Dog walking date. what on earth do i wear?

Ive a date on the weekend, walking our dogs.
Great - or not so much.

Its going to be muddy, ive already pre warned him about my wellies, which are stylishly orange, with butterflies... just in keeping with the kind of image i like to project on a first date Hmm

I just dont know what coat to wear,
practical but unattractive and shapless dog walking coat, helly hansen thing. Will keep me warm, and will have pockets for mobile phone, lip gloss, money, poo bags etc... ( nice!)

or something a bit nicer, but with no pockets, so will have to take a handbag for other stuff and then will look like a muppet.

I think you should buy yourself something in tweed with leather elbow patches!

I wouldn't worry too much, though. If someone can watch you bend down and pick up a fresh steaming dog cronk on a first date and still find you sexy, he's not going to be put off by a shapeless coat!!

tookoolforskool · 06/01/2011 12:25

oh god. i hadnt even thought that.

WONDERFUL

lipstick and a smile!

jacquiel · 06/01/2011 12:27

I would go with nicer coat, and a small rucksac style bag that would go with it. Or find a nicer fitted outdoor coat in the sales

UnrequitedSkink · 06/01/2011 12:32

Have you got decent legs? If it's not absolutely bloody freezing, wear leggings with the wellies, and a nice jumper dress over the top (a cream aran-y one would look good and I think I saw some in Sainsburys the other day!) then wear the shapeless coat open over the top with a funky scarf. Shiny hair, nice make-up, job done!

UnrequitedSkink · 06/01/2011 12:33

BTW - how does one get oneself a dog-walking date?!

tookoolforskool · 06/01/2011 12:39

i was thinking leggings and jumper dress, am going to chuck some boots in the back incase we end up in a pub, im not going in wellies!

My coat isnt THAT bad, its sort of shaped. In an ' outdoors wear' kind of a way. Its just not my usual thing, however, we are walking dogs, and im walking my dog, and it is my dog walking coat ( worn only in those circumstances)

I would feel like a pleb with a small rucksack.

i dont know why we are doing dog walking, other than its a causal way to meet someone.

I would wear whatever you usually wear when walking your dog - your normal "sort of shaped" Grin coat will be fine. Semi-smart underneath for if you end up in a pub sounds good to me.

If he wants to go on a dog walking date, and you turn up too dressed up, he's going to think "Oh god how high maintenence is she going to be, if she has to get so dressed up just to walk the dog?"

If the idea of the date is casual then I think you should do that - be casual, be yourself, wear what you would wear if you were going dog walking-and-possibly-ending-up-in-a-pub with a friend.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2011 12:52

Oh and good luck Grin don't forget to update us about how it went!

tookoolforskool · 06/01/2011 12:55

which is what i dont want to happen.
So i dont want to be carting a handbag around.
Dog walking coat it is.

Ive pre warned him about the wellies. he thinks its funny... but hes not seen them yet.

Plus the date is at 10:30 on a sunday morning, and noone is dressed up at that time.

( what sort of a weird date is this????)

jacquiel · 06/01/2011 12:59

Sounds really good! Things to distract you if the conversation dries up, chance for a drink afterwards, sounds good fun way to get to know someone!

tookoolforskool · 06/01/2011 13:06

maybe.
we will see.

Good as long as my dog behaves, and doesnt embarass me, and gets on ok with his dog, and its not snowing.

i will update, who knows how it will go.

PLEASE tell me you are going to be in some sort of busy public place? Dog walking date sounds fine but not if you're ending up in some isolated place with a wierdo...

Butterbur · 06/01/2011 13:15

Don't forget to take your purse/wallet if you might end up in the pub. That's the sort of thing I would do.

tookoolforskool · 06/01/2011 13:25

yes. its a busy place, some place where there are lots of walkers, right near a vistors centre. he said if im not happy when i get there then we can go somewhere else.

ill take money with me, in one of my many, and practical, if not all that flatting pockets.
Hmm

thermal vest is a must - means you can wear your less sensible clothes and still have a smile on your face - your date will be none the wiser

TigerseyeMum · 06/01/2011 23:06

Could you wear a casual bag, slung casually and nonchalantly across your body? Then you could wear whichever coat you fancy?

And any leather boots instead of wellies if you feel a bit conscious about them being...orange?

A nice scarf, earring, hair tarted up, you'll look fab anyway.

Enjoy.

Oh, and don't forget your dog Blush

TigerseyeMum · 06/01/2011 23:07

*Earring, not earring. With just one earring you might look like a pirate.

TigerseyeMum · 06/01/2011 23:08

Earrings Blush

Shut up now. Go sit down Tigerseye.

Ooo good luck!

tookoolforskool · 09/01/2011 15:23

have to update

Went with nicer coat and satchel type bag over one shoulder.

and the pink/orange wellies.

Date went really well. i actually doubt it would have made any difference what i wore.

I also need a cold shower as he is HOT.
We walked for about an hour, then he asked if i fancied getting a drink, so we went to a pub. So glad i wore nicer coat, and remembered to fling some other non pink boots in the back of the car.

Then he asked if i fancied getting some food. So we did, and ive only been home about 10 mins.

He said he had a a really nice time and would i want to do it again, i said yes :)

and ive had a text from him before i even got home.

Thats good right???

Just read this thread and love it Smile
Such a quirky date! Sounds as though it went really well too.

Perhaps date 2 could be non dog walking so you can show off the more glam you?!!

Chatelaine · 09/01/2011 17:33

Did your dogs get on? Thinking 100 Dalmatians Grin

Chatelaine · 09/01/2011 17:36

Dogs are really good chaperones by the way, bit of a barrier as you are responsible for them iyswim.
