what are the down sides or things to worry about when deciding to chop off all your hair?

i've had short hair before but that was 10+ years ago so can't remember what it was like to live with - oh and that was pre children too!

i'm thinking of an emma watson or a carey mulligan

Yes - do it!

Cut my hair from half way down my back for the last 25 years to a choppy/messy/pixie style.

Love it.

DP hates it so it stays.

prettyfly1 · 26/01/2011 12:54

oooooooooooooh are you sure. Almost everyone I know got to late pregnancy and thought "Oh wouldnt it be great to have a messy short hair cut a la emma watson/posh spice etc". About half actually went for it and OOOOHHHHH they regretted it in a few weeks. For a start they arent that low maintenance.

soppypreggyloon · 26/01/2011 12:59

prettyfly - that's the worry that its the hormones talking. however i'm 26 weeks so not that mentally hormonal at the mo (compared to how bad i'll be by 35 weeks!) i have my hair cut every 6 weeks as it is - its quite short now but still longer than the pixie crop styles.

Had my hair cut after I lost the weight had Ds2.
Loved it, but had to wash and style every morning as bed head look was terrible (massive cows lick and flattened bit at back). Also felt need for more make up as face was more exposed/ didn't want to look like a boy.

Am now in process of growing longer again and needs styling less often can leave hair greasy

What is your face shape etc?

cece · 26/01/2011 13:11

I have one now, despite my hairdresser resisting me for a couple fo years and not doing it! However, she has now admitted she was wrong and thinks it suits me.

I am definitely not delicate and have grey badger stripe at front which I am told is 'striking'.

Oh god I probably look awful but hey I like it!

Easy to look after, wash in shower every morning, add some gel stuff, leave to dry naturally. Couldn't be easier really.

soppypreggyloon · 26/01/2011 16:35

Ok more details....

Round/ oval face. In-between really
Dark brown (dyed due to copious white hairs)
Straight - slight kink when it's longer than 3 inches
Lots of hair but each strand is fine IYSWIM

Daft question now- what are delicate features? I don't have a massive nose or mouth. Suppose i have slight cheek bones, large-ish round eyes, heavy but tidy eyebrows.

plasticface · 26/01/2011 17:15

Do it! It'll grow back if you don't like it, and it's only hair, not a nose job :)

plasticface · 26/01/2011 17:16

I have no plastic surgery by the way, although my name may suggest this. Must change my bloody name!

Bonsoir · 26/01/2011 17:20

Really bad idea, IMO. Very short hair only looks good on gamine types, and late pregnancy/post partum is very rarely a gamine moment.

Long and feminine best for new mothers!

soppypreggyloon · 26/01/2011 18:35

bonsoir it'll never be long before dc2 arrives! I had shoulder length hair when ds arrived and that looked poop in all the pics.

I agree with Bonsoir. As (ahem) the Daily Mail put it today, wrt Helen Mirren's fetching new crop, it really only looks good on the over 60's or gamine under about 25s (see Carey Mulligan and Emma Watson in your OP).

Gamine certainly not what I looked like post (or indeed pre-) partum!

oh poo! think its the hormones but i'm feeling rather determined to go for it!
however i only had it cut a week ago so will not be going back again for 5 weeks so there's time to think it over.

it's a shorter version of this so not too much of a shock length wise to go for the chop.

i never understand phrases like delicate features or gamine. (does it mean not large features? Confused)

do'h sorry the mandy moore style at the bottom.

SoupDragon · 27/01/2011 12:12

If you are heavily pregnant and have a short crop, you run the risk of looking like you have a pinhead.

wendihouse22 · 27/01/2011 12:33

Like that Mandy Moore short "do".

I had long, very think (though fine) hair which is poker straight. I had it shorn in a Lisa Maxwell style (Loose Women) and have to say, it's very well cut and so, though it needs to be washed every day, I really can wash it, put a bit of gel or hairspray on and leave it to dry!! First time I've ever not had to faff about with a hairdryer!

When my hair was long, I washed it each day as well and I enjoyed long hair but like this better. Glad I took the plunge!

Try it. It'll grow!

Hassled · 27/01/2011 12:35

I think it only really works on women with quite slim, well-defined faces. It doesn't work if you have the cheeks of a hamster (me). You need a good jawline and cheekbones - if you have those, go for it because it must make life a hell of a lot easier.

MrsSeanBean · 27/01/2011 13:10

Pregnancy is the worst time to mess with your hair IMO.

I advise caution and second what Bonsoir said.

PlumSykes · 27/01/2011 16:57

I wear my hair in a crop, but have to 'do' it every day, and also do proper make-up, with mascara and eyeliner every day, not just a quick cream blush to wake my face up, in order to not look like a 15 year old boy. I love it, but is def. much more hassle than longer hair, and would have found it a real drag with a newborn.

soppypreggyloon · 27/01/2011 18:29

Ladies my pregnant brain had decided. I'm going for the chop next visit to hairdresser.
All of your down sides I experience already - wash and dry and 'do' it every day as is. Yes I can look like poop without makeup but I hardly ever wear any now and don't have any hair to hide behind. Even if I didn't cut it again before dc2 it would not be long at all so that's no help. and my hairdresser said last time I had loads chopped off that actually long hair does nothing for me.

I fear you will not convince me of the wrongness of this until I do it and hate it!

Cheers for all the input tho! :)

WhatsWrongWithYou · 27/01/2011 23:15

Okay, so you're doing it. Just wanted to try and answer your question re. delicate features, which, as Bonsoir said, are best suited to a pixie cut.

Have a look at Mia Farrow. As B said, classic gamine type - small, bird-like bones, pretty, chiselled features with nothing in the face that jars. Everything is on a small, delicate scale (apart, perhaps, from the eyes, which have an almond-like slant to them).

People like Grace Kelly and Jean Sebourg are of a similar ilk.

I could never have a pixie cut, as, while I have quite delicately shaped eyes and mouth, my nose and jawline could never be described as such (not with out thousands of poundsworth of painful surgery!), so the style would jar on me and never look right.

Good luck with yours though!
