your jewelery more easily.

Stangirl · 26/02/2011 04:39

Diamond stud on my right side.

Please also pick your professional piercer carefully. If you live anywhere near London I recommend Cold Steel in Camden. You must be pierced with a needle not a gun.

earwicga · 26/02/2011 04:48

I had mine pierced with a ring and it's just fine. Don't have it done with a gun though.

I got mine done on the left. I got it done when my mum was on holiday and I was picking her up from the airport. Hence the left side, so she would see it and be shocked Grin

JemimaMop · 26/02/2011 08:29

I had mine done as a student in the 90s (it has long since healed over). It was done on the right side with a needle. I used to wear quite small studs, never wore a ring.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 26/02/2011 08:35

Mine's on the left, was done with a needle and I wear an 'L' shape stud (proper stud bought at the studio). I agree the curly ones are generally too long, and get annoying. I tried a ring once, but I just looked daft - didn't suit my face at all!

twoboots · 26/02/2011 12:20

I'm a lefty. My mum is a bit insane and insisted that the right both trashy and inauspicious.

theagedparent · 26/02/2011 12:31

Mine is on the right, I had it done back in the 80s and had to bring my own earring to use!

Meggles76 · 26/02/2011 12:31

Like MrsDmitri, had my done in the 90s as a student and always found the 'L' shape studs easiest to put in. The twisty ones used to make my nose sore - eww! It healed over many moons ago

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/02/2011 12:33

Left and used to wear an L shaped stud. It's closed over now :( and I usually can re-open it but can't seem to do it this time. Really want it back.

MissDrake · 26/02/2011 12:34

and how old is too old to have your nose pierced?

FrozenChocolate · 26/02/2011 12:42

Mine is on the left and I have a diamond twisty thing. I had it pierced with a standard earring with no butterfly back put on and put a tiny plaster strip over it at night to stop it falling out. I used to have a tiny ring with three tiny gold dangly bits, but the diamond twisty thing is so classic I have not tried anything else for years. I had it done in 1989 or 1990.

FrozenChocolate · 26/02/2011 12:43

Miss Drake, too old is about 102. Smile

CountessVonKnackerstein · 26/02/2011 17:22

Ooh I really want it done now

peeriebear · 26/02/2011 17:25

I've wanted mine redone for years! i had it done when I was 19 but full time waitressing meant taking it out constantly and it was so sore I let it heal up.
