Am early 40s and have no desire to be mutton dressed as lamb...still looking for the trad white number, but not sleeveless and / or backless - anyone seen anything good? Smile

hmmm..I got married aged 38 and don't hink i looked like mutton...in my sleeveless number
do you look your age?? what is your dress sense like normally?

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 10:19

Sleeveless is not a good look for me - I think that some people could look good in this style at 60, Dropdeadfred, and I'm sure that you looked splendid, but it never even suited me at 20 when I had a very good figure.

Tbh, I don't even think that it suits half of the models in the magazines who model the dresses.

Uusally I don't do frills or furbelows, and like elegant, plain stuff in simple materials (not lace, for example.)

Go vintage. They're often a lot more 'covered-up', but also unique.

KristinaM · 31/01/2011 10:36

When i got married i didnt want strapless as i was very skinny then and it didn't suit me. i found that almost all off the peg wedding dresses are strapless, so i looked at evening wear, found a style i liked and had it made for me.

It was ivory crepe, very plain, cut on the bias with a fishtail skirt. Beading around the neck, long sleeves with buttons ( winter wedding and to hide my scrawny arms)

it was freezing and i wish i had gone for a fur cape lined with velvet or satin as well

tiny flower girl had red fur coat trimmed with fur and white fur muff and she was toasty

this?

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 10:39

this?

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 10:41

beautiful

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 10:42

this Coast one?

KristinaM · 31/01/2011 10:44

for me it was important to wear something that suited me and i felt comfortable in, rather than strapless, white, lacy, sparkly and with a huge skirt, which was the compulsory standard wedding dress when I got married

i think there is a larger variety of styles now on the market. Agree that vintage or vintage styles are a good way to go

remember that if your dress is very plain it needs to be very good quality fabric, drape beautifully and be properly cut and fitted

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 10:46

when are you actually getting married - what shape are you?

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 10:49

Thanks Kristina and KikiJane; will investigate both vintage and evening dress options.

I like the 2nd one a lot, vintageteacups;I was planning an extravagant made to measure number but maybe I could save a pile of cash here...

Do any of these vintage dresses appeal?

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 10:54

Will prob be a summer wedding (no date set at the mo) and I am average height and an hourglass figure (albeit with more sand in the glass than I'd like), currently size 14 and am aiming to be a size 12 by time of wedding.

Can't do drapey, floppy stuff; needs to be fitted. Maxi dresses make me look like the proverbial potato sack; not structured enough.

How about a 50s'-style Vivien of Holloway dress? Fitted, pretty, lovely for an hourglass figure.

OmicronPersei8 · 31/01/2011 11:03

You also get a matching bolero if you want to cover your arms.

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 11:12

this coat dress?

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 11:13

hmm, sadly I can't do those swingy fifties skirts, and top is a little fussy for me, although would be fine without the rosette.

Was thinking full length (I don't have great calves or ankles)

OP posts:
vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 11:14

here?

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 11:15

long and wouldn't be strapless with bolero

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 11:16

do you defo want bridal colour or not fussed?

OmicronPersei8 · 31/01/2011 11:16

Ok, a little clearer now. Fitted, full length, nothing too drapey, fussy or lacey. Not sleeveless or backless.

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 11:17

stunning!

Am i getting close?????

UrsulaBuffay · 31/01/2011 11:18

Monsoon bridal range is usually very lovely and not too over the top.

boohoohoo · 31/01/2011 11:24

I had a Monsoon WD for my wedding in October, I`m forty. It was beautiful and felt gorgeous to wear!
