What shoes with maxi dress?

Hi ladies

As previously mentioned in a 'help - my arse needs containing in some magic pants' thread, I'm off to a wedding in a couple of weeks time. It will be quite groovy and not too formal.

I'm wearing a midnight blue jersey maxi dress. But the question is, what shoes? I'm utterly brassic, so ideally something in my wardrobe would fit the bill. This includes:
Brown mary janes, with small heel
Flat bronze ballet pumps
Flat pewter mary janes
Cream wedge sandals.

So, are flats acceptable with maxi dresses? Are sandals acceptable in Feb (with tights!)? Is brown acceptable at a wedding?

Complicating factors include the fact I can't wear high heels, have no money, and have to have the dress taken up, so need to decide soonish re shoes.

Can you link to the dress so we can get a better idea of what will go with it?

KnottyLocks · 15/02/2011 11:17

Don't you dare wear those sandals with tights Grin

I'd go for the bronze or pewter flats, personally.

Fimbo · 15/02/2011 11:18

Need a link to the dress really. Maxi dresses are hard to link up with appropriate shoes. They only really look right with leathery flip flops.

If you really have to go with your wardrobe then I would say the bronze ballet pumps.

lackaDaisy · 15/02/2011 11:20

Out of the shoes you list, I'd go with the bronze ballet pumps. Mary-janes could go with the dress but depends on which dress and which style of shoes. You want to look quirky, not grannyish.

No no and thrice no to sandals with tights. Just no!

Fimbo · 15/02/2011 11:21

You need something like \link{http://www.newlook.com/shop/womens/shoes/smart-wedge-court_210856321\these} although they are still not quite right, have only linked as they are cheap.

Gillybobs · 15/02/2011 11:24

Sell one of your vital organs so you dont waste the dress with the wrong footwear.

metallic gladiator sandals are the ONLY way to go. If you wear tights with sandals I will send the heavy mob round : )

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 11:25

Ha ha! I shan't wear the sandals, then!

Here's the dress, but it's in dark blue. (And full price Angry.)

I'm quite tall, 5'8", so don't necessarily need the height, but was thinking heels might minimise thigh bulge by maximising length, like. Though this could be solved by super-strength Spanx.

I saw some purple wedge shoes in Clarks (of all places), but they were £55 and not sure how much wear I'd get from them... these, but purple-y-er

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO to those Clarks numbers.

Gorgeous dress, looks very clingy, definately needs to be the right shoe or its not going to work.

apple99 · 15/02/2011 11:30

That is a lovely dress. I have only ever worn maxi's with flat gladiators or thong style sandals. However they can look good with wedges, what are your cream wedges like? Are the dressy?

apple99 · 15/02/2011 11:31

And please don'y buy the Clarks shoes to go with that dress, they will ruin it!

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 11:33

These?

I do have problems with my feet, though. Fallen metatarsel arches, you know. I suppose I could sneak my flats in my bag. Another issue - attending with 19-month-old DS, so any outfit to be ruined by ginormobag full of entertainment items.

apple99 - my cream wedges are sandals, and I've been told firmly not to wear them!

OP posts:
KnottyLocks · 15/02/2011 11:37

Gawd those Clarks shoes are scary.

New look ones a much better option. Could you get inserts to support your arches?

And shove your pumps in that ginormous bag!

KnottyLocks · 15/02/2011 11:38

We didn't say no to the sandals...

twas the sandals and tight combo!

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 11:40

The new look ones would mean I wouldn't have to take the dress up! They might also mean I break both my ankles falling down the stairs. Bit of a toss up.

Have you got a link to your own cream wedge sandals? Maybe a bit of fake tan would work?

Tbh I have looked at loads of shoes and nothing is right for that dress.

Gillybobs · 15/02/2011 11:43

Youve misunderstood! yes to SANDALS...NO CLUMPY SHOES...

It was the sandals with tights idea that was horrifying us

Dress is really beautiful. Please dont wear big clumpy shoes with it.

Lovely delicate sandals, preferably flat gladiator style

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 11:56

Sandals are quite a few years old, so don't seem to exist on the interweb any more. I suppose I could go bare-legged. It would solve my 'what tights to wear with spanx' problem! I fear there might be a good deal of standing about on freezing registry office steps, with an arctic February wind blasting me nethers.

The New Look ones are perfect. I found these on Next. The pewter colour would go well with midnight blue, and it's available in all sizes. Code L7001 for free delivery. The peep-toe is a bit of a bugger but you could get footless tights to give you a bit of warmth without having webbed toes on display iyswim?

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 12:12

Lackadaisy - like the pewter, not sure about the cork...

What about these? Or should I just step away from the Clarks website?

Ooh! Only in an 8, though. I'm a 6.

Step away from the Clarks' site

herbaceous · 15/02/2011 12:19

Sorry.

Meant... Aha! Mumsnet-approved gladiators!

Must do some work...
