I was just wondering where other people save their money in the realm of all things 'Style & Beauty' and where do you splash the cash?

Mine are:

Spend on -

Hair products
Hairdresser
Handbags (and then wear them until they fall apart)
Scarves and gloves
Spectacles
Everyday (casual) shoes
Trainers for running
Make-up
Moisturiser
Perfume

Save on -

Clothes (eBay and charity shops)
Coats (eBay)
Smart/dressy shoes and boots (eBay)
Gym clothes
Cleansers
Undies and socks

Obviously this is relative to your own budget.

hmmm

i buy quality clothes but usually from charity shops/ebay so a bit contrdictory...

exercise clothes are cheap and cheerful, i'm only going to sweat in them after all BUT i will buy quality trainers

IF THEY WORK then i splurge on cosmetics and facestuff but tend to economise on shampoo and hairstuff Confused

unfortunately the older i get the more i am realising that, with a few exceptions, you tend to get what you pay for...hence my taste is becoming more expensive...

Jewelsandgems · 03/02/2011 17:14

spend

tinted moisterisor - (its gotta be bobbi brown for me)
mascara - (dont find the cheap ones very good)
eyeliner (always mac)
blusher (mac...)
purse/wallet (dunno why really - just like expensive ones!)

save
body lotion (soap £ glory is good stuff and good price!)
going out dresses (with only a few wears before theyve been seen by everyone too many times, no point spending £££ when you can pop to topshop or H&M)
eyebrow pencil (get sharpened every day, buy a good cheap one from boots and no worries)
nails (cut them short and square, varnish them myself in this seasons colours like barryM - practice makes perfect - no more paying for mani's)

mum295 · 03/02/2011 17:14

Thanks for all the replies so far! Nice to see I'm not the only one running around in cheap knickers!

MayorNaze, my taste is also getting more expensive. I used to travel to the States with work and bought lots of my stuff there or in duty free, but since being made redundant and becoming a SAHM by default, I've had to switch brands and make compromises.

I also buy quality clothes from charity shops/eBay. Don't see the sense in buying something by Primark that you could buy new for a few quid more! Luckily we live in a good area so there are rich pickings. Although now am pg again, doesn't seem to be much in the way of maternity clothes.

Spend on:

Coats - they last years
Spectacles - vv shortsighted
Jeans
Shoes
Work-suits
Hair products - to the level of John Frieda rather than Tesco's own, not serious money.

Save on:
Most other stuff! I get a lot from charity shops, underwear from the supermarket except one or two nice sets, make-up's more Boots 17 than No7, but I have aspirations...

biryani · 04/02/2011 18:04

Spend: perfume, knitwear, boots.

Save: leggings etc, jeans, accessories.

Do own nails; use cheap hairdresser fairly often.

Spend on-
DH work clothes
Bras (Spend more on bras than the rest of my wardrobe combined, including shoes and handbags!)
Kid's shoes
DH shoes (flat feet)
Soaps (gentle stuff for eczema-prone kids and DH, super lush smelly ones for me)
Hair jewelry (pins, barrettes, etc, before I cut it to shoulder length)
Other jewelry, but rarely buy.

Save on-
All other clothes including coats (charity shops, mainly)
My shoes and handbags (ebay)
Make-up (rarely wear, usually buy from Boots)
Moisturizer (Aldi's)
Hair stuff
Specs (buy online)

vesela · 04/02/2011 18:25

Spend on:

dresses (for everyday wear)
knitwear (only wool)
boots
sometimes moisturiser and makeup, sometimes not
deodorant (expensive ones seem to work better!)

Save on:

long-sleeve T-shirts for layering
leggings
hair (I cut it myself - too impatient to go to hairdresser, and we have a good hairdresser next door!)
bags (I've never really liked expensive bags - I usually have canvas ones).

MaryMungo · 04/02/2011 18:33

Have also been known to spend more on socks than shoes in a year. Am addicted to wool socks and thick tights

vesela · 04/02/2011 18:44

yes, I've splurged on thick tights too - it was worth it, though.

Bonsoir · 04/02/2011 18:47

I splurge big time on clothes, but don't buy a lot - I'd rather have a few really nice things, wear them to death, and then start again the following season.

I spend a huge amount every 2 months on a great haircut, but that's it for my hair, apart from shampoo and conditioner (supermarket).

And I don't spend a lot on skincare, since I buy French pharmacy brands at a discount.

I never spend any money at all on exercise - I just run around after my family all week long!

wildfig · 04/02/2011 18:50

spend on
hair cut/colour
glasses
moisturiser (tho' only No7)
jeans
Spanx
boots
one thing from Vivienne Westwood each season

save on
shampoo - isn't Elvive like cheap kerastase?
body lotion
gym kit
mani/pedis - do my own
bags
jewellery
fake tans (have embraced the Twilight look)

If I can make the imaginary amount I would have been spending on tanning, nails, vajazzling, Botox, etc the same as the amount I do spend on the rest, it feels like I'm actually saving money. So for imaginary accountancy purposes, I am also 'deciding not to splash out on' liposuction, cheek implants and breast enlargement.
