In your opinion. :) I want some that come up quite high and look good but are also really sturdy. (We've got a lot of mud here in the spring.)

Hunters or Joules probably. Prefer Hunters myself.

doggydaft · 08/01/2011 18:34

Muck boots here-hard wearing and keep your feet warm too Grin

DonaAna · 08/01/2011 18:46

I love Ilse Jacobsen. Perfect in rain, snow, mud. I have two pairs, short and tall, both lovely. They are so warm and feel wonderful (soft cotton fleece inside). But if you really are in the countryside and just need something really utilitarian and nobody will see you, probably Muck boots.

Doramustdie · 08/01/2011 18:47

Muck boots definitely, so warm! Hunters are too skinny for my calves. My Muck Boots are the best wells i've ever had.

Lucyintheskywithdiazepam · 08/01/2011 18:49

Muck Boots - has to be the Derwent style, or variations on the Derwent, if you want decent grip on all terrain types. The soles on the other types make them lethal on wet grass. The neoprene lining means they keep your feet warm too.

Hunters are nowhere near as good as they used to be. Not worth the pricetag at all now... you may as well get a cheap pair from Primark.

Another one for muck boots. Hunters are a it last year aren't they?! Actually I wanted hunters (as I'd heard they were so good) however my calves are too fat!!

COCKadoodledooo · 08/01/2011 18:55

Dh has some neoprene lined green ones (Sherwood I think?) picked up fairly cheaply from Winfields. They're wonderfully warm, with hardwearing soles.

Me, I have a pair of (overpriced!) Hunters that I've had for about 15 years. I tend to wear my furlined leather Fat Face boots most though, because they're the only thing I've ever possessed that not only keeps my arctic feet warm, but actually heats them up!

shangrila · 08/01/2011 18:57

Although they look a bit mad, welligogs have fantastic grip. No falls in the snow and ice from anyone in this family during the latest bout of weather. And mine are always admired. try www.welligogs.com

beanlet · 08/01/2011 19:02

Hunters not as good as they used to be, indeed.

Actually, I wear Dunlops for walking on t'moors (ba'tat) when it's muddy, and Sorel snow boots or a pair of extremely nice Finnish snow wellies (can't remember the brand) for the snow.

OracleOfDelphinium · 08/01/2011 19:03

Le Chameau. Hunters are rubbish now they're made in China - all the DCs' Hunters have only lasted a few weeks. My old ones are great, though.

CheerfulYank · 08/01/2011 19:14

Thanks for all the advice! I do live in a rural area, so I want them to be able to handle the slog. Yet people see me occasionally so I want them to look somewhat presentable. :)

Muck boots are lovely but I find mine a bit slippy.

Nora Wellies are also fab (and cheaper) they have a new polyurethane type that are really grippy, light and very warm.

StantonLacy · 08/01/2011 19:22

Aigle Parcours Vario - here

I have spent years in my quest for the perfect welly and this is it. (mind you, I've got very wide calves, so normal wellies never fit - in fact, get stuck on my leg whilst trying on...v.humiliating!)

They fit brilliantly, easily get jeans into them due to the adjustable sides and look great. In fact even DH (who was very wary of them due to the price) said in a surprised voice "Oh, you could almost wear them to go out in" because they look fairly fitted compared to other wellies.
They are pricey, but worth every penny IMO.

pushmepullyou · 08/01/2011 19:22

Anothe vote for Le Chameaux. Alternatively aigles are fab as well

fifitot · 08/01/2011 19:26

Lovely but £90 for wellies!

CheerfulYank · 08/01/2011 19:31

Ooh, those are nice. I don't want to spend a lot, but if they're going to last for a long time it's worth it IMO. Better than having to buy a new pair every year because they're crap.

Le Chameau, I shocked myself by paying about £100 for a pair of neoprene lined Le Chameau boots.......over 9 years ago. Best buy ever, they are still going strong, fantastic Vibram soles so no slipping in the mud (like Hunters doGrin).

nightshade · 08/01/2011 19:34

another muckboot fan.

StantonLacy · 08/01/2011 19:35

I know, I know....It took a loooong time before I could bring myself to click on the "buy" button, but I am so glad I did !!

I'd already tried Huntress and Muckboots with no joy and I needed wellies, needed them I tell you ! (desperately trying to justify the expense to everyone AND myself!) They arrived just in time for all that snow and I could not wait to get them on.

Truly - best ever. Grin

DonaAna · 08/01/2011 19:35

The Finnish boot company beanlet mentions is probably Nokia. I can warmly recommend the "Hai" boots (DD has a pair and they are fab, particularly with felt or lambswool insoles). You can use them in the snow and they are nearly indestructible. For other models, see here.

I use Ilse Jacobsen in the city and Nokia in the country.

orienteerer · 08/01/2011 19:38

So Nokia don't just make phonesGrin??

DonaAna · 08/01/2011 19:48

No, Nokia made rubber boots for decades before they came up with a new product line Wink

beanlet · 08/01/2011 20:11

Yes, that's them - thanks Dona Ana - DH and I both have a pair of Nokian Hai boots. The rubber is sooo soft, and the boots are warm and insulated. I love them. Still use the old Dunlops for country mud though, like all the old farmers. Can't be bothered wiping sheep shit off nice shoes.
