Short short hair - can you do it if you're tall and a bit podgy?

I'm tall and a size 14. I have a bob. It looks pretty OK, but I want really, really low maintenance hair, not a bob I have to bloody blow-dry and faff with every morning for half an hour Sad

I am no Halle Berry, though. Will I look like a knobber?

Also - what sort of shot styles look good on someone with thick, dead straight hair? That cute, Michelle Williams-esque elfin crop looks like it is only rally suitable for fine, wavy hair. Am I right?

Why don't you have the back cut shorter but keep the layers round your f ace fairly long

How about something like this? a friend of mine who sounds like she has the same stats as you has just had it done and look amazing.

She seems to think its pretty easy to manage as well.

I went from mid back length to Halle Berry short last summer and I love it - haven't looked back! BTW I am not tall but definitely podgy Grin

I do like that Frankie from the Saturdays look, but scared I will look like a tit. I am 34. Too old?

If you are tall then I would say yes.

Im short (just 5 feet tall) and made the mistake of having my hair cut short a few years ago. Being called 'Jimmy Krankie' gets a bit boring after a while........

so yes, if you are tall- no if you are a shortarse.

No i think it would look fab. My friend is complimented all the time.

The only thing is although the hair isn't high maintenance i think the whole look is. Have to make a massive effort with everything else not to look butch.

Go for it i think it was the best decision my friend ever made.

I'm fairly tall (bout 5ft 7) and a chubster (size 16) but I also have a Halle Berry crop and everone says it really suits me much more than when my hair was long.

Could poss be a bit butch lesbian? How broad are your shoulders and do you have a propensity for waistcoats, friendship bracelets and indigo girls music? Of course, if you are butch lesbian it might be perfect for you. Make sure you keep it femme and you should be fine Smile

I am not broad shouldered. I am hour glass with a slight tum, but still have long lean limbs and a waist.

Jenni Murray? Gah! Thanks, cyb. Grin. Like jenni, but she is not my style icon.

I do have the Babyliss Big Hair and love it for doing the front of my hair / lifting roots etc, but it is useless on the back of my hair. The barrel/brush is too wide, iyswim. It just gives me big puffy hair and ages me about 25 years Smile.

My hairdresser is a big fan of short hair (even though she has long hair Hmm and she's told me she thinks it's much more flattering for bigger women. Not sure why. If you look a bit Dannii Minoguish I'm guessing you've got good bone structure? I think that's what it's all about. If you've got good cheekbones, collar bones etc, then short hair looks great. If you've got blobby features (technical term Grin) then it doesn't look so great IMO.

Also depends on your style, how you dress, how much make up/jewellery you wear.

I'm going to say ....Mariska Hartigay. Which will mean nothing to you so..... Go onto tv.com.uk (was googling short hair "do"s and found this on this site, sadly can't get it to link to Mumsnet). Still with me? Ok go to shot 64. It's a really short crop.....try to look beyond the garish face makeup and see the hair. Beautiful. I had this done (already had shortish hair - a short bob and was sick of faffing with it) and had this 2 weeks' ago. Love it. NO HAIRDRYER needed as I have DEAD STRAIGHT, THICK HAIR.

I love mine. Very glam without being "little girl" elfin.

Oh, forgot to say.... be guided by the hairdresser to some extent. I'm lucky as have decent cheek bones and jaw line (though am not tall and willowy!!) so, have to say, it does suit.

I think for a very round face, it could look a bit cabbage patch kid!

You can scan a pic of yourself into the look website ( I think that's the one) and try different styles. It's really very very good.

Am 5foot 10 ish and looked very butch when I had a cropped hair - it looked great when I was dressed very girly and with lots of make up /jewellery etc but when I pulled on a coat and jeans for the school run I looked like the new Dad on the school run

It's a tricky one this but, speaking as one newly short (and loving it) I recommend wholeheartedly.

For a start it's so easy to wash, towel dry and leave the house. By the time I get to school, it's dry and has fallen into place (great cut essential, for this!). Also, I have a "face" again. Instead of peering out from under the "curtains" of my bob.

Love it, love it, love it and wish I'd done it years ago!

think it would look great op, there are lots of variations on a short short look.

at least you have thick hair, i think it helps. much easier to do than if you have fine hair like me. i had mine short for yrs.I have a sort of bob but i soemtimes lift mine off my face, and give it a little bit of height and think blimey i look younger!!

Yet i am short and dumpy, and i can't see it suiting me now.

What about something Amelie-esque? I've got short hair, mine's doing that Michelle Williams thing, but if it's straight you could try a stronger shape.

When I was younger I had very short funky hair- am 6feet tall and slim.
I had a disastrous Toni and Guy cut when I was 8moths pregnant, weighing 16 stone with acute odoema. Awful.

I love short hair but there are times like with a hangover, you need more coverage. Wear lipstick too.

I'm 5'7" and when I was in my early twenties, and very slim I had a short pixie crop, still very feminine I thought but I still got called mate/sir/your son (to my parents) occasionally when someone hadn't seen me properly - I laughed a lot when that happeed on Miranda. I say go for it though, you don't sound podgy at all anyway.
