Primer recommendations?

greentig3r · 28/01/2011 15:48

Saw L'Oréal Studio Secrets advertised on TV and decided I need a primer. Has anyone tried it?

Is Smashbox worth the money- that's the only one I've seen mentioned in MN forums. Any recommendations for something kind of natural would be nice, as these things all seem to have lots of silicone-based ingredients.

I get dry skin, so not a big fan of powdery stuff. I'd mostly wear it under Clinique Superbalanced Makeup to try and hide enlarged pores and fine lines.

Have a look at the reviews on MakeupAlley. They're utterly brilliant, and independent. I don't use one, but probably should!

AimingForSerenity · 28/01/2011 15:54

Don't think they're natural but I love the Clarins one in a little red pot (Lisse Eclat?)

I have dry skin too and this one goes on well, gives a lovely smooth feel and makes my foundation stay on and not go powdery.

I also love the Uran Decay eye and lip ones

moragbellingham · 28/01/2011 15:55

I like it, and when I can be bothered it makes a difference especially by filling in pores!

LadySanders · 28/01/2011 15:56

avon do one called something like magix i think, it's v good and v cheap!

MissBeehiving · 28/01/2011 16:09

Magix is great and well reviewed on MakeUp Alley.

HeroShrew · 28/01/2011 16:20

I do like the clinique pore perfect lotion to fill in the craters. Am skint now and can't buy any more so am considering polyfilla.

mollymole · 28/01/2011 16:21

try 'gosh' from superdrug - not too expensive

bigTillyMint · 28/01/2011 16:52

Yes, the Avon one is good and pretty cheap!

FaffTastic · 28/01/2011 16:57

I didn't like the smashbox one at all. Never tried the L'Oreal one. Loooove Chanel Base Perfection and Benefit 'That Gal' is good too.

Never tried it but the Laura Mercer one also gets good reviews

wendihouse22 · 28/01/2011 17:11

Second HeroShrew's Clinique Pore Perfect but....not for these cashstrapped times (well, not for me) at the moment!

greentig3r · 28/01/2011 19:03

Ooh, lots to look into. Thanks for all the ideas. Anyone try shiseido?

Have just bought Dr Bradt Pores-No-More Pore Refiner. Much better than Smashbox (but about £10 more expensive), feels like Cashmere on the skin.

cookingfat · 29/01/2011 16:10

I'm a fan of the Smashbox primer. Lasts ages, so that makes it seem a little cheaper! And it's more natural than many others, too.

Truffkin · 29/01/2011 16:15

I also have (very) dry skin and use a primer, albeit only when I'm doing 'proper' make up when I go out. I like Skin Adjuster from Colour me Beautiful, which I bought after having a colour consultation. The appointment was a gift, not the most useful in terms of colours but the makeover was fun Grin

I've also tried Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, which is creamy so good for dry skin. I find this is good for filling in large pores and covering the feathery lines I am developing near my eyes!

greentig3r · 29/01/2011 20:03

Cool, thanks. Tempted to start with Avon and see how that goes.

While I liked the texture of the Magix primer, the smell is REALLY odd and puts me off so I won't get that again.

I have used Bare Essentuals primer which is great.

Also while in Boots today noticed that Maybelline have a new one out which I tested and it feels lovely, so that might be my next purchase.

I am currently using Olay serum and moisturiser in place of a primer and it's working well.

CMOTdibbler · 29/01/2011 20:09

Am pretty impressed with the L'oreal one - a verty little goes a long way

greentig3r · 30/01/2011 13:03

Lots of mentions for L'Oréal on best buys thread- may get that today- off to John Lewis to find this Ojon volumiser someone recommended and some body wash for DD that doesn't burn like Johnsons. And maybe some Blowfish boots, though I resent paying proper money for boots that aren't real leather.

I have been using hte L'Oreal one. Now it could be a coincidence but my acne has cleared up amazingly since using it. I was on the point of going to GP (which I have to every so often as the acne takes hold) but suddenly it started to get better.

I deffo like it but it is the first one I have tried.

Panzee · 30/01/2011 20:50

I love the Clarins one in the little red pot. It's like polyfilla! It smooths my lines, calms my red cheeks, fills my pores and smooths my scabby skin. Marvellous. :)

brimfull · 30/01/2011 20:59

have tried the l'oreal one and the clarins one and both very similar and very good

LadyBiscuit · 30/01/2011 21:23

I love the L'Oreal one, particularly since I went out one evening to meet a friend and in the horrible lights on the tube platform she said 'your skin looks amazing! what have you done?'

Worth every penny :)

verytellytubby · 30/01/2011 21:58

I'm using an Avon one I was conned persuaded to buy. It's lovely.

Celery · 30/01/2011 22:08

If anyone has oily skin ( not OP, but anyone else reading ) the MAC spf 50 primer is excellent. It's a very different formulation to the normal MAC one, that didn't work for me at all. Basically, all foundations slide off my face, but the MAC spf 50 acts like a pvc glue ( in a good way! ) and keeps foundation on, and non shiney, all day. As well as smoothing all the imperfections out etc.

Panzee · 31/01/2011 06:52

I've checked my Clarins little red pot. It's called Instant Smooth.
