Crazy wedding ring

rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:12

I was looking for ethical rings to use as my wedding ring, but ever since I saw this one I've been totally obsessed with it. But... it's a turtle. Hmm I'm already a bit, um, unusual in clothing and jewellery choices, but is a turtle wedding ring too crazy? I did find out that turtles are symbols of long-lastingness and stuff so that's good for a marriage, right? But... it's a turtle.

I think this could equally be an AIBU! So, what do you think?

If you like it, get it! It's your wedding ring so you should have something you want to see every day.

FourFortyFour · 22/02/2011 18:14

If you want it, have you. You will get people who think you are daft but they are not really important are they and maybe some of them wish they had been a bit braver and gone with what they liked.

Drizzela · 22/02/2011 18:14

It's not my thing but who gives a crap, anyone who matters will love it as it's your choice. The symbolism is cool too.

CointreauVersial · 22/02/2011 18:18

It's your wedding ring!! Have whatever you jolly well want. You'll be wearing it for the rest of your life, so make it a good one. Just make sure it is long-lasting and robust though (for that reason).

I wore a burgundy velvet dress for my wedding, because I liked it. There are no rules.

FourFortyFour · 22/02/2011 18:19

Have it not have you.

rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:27

Thank you! I think I will be brave and go for it :)

Word of warning. If you plan to wear the ring day in day out you may find it catches on things, or the stones drop out. I had a lovely wedding ring, inlaid with little twists of white gold, and they gradually dropped off over the years Sad.

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 18:45

If you love it you should get it, but maybe not as a wedding ring.

Turquoise is very susceptible to scratching and will discolour with soap and grease. Doesn't age well with intensive wear.

rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:48

olderandwider: Oh no, that's awful! :( I hope these don't! It's why I've been steering clear of rings with marcasite as I've always had bad luck with those coming loose.

PonceyMcPonce, nooo! Lobsters creep me out! And I'm also frightened of swans due to childhood interactions with mean ones. This turtle is friendly-looking, don't you think? :o

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 18:49

How about something like this?

rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:51

Ooh, xpost!

I didn't know that about turquoise, thank you! Is it really very weak? I was told to be careful with my amethyst engagement ring but I treat it awfully and it's still not scratched or otherwise damaged, plus it's very old. If you really think it wouldn't hold up I guess I should pick another ring. :(

OP posts:
rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:52

That's pretty, but I doubt it's £60 somehow! :o

OP posts:
rinabean · 22/02/2011 18:53

My most sensible choice is this. It's very cheap. (I don't mind silver). But... it's not a turtle! :(

OP posts:
HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 18:56

Amathyst is much harder and more durable than Turquoise. Sorry.

DO get it though, just not to wear all teh time. You obviously adore it and it's not going to require a second mortgage.

Don't think it's 60 quid, no, Sorry.

If I were you I'd go vintage for your actual ring.

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 18:58

Actually, I know a chap who makes jewelry you'd probably love. Bet he'd make you a plain silver band with some sort of turtle for day to day.

Will find a link.

barbieisaskinnybitch · 22/02/2011 19:03

Hetty you're lovely.

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 19:04

Here. He's got nothing suitable ATM, but is a lovely chap and I bet he'd be open to commissions and willing to talk about price. Wouldn't be surprised if he was open to barter too.

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 19:11

Oh, now I see you need to create an account to contact him. Can PM you his email (once I've found it) if you want.

rinabean · 22/02/2011 19:56

Thank you so much, Hetty! :)

Some lovely handmade silver rings for under 100 here. Leafy rather than turtle-y. Lady also does commissions.

similar to your daisy ring, but nicer IMHO

Chap I know is very nice and talented but maybe there's someone else better suited to your taste. 'tis always good to shop around.

HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 20:17

meant this daisy one Confused t'other is also nice.

I really like this. Probably too dull. Also does commissions.

rinabean · 22/02/2011 22:00

As if I mind! Thank you for all these ideas! :)

I really really like the leafy ones. To be honest I was looking for leaves, vines and flowers before I stumbled on the turtle :o

OP posts:
HettyAmaretti · 22/02/2011 22:22

lol. No, 'tis etiquette Smile

Hope you find something you love. Will you link when you've chosen? [nosy bint]

rinabean · 22/02/2011 22:33

This!

Well, those. My partner wants a leafy ring (couldn't get him to agree to having a turtle too, much to my chagrin) so if we can afford them in gold (I asked for a quote) we'll get them!

Thank youuuu! :)
