Can only Brunettes look truly 'chic'?

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 19:59

I've realised of late that most of the stylish, chic ladies I admire when out and about [mad stalker] seem to be brunette.

Now I'm not saying ladies with blonde /red / other hair colours can't also look fabulous... but it never seems to be in that insouciant chic manner that brown hair imparts. Does anyone else know what I mean? Confused

I sadly have blonde white hair and unfortunately look dreadful with dark hair.

Ahem think Grace Kelly or Carolyn Besset Kennedy - both terribly chic in their time.

MavisEnderby · 13/02/2011 20:03

Well am dark and usually look like a bag of spanners

HTH,LOL:o Mavis x

BelligerentGhoul · 13/02/2011 20:04

Well, both Helena Bonham Carter and I are brunette - but not chic.

And Tracey is (so I hear!) blonde and very chic. :)

PlumSykes · 13/02/2011 20:04

Is just 'grass always greener' syndrome! I'm darkest brunette, and spend my days longing to be truly glamorous, like only a blonde woman can. Alas, I would look like the very devil if I went blonde.

FellatioNelson · 13/02/2011 20:05

You are wrong of course, and could you please stop stalking me now.

geordieminx · 13/02/2011 20:07

Tracey is Kerry Katona

I am chic.... Well I have chic hair... The rest kinda let's me down Grin

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:07

Grin fellatio.

YY Tracey - they looked great, but had a certain artifice..? (unsure if that's the word I'm after).

Golly - I think KK is the epitome of chicness Wink

I do know what you mean though - on the sartorialist for example I'm always drawn to the photos of the gorgeous Italian women rather than the blondes.

I think its easier to look tartier if you're blonde and also generally speaking I think olivey skinned brunettes age better.

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:12

I'm thinking of who typifies 'the look':
Juliette Binoche
Audrey Tatou
for example...

Agree re. tartiness factor tracey.

I agree actually as far as "me" is concerned. I was blonde for 10 years or so. I finally switched back to brunette and I feel I look better for it (used the same colourist so not a case of dodgy highlights followed by uber glam brunette tones).

MrsSB if you have a hankering for brunette, surely there will be a shade that may suit? Even if it isn't as dark as you would like?

Also agree with Tracey though that there have been some beautiful and chic blonde ladies through history too.

I wonder if there is something a little less "done" about brunette though? On the surface, appearing lower maintenance, just fell out of bed looking this way?

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:20

I don't think red hair looks 'tarty' as easily as blonde can. There are variations of red hair though, I suppose a brownish red would have same chic quotient as true brown.

Blondes look great a bit more natural. And I think of the words insouciant, gorgeous or stunning etc But when I think of chic I think of natural hair colour and neat. So probably brunette.

I still find am drawn to and love the blonde look.

But there is one look I find fascinating in a that's not me kind of way, Gemma bond girl and even k allsop.

FaffTastic · 13/02/2011 20:23

Dahling, I'm blonde and am the epitomy of chic.

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:23

Yes, Kirsite A definitely typifies the look I have in mind. Sort of effortless, and looks great with scarlet nails, whereas I look like 'try-too-hard-teen' verging on tarty, as tracey said.

Really no I bet you don't. Do you get your hair highlighted?

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:26

Well, here's the tricky part. My hair is white. So I have it lowlighted to platinum blonde. White roots on dark brown = boak. And I am too lazy to go to hairdressers every 2 4 weeks.

BCBG · 13/02/2011 20:28

So what do you do when you start to go grey :(... I am naturally brown haired but have gone shockingly grey around the face but the back of my head is still very dark... So hairdresser has been lifting my roots with a tint and adding a few highlights for about four years now Blush and so I'm fading to blonde.... Whaddya think? I'm Confused

MrsSeanBean · 13/02/2011 20:30

I think the that's the best way to disguise grey BCBG. Sad, if you like the brunette look I agree.

traceybath · 13/02/2011 20:32

Yes I do think blonde hair is easier as you go grey.

Really dark hair can look quite harsh agains older skin I think - especially if quite pale skinned and overly-dyed hair.

Thats why 75% of women over the age of 55 seem to have the same colour hair.

noddyholder · 13/02/2011 20:33

I have red hair and according to dp we are strumpets

tulpe · 13/02/2011 20:34

BCBG I am about 50% grey (actually white). My fringe is almost all white Blush. I have my hair coloured every 2-3 months. I used to have blonde highlights around my face but tbh I found they would fade to a ginger-ish tone within a few weeks and the contrast was even more marked bizarrely than against the brunette sections. I now have an all over colour which naturally fades in sections to give a highlighted look between appointments.

If you look on my profile, you can see that my colour stays very dark inbetween appointments now (these photos were taken 6 weeks after my last appointment) and my hair didn't fade in the sun as it usually does when I have highlights.

tulpe · 13/02/2011 20:35

oh and am v jealous of red hair. Was watching A Single Man last night. I would love Julianne Moore's hair Envy

FellatioNelson · 13/02/2011 20:39

OH my god you've got a viszla!!! Me too, me too. Plus you look like a model in those photos Envy

FellatioNelson · 13/02/2011 20:40

sorry I meant Vizsla - I can spell it honest.
