Hi all,

since it turns out I'm allergic to hair dye I have now not dyed my long hair for a whole year. It has been hard sporting a two tone look. A very helpful person here put me onto the going grey looking great website which completely turned my views around about grey hair. I can't remember your talk name, I think there was a moon in it? but thank you, you really helped me out. I am soon about to get a chop as I am close to half and half at this stage but it has been a long year. I'm 42 and thought I thought I would dye my hair until 50. My mum never dyed her hair at all and she always looked great. I think I have about another 6 months of growing to be completely dye free.

Yes I wash off conditioner but rub through in some curling balm stuff from Boots. I dry with hair dryer scrunching as I go!

I'm VERY circa 1987

you could try it for a couple of weeks. If you hate it, go back to shampers

gillybean2 · 25/01/2011 19:27

I understand that seashore, I was addressing that suggestion to Popbiscuit. Sorry for any confusion!

seashore · 25/01/2011 19:28

Cece, that's terrible, they're brainwashed!Look at all thos adds, it's hard to stand up against it. Stick with it though, I think the subtlety of grey hair is just lost on some but once you really have a look around often it just doesn't work and as eyebrowqueen mentioned, the maintenance, it's endless.

Lush Henna is good for some grey if you have dark hair or want to go red but it doesn't work for everyone. The Caca Brun one makes the greys goldeny colour so its good for grey which is spread out and looks like highlights. It doesn't last that long though, about 4 weeks till the greys come through again. It leaves hair in great condition although is a real faf to do and smells strongly for a day or so. maybe worth a try though or strand test.

I admire people who go grey though and intend to myself when bit older (I am early 30s) but it seems too young now, I feel it would attract attention. luckily only have a few underneath.

Sorry gillybean2, dd was distracting me there, I should have figured! Smile

Congratulations seashore. I think I remember your last thread (a year ago! Shock). Wasn't Emmylou Harris held up as a Grey Goddess until everyone realised she looks like a goddess regardless of hair anyway? Anyway, what's your skin tone? I love the theory of not dyeing my hair but know I'd age 10 years (at least) instantly due to rubbish hair and pasty skin

GrimmaTheNome · 25/01/2011 19:41

I'm 50 and have never dyed my hair. I'm so lucky, must have saved a fortune by liking the colour I came with and no detectable grey as yet.

Good-condition grey hair can indeed be fab, well done seashore!

poolet · 25/01/2011 19:44

I'm trying to grow my dyed dark brown hair back to my natural colour (mostly grey/white). I'm not very brave (or unlucky as you seashore), so my hairdresser is doing my roots lighter. As I have thick hair, it's hardly noticeable and hopefully, eventually it'll be so light I can have it streaked white and then go au naturel.

I pay £50 every three weeks for root re-touching an it's just getting to be too much.

My friend tried this and got quite a natural (if a little uneven) result.

Teaandcakeplease · 25/01/2011 19:45

I'm only 32 but started dying my hair to make myself more attractive to my H when I felt our marriage wasn't going well (bit of a wasted effort as he was having an affair at the time, that I didn't know about) after I had begun the divorce I decided I was tried of constantly dying my hair a blonde colour and stopped. My scalp had also started to get very sore after dying for some reason.

I wanted to just be "me" my real hair colour was a mousey dark blonde? My roots are now 2 inches and every now and then I think I want to dye it as I don't like how I'm starting to look. So huge congrats from me Seashore for sticking with it. I've already had a bob cut to help get rid of a lot of colour.

*tired

brimfull · 25/01/2011 19:50

I am 48 and luckily have only a few grey hairs. I am just about to dye it to get a nicer colour as my natural browwn is too dark for me.
Some grey is nicer than others though and some people look lovely with grey hair.
My mum is 76 and didn't go grey until very late , just lost colour and went bleurgh which is what is prob happening to me now .

CMOTdibbler · 25/01/2011 19:57

I am thinking very seriously about stopping dying - I am 38, totally white at the front, and well over 50% grey at the back. Fed up of colouring it so often, even though I do it myself.

Would mean chopping my v long hair off though, which might be a good thing

I'm obsessed with the "newbie graduates gallery" now I'd say, most look older but better. Not all though 'Suzanne, our "grayincali"' looks, I think, better before.

But I realise it's not really about what you look like, it's being free of the tyranny of hair dye.

cece · 25/01/2011 20:12

I have posted a link to that website on my facebook page... so my frineds can see it. Hope they get the message. LOL

eyebrowqueen · 25/01/2011 20:22

Cece I'm sure you don't.

Thanks Seashore I'm going to have a look.

I understand the feeling of wanting to not be grey and having shiney hair but you end up chasing your tail with it don't you? Roots always need doing. And home dyes are always darker than real hair colour which itself can be aging.

Also, sorry for getting deep, hair dyeing is about changing something about me to make myself feel better but it never actually does make me feel better. Like, say, a yoga class would. Sorry to sound so worthy!

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 25/01/2011 20:24

i think there are quite a few of those women who look better before the grey, however there are also teh ones who look far better with grey hair. i guess it depends on eye colour, skin tone etc.

sharbie · 25/01/2011 20:30

i have noticed since my hair has gone back to its natural colour that how un-natural some other peoples' hair colour does look tbh.i think you get used to your own look and you become aware of the difference.mine is prob 50/50 and a lightish brown to begin with.

cece · 25/01/2011 20:40

2 people have clicked on 'like' so far. Quite pleased! Smile

timetosmile · 25/01/2011 21:14

Nearly 40 and never dyed!
A fair bit of grey coming round the edges and a definate funky white streak at the front (just like Mum and Grannie!)
Each to their own though!

mslucy · 25/01/2011 21:31

I've been dyeing my hair to hide greys since I was 25 - had the first one at 18 and hair is naturally almost black so grey is uber visible.

It's been a reddish shade for most of that time which I honestly think suits me more than my natural colour (too Goth).

Am now 40 and would rather DIE than go grey - my mother is 71 and still dyes her hair. I work with young people and I don't think it would help if I looked really old!!!

I'm also pg and don't fancy looking elderly as well as the size of a house.

Yes, I'm vain, yes I'm superficial but I actually like my hair best when it's freshly dyed - having my roots done Friday, can't wait.

I also like wearing make-up and unsuitably young clothes (when not in maternity tents) - proud to be 100 per cent mutton.

DuplicitousBitch · 25/01/2011 21:40

i HATE dying my hair but grey hair does just look old

catinthehat2 · 25/01/2011 21:49

GoingGrayLookingGreat

THanks for the tip off to the site.

I packed in the dying lark, just got incredibly bored with the time & expense last year.

NOt interested in the home dye stuff - messy, and like all dye , it ruins your condition after the first couple of weeks of shininess.

So transitioning at the moment.

Wait for this to show up as an article in the Sunday papers though......

DuplicitousBitch · 25/01/2011 22:03

that website is horrible. i considered going grey today when i saw a woman with nice grey hair but that website has put me off

alemci · 25/01/2011 22:19

i think i will stick to dye. maybe in 10 years time

catinthehat2 · 25/01/2011 22:19
Shock

You couldn't cope with haor like this??

I think I would be pretty happy!
