Crest whitening strips & toothpaste.

Ordinary Jif peanut butter has trans fats/ partially hydrogenated oils in it. 'Natural' PB is much better for you and a stronger peanutty flavour imo.

Jolly Ranchers are a boiled sweet with nice flavours (but no blackcurrant) -- Jelly Belly jelly beans are delicious and come in an astonishing variety of flavours. I think you can get them in Target too. But forget Hershey 'chocolate'.

The local Sunday newspapers usually have loads of ads in them. It's well worth spending $2 or so on the major local paper (not USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times unless you're in DC or New York) if you're going to be there on a Saturday evening/ Sunday.

mathanxiety · 05/02/2011 18:03

Oh and big cans of coffee from any grocery store are usually a very good deal.

kittya · 05/02/2011 20:11

Since I got back I haven't bought any new clothes. I have lived in my Levis Curves and tops bought from Urban Outfitters also cardis/jumpers from Bannana Republic. The latter is cheaper if you stick to the sale stock. I am very envious!

Lulie110 · 05/02/2011 20:16

RE melatonin, I usually take it about an hour before my new/local bedtime. So if you buy in US, I'd take it the day of my return flight. But if I was on a very short work trip I might take it the every night. And i think the rule of thumb is you take it for (half the amount of timezones travelled, plus one).
NB will add that it is not scientifically proven, but seems to work for me! Other thing that helps is to get as much natural daylight in the day as you can - this suppresses the sleepiness coming in at the 'wrong' time, IYKWIM.

long-time lurker here. I live in New York and find it amusing that so many people stock up on painkillers here. I do the same in reverse whenever I am back in the UK! I can't really add anything to what's already been said, just reiterate the recommendations for sephora, carmex, burt's bees, bare escentuals, crest whitestrips, Target (definately NOT affiliated to the Australian Target) At the moment Target is doing Mulberry bags and you can sometimes get lucky with any Liberty of London items they may still have lurking in the sale racks, although I think I may have bought most of it! Foodwise, I am always asked to bring back lucky charms, although I can't think why, they are disgusting, even my very naughty dog and sugar-addled children won't go near them! Reeses, butterfingers and babe ruths all the way! And you must eat at Chipotle, I hear it is in London now, it is the best fast food ever, about $8 for the biggest burrito in the world!

kittya · 06/02/2011 15:56

where abouts in New York can I find a Target? Im over in November, staying in Greenwich. Ive never had the joy of going to a Target, Im almost fantasising about it Smile

coastgirl · 06/02/2011 16:08

Adidas/Nike/Reebok are all cheaper, especially if you can find an outlet store - DH and I have enough exercise gear for years and it was all less than half price. Workout tops for $6 in Reebok! DH likes Old Navy jeans as well; the cheap ones are like any cheap jeans but when we were there in summer they were doing 'premium' jeans for $19.99 which were really nice cuts and he wears them all the time now.

I loved Abercrombie as I think the clothes are really well-made and they use lovely cotton in their t-shirts - American Eagle are similar but even cheaper. Sephora do Bare Minerals kits much cheaper than here too.

secondcity · 06/02/2011 16:42

As someone mentioned previously, Target tends to be in more suburban areas. There is one on E 117th st. the ones in Brooklyn are a bit too far out, but Riverdale is good. (Bronx).
sorry that my previous post descended into a food post. I know this is style and beauty.Smile

FluffyMummy123 · 06/02/2011 16:42

You know i was REALLY disappointed when i went.
I found the shopping utterly bewlidering
t he sale tax
the SIZE of the places
just too too much
and i can shop big time

kittya · 06/02/2011 17:11

the sale tax is annoying and its easy to forget!!

Where did you go shopping? Im sure it must be a different experience depending on where you go.

When I go to New York this time I would like to find a shopping area thats away from the big avenues and that area can be daunting, Im sure they must be malls scattered around though.

joydivisionovengloves · 06/02/2011 18:25

Go to the Prime outlets on International drive for lots of bargains, They have a Victoria's Secret outlet with amazing bargains.

Another vote for Tylenol.

Nike trainers

Seven For All Mankind Jeans

coastgirl · 06/02/2011 18:31

I did not enjoy shopping in NYC - I found the department stores very expensive and crowded. However, shopping in Vegas was great, with outlets an easy cab ride away and massive shopping centres in the casinos (the hilariously named Shoppes at Caesar's Palace are great!) and everything's huge and open until really late so not too packed.

FluffyMummy123 · 06/02/2011 18:36

trainer shops just VAST and full of a lot of cack
got some for £30 ( nike) when i got home

MappandLucia · 06/02/2011 18:41

We're going to sw florida over Easter, we go every year. I stick to Nike sports gear, Converse (2 pairs for $55 last year), Advil - always!, Kitchenaid gismos for dh, such as can-opener, garlic press, Gap clothes and anything from Sephora.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2011 21:49
