Your Wardrobe - 'rainbow chaos' or a 'select palette of colours'

BlackBag · 09/02/2011 10:20

Do all you clothes match colourwise or is it just chaos in there?

If something is the 'wrong' colour but you love it do you still buy it?

Begining to think this is why I have a room full of clothes but nothing to wear. I feel a mid-life goth crsis coming on - at least everything matched then. Grin

Almost all of my clothes are either made by my mum (so I've picked the material) or I've dyed things I've bought.

One of my favorite things is a tartanny dress which was beige and brown which I dyed bright purple. It looks fabulous! The dress I'm wearing now was printed with tiny pink and white flowers on a black background. The flowers are now bright red and slightly darker red.

I'd say my wardrobe was 'rainbow' but all of the colours are definately 'strong' and 'bright' colours. No pastels, they don't suit me. Nor do 'autumny' colours like burnt orange, rust, etc.

Have you read 'What You Wear Can Change Your Life' by Trinny and Susannah? Big colour section in there, helped me no end.

My clothes are nearly all purple, turquoise, grey or black. A few navy items but it doesn't really suit me, and a few burnt yellow because I like it and it goes with the purple and turquiose, but I suspect it doesn't really suit me.

Red makes me look awful, ditto brown. Hvae very pinky skin and these colours make me look like a lobster.

tulpe · 09/02/2011 11:25

generally a select palette of colours.

I have come to realise which colours make me look like death (eg. very dark purple, mustard, black, anything peachy/coral) and avoid like the plague - although I do wear black skinny trousers.

So I have a wardrobe full of navy, magenta, brown (either chocolate or caramel), vibrant purples, reds (but have to be careful on the shade - orangey or pinky reds better than blue reds - and warm greens.

If I see something which I fall in love with, but is the "wrong" colour for me, then I will try it on in the store and look at ways I could make it work. For example, I shouldn't wear black BUT if I am tanned I can get away with it if I then team with gold or brightly coloured beads or a coloured scarf. That way, I am still wearing colours which suit closer to my face than the black, iyswim.

Bonsoir · 09/02/2011 11:28

Lots of colour in my wardrobe but only certain shades - I am very fair skinned and don't suit all colours, by a long way.

ReturnOfTheBoomBap · 09/02/2011 11:30

I have a chaotic section of floral / print / patterned etc dresses which I just pull on with a long sleeved black tee and long black leggings underneath and some boots. That's my weekend staple stuff.

I have just bought a black, camel and blush capsule wardrobe for my new job . I can dress smart/casual but am on a budget so have made a concerted effort to pick a few things that will go together. It's a novelty having a little section of stuff that goes together Grin.

I had my colours done - and don't agree with the 'experts' Grin. They said I was winter, but whenever I put on any of the winter colours, I age about 10 years. So I choose my own colours - warm caramel tones suit me, orangey reds, brown, black, aqua and warm, lighter blues/greens. God knows what that means Grin

senua · 09/02/2011 11:33

I had my colours 'done' a long time ago: basically I avoid yellowy colours (certain shades of green or brown are OK, others not). So my select palette of colours all match each other. Well, that's the theory anyway.

StarlightPrincess · 09/02/2011 11:34

I don't wear red clothing, ever, only red accessories. I don't wear orange full stop!I don't 'do' brown, beige or cream as they are just fade into the background boring!

The rest of my wardrobe is a multitude of colours and print!

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 11:37

Lots of bold colour - nothing wishy-washy.

Also lots of black (work clothes).

Lots of blue and black denim.

Main colours are green, purple and red.

Nothing pink though. I have a horror of it.

senua · 09/02/2011 11:37

x-post with BoomBap. The only trouble with having the palette is that it is relatively easy to find one-colour pieces but not so easy for patterned / multi-coloured.

I would much rather that someone wore clashing unsuitable rainbow colours than boring boring black.

