dont forget the tax at the till as that can bump the price up. Go to a Levis store and get measured for their new Curve jeans, I bought two pairs and wished Id got four.

Oh, buy lifesavers to suck on!

Where are you going?

livvyliv · 04/02/2011 18:27

Florida. Can't wait. Not sure what the shops are like though.

I havent been but, I think they are pretty spread out. You will have to ask on here about Malls. Dont forget to find that supermarket Target that everyone raves about. Ive only ever been on city visits and have never found one!! they are supposed to be everywhere as well.

mathanxiety · 04/02/2011 18:59

Targets are mostly suburban but you will find the occasional one in really big cities. Here's a listing of Florida Targets. Walmart is usually in the burbs too.

I agree with Kittya about the duty free leaving the US - not great.

(I'm allergic to aspirin and so are two of the DCs, hence the Tylenol/acetaminophen. I look for jars that have an expiry date a long time from the day of purchase)

kittya · 04/02/2011 20:09

The teeth whitening strips are very good but, not cheap though! I saw them for about $45. I'm not sure how much they are on eBay. Yes, avoid duty free they aren't like ours.

Lulie110 · 04/02/2011 20:20

Oh, the Duty Free stores in US are horrid, true. Very small, not much range. But they WILL have Clinique, that you can rely on and it will be cheapest. So if you were planning to stock up on your favourite mascara or whatever, buy in DF. But if you're looking to play in a lovely beauty department and buy less common ranges, buy domestic, but remember to add on sales tax in domestic.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 04/02/2011 20:36

Think there is a really good outlet mall/s in Florida (you'll have to google or someone on here might know) and you'll get good bargains. I lived in Ralph Lauren XL t-shirts when I was pregnant - a steal as they were $9.99 each!

MorrisZapp · 04/02/2011 22:44

So jealous! If I was still childfree I'd join you.

I love American Eagle, Bath and Body Works, all department stores, all drug stores, Target (they call it Tar-jay, for a laugh), all sweet stands - I stock up on Jolly Ranchers.

Tylenol PM is the only otc sleep tablet that has ever worked for me - buy it in tubs.

I'm obsessed with US shopping. Fab, fab, fab. It's a service culture, the customer is always right. Go to any mall or shopping street, you can't go wrong. You can even get a shopping rush in a petrol station :)

mum295 · 05/02/2011 08:18

We also bring back the big canisters of Advil...keep us going for ages!

And huge boxes of Band Aids are useful too, and much cheaper than here.

Buda · 05/02/2011 08:29

Presumably if you are going to Florida you will be in Orlando?

There are a few Targets. The first day we were there 2 years ago it was raining so we went to Target to stock up on drinks and snacks for the room etc. Ended up spending 3 hours and over 900 dollars there!!!! Clothes for me, clothes for DS, clothes for DH, presents to take home, vitamins, Aveeno skincare stuff, and I bought bedding. Their bedding is lovely.

You will also be near the FLorida Mall which is a huge big shopping mall with lots of stores and a Maceys etc.

The Duty Free in Orlando airport is very disappointing so I would be wary of waiting till there to buy stuff you definitely want.

We are going in July and I can't wait!

livvyliv · 05/02/2011 08:45

I've been to Target in Australia and have spent many happy hours in there.
Yes it's Orlando we're going to.

Someone has mentioned joe's jeans.Never heard of them myself though.

Thanks again for the info.

Like the idea of sleeping tabs.

FellatioNelson · 05/02/2011 10:02

Oh for me it's the drugs every time. I can spend hours browsing in a US drugstore - fascinating places.

sparklyjewlz · 05/02/2011 10:54

What is melatonin for?
[blushing at ignorance]

FellatioNelson · 05/02/2011 11:08

I think it helps you over jet lag, and SAD? (winter blues) not quite sure though?

TrailMix · 05/02/2011 11:26

Depends where in US you're going, but...

If you like Boots anti-aging & make-up, look for it in US, as I've often found it cheaper (depends on exchange rate though!). Burts Bees stuff is a great bargain in US.

Nordstrom's Rack for fab, cheap shoes. (Nordstroms itself is v expensive).

If you're sporty, the stuff in the US is really good and often quite cheap: camping equipment, running shoes, sports clothes. Sports Authority/Big 5/ etc are cheaper, REI expensive but very high quality.

Jeans are cheap. There's often 40% off or some great deal going on DKNY, CK, Levis - check out city's main newspaper for a guide to sales! And for knock-about jeans, Lee are so cheap it brings tears to the eyes.

Have fun!

TrailMix · 05/02/2011 11:27

Sorry, just saw it's Orlando. Yeah, go to Target.

mummydarlingsausage · 05/02/2011 13:56

if you like peanut butter try JIF creamy - it is the best.

Lulie110 · 05/02/2011 14:41

Exactly, Fellatio, it's a naturally-ocurring hormone that is said to reset the body clock, hence can help with jet-lag - which is what I and lots of other frequent fliers take it for. It is also allegedly good for shift workers or insomniacs, plus is meant to help with SAD.
Can you tell am not a scientist!!!

Lulie110 · 05/02/2011 14:44

Oh, and the mention of sweet and peanut better reminded me of... peanut butter M&Ms.

Actually, I could just play in Target or Duane Reade for hours, buying medications, sweets and makeup.
