what are the down sides or things to worry about when deciding to chop off all your hair?

i've had short hair before but that was 10+ years ago so can't remember what it was like to live with - oh and that was pre children too!

i'm thinking of an emma watson or a carey mulligan

Good for you!

I went even shorter today....Ok, so I'm not pregnant but, I'm no elfin, willowy youngster either and........ I LOVE IT!

wendihouse22 · 31/01/2011 10:32

Well? Is it done?

soppypreggyloon · 31/01/2011 11:36

sorry wendi i'm not due a haircut for another 5 weeks as it was only done 10 days ago! :)
think the impatience is due to my 'my have things organised' nesting hormones!

i promise to get back on once it's chopped!

I had almost bum length hair cut whilst 6-7 months pregnant with my 2nd baby....i cried all he way home..i looked like a tennis ball stuck onop of a beachball by 8 months...DONT DO IT!!!

wendihouse22 · 31/01/2011 12:41

Ah, you may change your mind before then, then!

Good luck. It's a big step, though!

soppypreggyloon · 22/02/2011 12:30

well the restyle is booked for friday morning so thought i'd up date you.
i'm still planning on doing it so unless my hairdresser talks me out of it then i'll have a bit less hair soon! :)

my hair is short now - far too short to tie back in any way so not too drastic a change. it is also amazingly thick as i am not losing any during this pregnancy. there is just too much of it!

i'm rather excited! Grin

soppypreggyloon · 22/02/2011 12:31

oh and i don't think i've put on too much pg weight yet (31 weeks) as i still have my slight cheek bones. so hoping not to look like even more of a weeble than i do now!

OP posts:
soppypreggyloon · 22/02/2011 18:49

That's almost what I have now! :) mines more flicky at back tho IYSWIM.
I'm thinking more Emma Watson/ Carey mulligan short. It won't be that drastic but should eliminate all need for blow drying! :) probably essential requirement once dc2 arrives!

I do love short hair on the right shaped face.

Things to consider are:

It is a nightmare to grow out if you hate it or change your mind.

It does need cutting v often or it goes out of shape and looks awful. Ditto above when you want to grow it out.

I do think you need to make more effort with makeup and jewellery.

It needs washing every morning. Slept on short hair looks weird.

noddyholder · 22/02/2011 19:04

If you are naturally elfin skinny and pretty yes otherwise no!

shoshe · 22/02/2011 19:09

I am in my 50's and a 'larger' lady Grin

Mine is like Michelle Williams here

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 22/02/2011 22:50

I love that type of hair, don't think I would be brave enough to quite go that short though! I don't think you have to be gorgeous- just confident enough to work it. But theres not that much difference in length between this length and that- either way there is no hair to hide between IYSWIM!

I actually find this hair far more flexible than long hair. I DO things with it now, pretty clips, hairbands, drying it different ways, whereas before it was just down and straight or in a ponytail.

Only thing is going to keep on top of cutting as my hair grows very quick!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 22/02/2011 22:51

I love Michelle Williams hair there shoshe, she looks so pretty!

njhc · 22/02/2011 23:23

dont make any rash decisions.

short hair the majority of the time needs to be washed everyday.

dont do it if your hair id=s very curly
if you have a very good cut it will just fall naturally with good products and a rough dry (hairdryer just blasted around)

you will need a cut every 4-6 weeks
you may need different colour..natural hi/low lights to bring out any texture

very short crops aka emma/carey need small features, that means small noses, no very
angular/pointed features, everything soft, rounded and small, not prominent....although cuts can be adjusted to hide or play down certain features.

you will need to use product

make sure your cut is point cut (with the tips of the scissors) if it is cut with the length of the blade you will end up with a hard masculine style.

it is really important to spend as much as you can afford...cheap haircuts = no effort/unexperienced/cant be bothered stylists

i 90% of the time cut these styles dry so you can see where exactly to leave/remove weight and it gives a much softer/bespoke finishing

go for it...short hair is very liberating and shoulder length(blond highlighted) yummy mummy hair is soooooooooooo boring (and ageing)

dearprudence · 22/02/2011 23:36

Sometimes I have nightmares about having had my hair cut short. I'm so relieved when I wake up.

I have never seen a woman in real life who looks nice with short hair(ie: without the stylist/lighting/professional make-up).

Still, the pregnant heart wants what it wants. I don't want to be a negative nellie, but it actually makes me feel stressed to read all these posts egging someone on to have short hair.

Disclaimer: as a teenager my mum gave me a 'pixie' cut and I totally looked like a boy. To the point that I was called 'sonny' in shops. I am very biased.

ThatVikRinA22 · 22/02/2011 23:37

i had mine all lopped off after having DS (now 19) never again!

i think you need a very strong jawline to carry off short hair.

mine is now a chin length graduated bob and i wouldnt go any shorter, its easy to style, the cut is excellent (mark hill salon in hull - thankyou!)

i would never have mine lopped off again - i felt unfeminine and frumpy. but if you have delicate features and a good jaw line then im jealous....and id go for it, sadly i dont.

Silkflowersanne · 22/02/2011 23:51

Ive had mine all cropped off super short from quite long.........I so love it, i have no regrets at all. it takes no time at all to do daily. I tend to have it trimmed every 4 or 5 weeks to keep it super easy to do. have a look at my pics and see what you think.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/02/2011 00:38

i love it on you silkflowers...prefer it dark to red though i think...

on me - that would just look terrible. i dont have a face for short hair and it was a painful lesson to learn and one that took a very long time to grow out!

Rannaldini · 23/02/2011 00:41

short short hair only looks great on the very young or very lil
and the last poster but she is an oddity

soppypreggyloon · 23/02/2011 08:19

Loads of mixed opinions. :)
I'm afraid I'm now at the point where I'll only be talked out of my hairdresser! She owns the salon where I go and is fab. I also always go every 6 wks (despite it being rather £) as it means I can schedule some peace! :) I also wash it daily already as it sticky up and gets squished in all the wrong places if I sleep on it!
I'll be back tomorrow with my verdict. :)

soppypreggyloon · 25/02/2011 12:25

Yey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Grin

It's short and not too boyish and I love it! Even dh likes it which is impressive as he's not a short hair fan!

And if I look like a teeny head on a big fat body then my hormones are making me oblivious to it! :)

Can we have pics please? I love seeing them!
