Clinique 3 step cleaning method - does it work for anyone?

A colleague of mine came into work a while ago looking radiant, she said she had been using the clinique cleane, exfoliate, moisturise stuff and it had worked a treat.

So I went and had a chat with the clinique ladies, could not quite remember what she had and they said it must have been this as this is the product system that gives the most dramatic difference to skin.

Discussed that I am either number 2 or 3, they had no number 2, so i bought number 3 (the trial pack to see if I like it), and she gave me a number 2 moisturiser to use if I found the gel too drying.

I have used it for almost 2 weeks, but I don't always use it twice a day. Do i have to use it twice a day, every day to see the effect, if I only do one day sometimes will that really make a difference? I find it a little drying, and also a few spots have come up, is that normal? Does it actually work at all or have I been conned?

I bought it, the full size pots so about £50 and it gave me spots Sad

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 08:36

oh no did the spots not go away at all while you used it? i sort of hoped these spots where because it was removing all the debris from my pores, we shall see.

Did you know it has a 28 day money back guarantee? that is what swayed me into buying it as the woman said if I was not happy within the 28 days I could go back and either get my money back or change it for another product. Of course they will attempt to persuade you to try something else first.

The starter kit was £20, I could not bear to have spend £50 on it and it not work!

I use it and it is very good. No spots. Good clear skin.

If its not working for you, maybe you should go back and ask for the number two. I don't see the point of being assessed as a number two and then being sold the number three. Makes a mockery of having the number system really. Go back and see if they will produce the correct product for you. Worth a try.

It works for some but not everyone. I used it years ago and it was far too harsh for my skin.

Have also used the Dramatically Different Moisturiser at different stages and found through trial and error that it gives me huge painful spots. A few friends found the same.

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 09:21

The woman i spoke to said I had combination to oily skin so felt that number 3 would work ok with the dramatically different moisturiser as a backup, but guess i really do need number 2. I shall go back. She did say i could exchange it within 28 days anyway so pretty certain they will change it.

No i had no idea it had a 28 day money back guarantee! I bought it before the recent advertising push so maybe it didnt then

I do use the moisturiser/toner occassionally now (like ever week or two) and thats fine but everyday was just to harsh i think

JaxTellersOldLady · 02/01/2011 09:30

I use it - but not every day and it does work, although the spots being brought out drive me insane.

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 09:42

jax did you/do you find after the spots have been brought out that they go and the skin settles? the blackheads on my nose have come up to the surface and I am tempted to go buy some of that Bior nose strip stuff just to whip them out Grin

Spots are Really Bad here, as I am a picker !

OP posts:
JaxTellersOldLady · 02/01/2011 09:46

ooh dont pick them, that is yuk... says me who also cant help but pick.

Yes, after the first few days when the spots and crud has come out of the skin it does settle down again. Just keep using it for a few weeks and you should be ok.

kittya · 02/01/2011 09:46

I have dry skin and Ive never found it to be great tbh. I bought it in the States this year as it was so cheap but have just kept it incase I run out of my usual stuff. Its not good for anti aging thats for sure!

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 09:47

i am trying really really hard not to pick them. But I find myself sat in front of the tv and I check my skin to see if it is smooth and find a bump...then that is it !

If you have spots, I am surprised they didn't suggest the anti-blemish 3-step, it's brilliant!

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 09:52

jolly i didn't have spots when I bought the stuff, just now I have started it Grin

It's not the miracle they like to think it is.

I am a great fan oof Clinique as I used to have terrible facial eczema.

HOWEVER, i do not use their 3-step.
If you think about it, nothing that is on your face for a few seconds is going to give you wonderful skin.

Good skin is down to genes , lifestyle and diet more than what you use to remove make up.

TBH any cleanser that removes make up is fine. I have tried the Clinique ones for dry skin- a cream cleanser- andit's nice but very £££. Currently I am using L'Oreal which is great.

The toner in the 3 step system is not essential- you cna use damp cotton wool or a piece of muslin to remove the residues of cleanser and that will exfoliate just as well.

I don't rate the yellow Clinique moisturiser at all- it's very thin.

If you want to spend your cash wisely, I'd say invest in a good moisturiser and a sunblock.

I use Clinique Youth Surge but also like their SuperDefense, then on top I use City Block 365 days a year, and one of theri foundations.

CybilScissorhands · 02/01/2011 12:00

I found it very very drying

did the clinique lady have a little roll of sellotape hanging round her neck?

MadameOvary · 02/01/2011 12:05

The toner used to strip my skin, it was awful. I do love their face powder tho.

DH bought me this for Christmas - I was already using Dramatically Different moisturiser and Clarins facial wash so I was sceptical about the clarifying lotion, but I really like it. It wakes my skin up and it feels lovely and soft. Don't always do it twice a day though.

higgle · 02/01/2011 15:20

I have used the soap and dramatically different moisturise for about 27years! I may be a slightly tubby shortarse but I have great skin and am generally though to be about 15 years younger than my real age. I really think that the moisturiser is amazing and pvery much responsible for my complexion.

bluebump · 02/01/2011 15:27

I use it and it's the only thing that stops me getting spots all the time (even now in my 30's)! That's despite the clarifying lotion stinging when I use it (I'm on no3).

I watched Liz Earle on QVC once talk about how toners shouldn't sting when you put them on so I stopped using my Clinique for a while but my skin got terrible.

I do mix and match brands, at the moment i'm using the Clinique soap and clarifying lotion but an Elemis moisturiser and in the evenings I use Cleanse & Polish followed by the clarifying lotion.

I can't use the 7 day scrub as it's too strong for my skin.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 02/01/2011 15:35

I really like it I did try it a few years ago and hated it.
Bought my mum some aromatics more recently and got some stuff as a free gift and loved it.
One thing I did find though is the Dramatically different can be a bit rich for my skin I did need to use a lighter moisturiser

GrizzlyMacDuff · 02/01/2011 20:20

ok, so, a mixed bag but the drying skin is quite common it seems. I find that the face wash is ok, a bit dry but not too bad, the clarifying lotion is really drying, and the moisturiser is too light, so need to use the dramatically different one. I used to use Avene moisturiser and that was it, but really need an exfoliation lotion of some kind as I get dry/oily patches in my tea zone, however, I don't use it for removing make-up really, as I have a make-up remover/cleanser for that, and also don't wear make-up every day, mainly as th dry patches make me look like a crazy old person as foundation sticks to the dry bits! So i don't use it often.

cybil no sellotape! but she did actually have very good complexion, which surprised me as often those selling this stuff just cover it up with their make-up!

I recently bought the new lazier serum and got a free gift bag including the dramatically diff moisturizer. I ran out of moisturiser about a week before Christmas, so started using and now have huge spots. I'm not convinced and didn't notice any difference with the lazier stuff either.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/01/2011 02:51

Really harsh products...stick your diamond engagement ring into some clarifying lotion and see how clean it comes up!!

Dermalogica much better IMO, but as with every product it's horses for courses.