HettyAmaretti · 09/02/2011 11:38

Almost everything is black, gray, white or brown. I'd love to wear red but it doesn't suit me.

BlackBag · 09/02/2011 11:49

I look at the magazine spreads/tv make over stuff of capsule wardrobes where everything goes with everything else and wonder whether anyone in real life lives like that.

Buying one bit at a time, over time, means that some bits go with one coat, another coat clashes (not in a good way) with almost everything.

And I find shop lighting sometimes distorts colours .

Meh, I always think the 'having one's colours done' thing is twee and bollocks and reminds me of Bridget Jones' mother.

Wear what you like, when you like. If you find a colour you think doesn't suit you, don't wear it. But don't wear/not wear things just because some "image consultant" told you you should/shouldn't.

Aaaaanyway...

I'm a redhead, but honestly, I just wear whatever I want to wear. Most of my wardrobe is black, white, grey, green, blue and brown. The only colour I refuse to wear is orange, because it's horrible.

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 13:58

TobyLerone - I have a friend who had her colours done.

She carries her chart everywhere. BORING!

She won't buy anything unless it agrees with her chart.

She spends hours denying herself lipstick she likes because it's not her shade.

She even decorates her home according to her chart.

She chose her colour on the basis that it was the right shade for her.

The irony is that she used to wear lovely clothes and always looked good. Now she looks awful. The colours don't suit her at all.

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 13:59

Sorry - that should be -

She chose her car on the basis that it was the right colour for her.

Doh!

TobyLerone · 09/02/2011 14:19

Hahahahaha! I feel vindicated!

onimolap · 09/02/2011 14:24

I've got rainbow chaos. But also a strong backbone (?) of navy blue, and everything can be pulled together with that (not at the same time, I hasten to add).

But nothing yellow.

Wordsonascreen · 09/02/2011 14:27

Looking through I'd say about 50% of my clothes are green.

I am not sure why and I've only just realised.

I never wear red/yellow/orange/beige as it drains me.

Jeans have to be lack or very dark.

I used to be a goth and just wear black so I suppose green/anything is better

[hopefull]

Wordsonascreen · 09/02/2011 14:28

lack being a particularly dark type of black

Ashbury · 09/02/2011 14:38

Yes, I stick to the same colours. Seems to have a lot to do with my frame of mind 'though - the good years have seen me in the colours that suit me best - reds/chocolate/caramel. The not so good years I've ended up in a lot of blue and grey (not my best colours really). Steer clear of black, it's a bit draining now that I older. Lust after a certain type of stylish green (olive?), but just doesn't suit me at all.

SixtyFootDoll · 09/02/2011 14:46

I tend to sstick to greys and black as they suit me, but I can get away with reds and greens too.
I like colour.

I dont look good in purples and browns though so avoid those.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2011 14:53

I have masses of navy. It's definitely the predominant colour in my wardrobe.

And quite a lot of print. I do like a good print.

hugebelly · 09/02/2011 14:58

I have a very organised wardrobe.

Colourwise, the themes are:
Autumn - burnt orange/ olive/ tweed
Winter - plum, charcoal
Spring - navy, green
Summer - white

not strictly adhered to, but you get the gist. I wear plenty of tailored jackets/ blazer, so I can get away most colours underneath.

Just seen these from The White Company - ooh, lovely to put away my jumpers in the summer months.

Verso · 09/02/2011 15:00

Used (until recently) to be a hotchpotch of different colours, styles, impulse buys and "whatever fitted". Since I lost weight I've treated myself to a whole new gorgeous, co-ordinated and lovely wardrobe, full of things that are actually "me". It's fab! (Not sure how long it will stay like that but it's loooooovely and much easier getting dressed in the morning! Smile)

Verso · 09/02/2011 15:02

P.S. (shh, but I break away from my "theme" in my undies. They are now all the colours of the rainbow!! Matching sets and everything! Lacy bits! Silk! Used to all be black/grey and now even Gok would approve! Grin)
