If you've ever had your colours done

Did it change your life, did you suddenly look 110% better in your clothes ?
Do you like the colours they said you should wear ?
Am considering asking for this for Mothers Day, just wondered about it's usefulness.
Thanks

I had it done 4y ago and it was fabulous - fortunately I like most of the colours which suit me, some of which I already wore. Helpfully the lady doing said that no pastels suit me at all and she is right. Also she steered me to creams rather than whites and various shades of colours rather than "no blue" etc etc

I found it very useful and would make a great gift!

fridascruffs · 05/02/2011 20:56

I had mine done about 15 years ago, and it might not have made me a Much Happier Person but it did change the way I shop for clothes- i only ever buy my colours now, I skim the rack for colour before i look at style etc. I gave up black for a long time but I do use it a bit now, but only ever with a coloured necklace or a scarf near my face. It is best to do it with someone else, as I did, becaus i foundthat you can see much better on another person the way colours make them look better or worse than you can on yourself. You can see it on yourself but only with the more dramatcially bad colours I found- eg yellow/ orange made my face look jaundiced, i would NEVER wear them any more.

ooooooohhhhh this sounds good !!?!

Where do you get that done and how much ?

I had a Colour me beautiful analysis last year and it has helped me have more focus to my shopping trips. So I guess it's saved me money. I bought the books years ago and had some idea of what I felt suited me, but also felt confused because I was trying to analyse myself.

So, yes a good investment. You should have a representative close to you and can check this on the CMB website. My nearest one happened to be one of the authors of their latest book, so gave me more confidence in the cost side of it. You can buy different packages and I bought the straight forward colour analysis which was around a hundred quid for the hour.

mum295 · 05/02/2011 21:18

Yes, had mine done by Colour Me Beautiful two years ago as a Christmas present.

It has been soooo useful, making shopping much easier as there are whole racks of clothes I can avoid (no black for me!) and sometimes whole shops.

You get a big selection of colours, but I was gratified to find out that some of my favourites were the ones that worked best on me, and it has encouraged me to be braver. I didn't have to chuck out that much of my wardrobe.

My session cost about £120 or so, which included some free make up.

The timing of it was good for me as I was returning to work from maternity leave and totally lacking confidence. This gave me my confidence back!

I had mine done years ago by Colour Me Beautiful. I found it useful. have the swatch wallet but don't tend to take it out.

do try to stick to recommended colours.

ellangirl · 05/02/2011 21:27

Am going to house of colour next sat as the lady who does is also a colleague of mine so it should be a laugh! Think she's done most of the workplace's colours now :)
Wouldn't normally go as I guess I'm considerably younger than their average client! Will happily let you know how it goes it you like!

mamatomany · 05/02/2011 22:44

That would be great Ellangirl, thank you
Am just worried if she says I am an Autumn which I fear I might be, I don't like any Autumn colours so what then, look crap but know you are ruining your own chances and spending a fortune in the process.
I over think these things I suspect Wink

I haven't had my colours done, but I believe that if you were autumn it would not mean that you have to wear oranges and browns etc, it would just mean that you would suit certain shades of the other colours. For example the differences between crimson, raspberry, magenta and rust in the reds.

Well, I thought autumn colours suited me (I love autumn colours) but have been told they don't, e which is a shame. That was the one thing I'd seemingly been getting wrong.

8oreighty · 07/02/2011 17:51

keep thinking that it did in a way change my life as I now always wear clothes that suit me...is worth the money definitely.

MrsFogi · 07/02/2011 17:54

I had mine done by CMB and thought it was a waste of time and money.

purpleturtle · 07/02/2011 18:04

cat64 - some of us just don't have the eye for colour! I feel much more confident in what I wear now, and I know it's saved me money over the years.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 07/02/2011 18:05

I think it's really worthwhile and ultimately helps you to look good and save money by not buying things that don't 'work' IYSWIM.

I'd recommend going to a good HOC consultant.

As far as I can see there are a variety of different people doing "colours" and you need a thorough detailed session for them to get it totally right.

I did have a feel for what worked for me prior to having mine done but learnt a lot more by having the full session - I now know what suits and don't wear black or grey any more.

FluffyMummy123 · 07/02/2011 18:25

its naff but OSSOM

DirtyMartini · 07/02/2011 18:29

OSSOM?

schoolsecretary · 07/02/2011 19:22

Had mine done about 20 years ago by cmb, absolutely brilliant, shopping so much easier look only for colours that suit. I once walked into small Dotty P's passed bored looking man, wandered up and down the sale rail and walked out again, all, colours totally wrong for me lots of autumn shades, as I did I heard him saying to his wife," why can't you shop like her, she was in and out in 5 minutes, you've been in there 20 minutes and bought nothing.... "

We're just different ways round then, cat64! I can do the decorating thing, where you need advice. I don't find the clothing thing comes naturally, and that's where I'm happy to take advice! Grin

jamaisjedors · 07/02/2011 20:42

I agree that it wasn't a massive shock which colours suited me, but more of a reassurance.

Also, I was quite unsure of myself and now am more confident, and as others said, can discount clothes straight away OR make them work for me by wearing my best colours (cool and deep) near my face .

snail1973 · 07/02/2011 21:07

Had my colours done last year by excellent house of colour lady. Have always been rubbish at knowing what suits me (and what colour to decorate) but am now much more confident. Definately worth the money. Have also had style advice from same person which was great too.

blimey · 07/02/2011 22:37

I did a house of colour session on saturday and I really recommend it if you are not confident about what colours will suit you. I dreaded the prospect of finding out I was autumn, but when I duly discovered I was, I was relieved to discover there are a huge range of colours in each season. I had the best shopping trip ever afterwards choosing colours I would never previously have looked at thinking they might not suit me. I was shocked to see how these colours really do work and I have already had compliments about looking really well etc (although part of this might be down to the encouragement to wear a bit of make up)
I am now looking at the world with new eyes and seeing where people suit the colours they wear and where they don't. I will sadly have to change a lot about what I have been wearing but I have never felt confident about clothes before and now I feel like I have a bit of a clue. I plan to do the follow on image and style class.
It was also a bit of girly fun to be fair!
I imagine it depends a lot on your consultant - mine was fun!

polyhymnia · 07/02/2011 23:27

One of the other times this subject came up a few months ago, someone recommened either a CMB or House of Colour woman in High St Ken. area - can anyone tell me which it was, as fancy trying this. Think I know after many years, but always open to good advice.

BlackBag · 08/02/2011 12:18

Had mine done years ago, when I 'rebel' and buy something in beautiful but in the 'wrong' colour it really does n't suit me Sad. If I paid attention to it, I would look better.
