Did the MNers who weren't going to buy anything in 2010 succeed?

For various reasons I haven't been online much in 2010 - but I do remember around the time I went 'offline' there was a big thread about not buying any more new stuff (other than essentials/ underwear etc) in 2010.

Does anyone remember this - and did anyone succeed?

Hello tuple :)

I hope I've spent more sensibly this year too. Poor you with swollen tummy (hope it wasn;t too painful) - lucky for you there were maxi dresses aplenty - v comfortable.

Hello also LTEC :) I've marked my place on the avid thread.

Laura Ashley!

You do realise you are going to have to link to it, don;t you

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 18:33

Higgle - yes I plan to do some major e-baying this year too. It's so true aboyt only wearing a small proprotion nof what you have. I think January (at least until end of month when people have been paid) is not generally thought a good time though - or maybe it would be if less people were selling - what do you think?

Hear Hear,LTECGrin
Was on original thread then jumped ship to W and A thread!
Actually in the spirit of the original have not bought as much at all,but have been happier with what I have purchased!

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 18:35

Oh dear - sorry for typos, if only you coule see the state of my laptop keyboard you would understand. In fact I think I will have to take a photo and add to my gallery.

I always knew I'd buy stuff as had spent the past however many years pregnant/bf with attendent weight fluctuations.

And no shopping for a year - well thats just wrong isn't it Wink.

Generally pretty uninspired by the sales though - am bored bored bored of winter and already thinking of spring/summer.

A&W thread is lovely though but people forget we post a lot of links to stuff that we don't actually buy Grin. Of course do buy some of it though Smile.

Am very much hoping my new look pleather jacket was included in styleporn Wink

CybilScissorhands · 28/12/2010 18:48

Most of the stuff I have seen linked to on A and W is for billionaires only

Reet out of my league

dexter73 · 28/12/2010 19:01

The downside of the A&W thread is that I now covet things completely out of my price range (Belstaff boots!!!).

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 19:06

Ooh dexter, I saw some Belstaff boots (which I'd been lusting after for a while) in the net-a-porter sale yesterday. Still not succumbed though, but tempting - very tempting :)

I managed to not buy anything until about Easter, when I started getting twitchy after booking a holiday and needed new bikini/wraps/hat etc.

I was thelunar66 or something back then and have changed names a few times.

dexter73 · 28/12/2010 19:17

Those boots are lovely but still about £100 too much for me!

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 19:21

Yup I know. I bought these this year - and very good they were on the ice too!

dexter73 · 28/12/2010 19:22

We must be boot twins! I love those Topshop ones.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/12/2010 19:22

I could never sign up to no clothes shopping for a year! Shock, although inspired by that thread I have tried to only buy things that I love rather than buy something because it will do. And as a consequence I have bought less than I would usually do Smile

LetThemEatCake · 28/12/2010 19:24

I bought my belstaffs in the nap summer sale and think they're working out quite reasonable, cost per wear. Think I paid about 250 for them? But have worn virtually every day since October and there's a good few months of winter left... Agree, pricey though.

One of my friends has had same pair of belstaffs for 7 years. They still look fabulous

Anyway, back to op. It was penth who started the use it all up thread, and last I heard she was doing rather well with it.

Celery · 28/12/2010 19:25

I failed miserably, but would like to try again.

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 19:27

Oh yes, I forgot the 'use it all up' side to it! I have been doing well with that - I used to hoard toiletries for some inexplicable reason, but actually exhausted my supply of bath oil last week. Yippee, I'm off to Jo Malone in the next week or so! (And I have a whole year's worth of bath oil budget to spend! :) )

I don't actually need any new boots! I have a lovely pair of black boots that I bought over 3 years ago for £100 from a local shoe shop. They are still going strong and I haven't seen a pair yet that I prefer so I will keep wearing them for a few more years. They go with everything and are adjustable so can wear them with tights or jeans tucked in.

Fleecy · 28/12/2010 21:20

I joined and didn't buy anything for a while, then fell off the wagon spectacularly and joined the wise and avid thread instead. Having said that, I just went five weeks without buying anything (I realise this is perfectly normal to plenty of people but not to me Grin), bought two things in the sale and am now not buying again for a month or two.

Am an eBay fan myself with a smattering of high street (although made my first NAP purchase this week...).

We have all budgets and lots of different styles on the thread so even if I can't afford some of it, I can still be inspired to try new looks. Join us!

hf128219 · 28/12/2010 21:23

It's a great thread. Purchases from NAP, Primark and Oxfam! Open to all! Xmas Smile

eshermummy · 28/12/2010 22:14

I'm a regular on W&A too.
I think I have bought 2 things from NAP in my life ever and that was in the sales.
I do have a filthy Outnet habit but am trying to kick that as am currently mostly keeping DHL afloat as most of what I order goes straight back.
I buy HEAPS but I also take back heaps and very little of what I actually link to ever actually makes it into my wardrobe.
IMO W&A is like a giant communal changing room Shockor sounding board to get ideas from, although as others have said, a lot of stuff other than clothes gets discussed too Grin
I didn't ever join the buy nothing for a year thread as I knew that wouldn't be something I could or would want to do happily but I have tried to exercise more control over what I buy keep and only buy things that fit and hang perfectly on me and that I really really love.
So I think I did take away something of value from the original premise even if I didn't stick to it in any way.

I'm not an A&W regular but lurk there the whole time and feel the need to defend it. Out of sheer nosiness I have seen how lovely the ladies on there are and supportive of each other. Plus they are just so darned .

I've picked up so much from them all and regularly indulge in copycat buys - but very reasonably priced ones like Janice and the Feathers dress. It is well worth a read for inspiration. It really isn't irrelevant to those with modest budgets, there's plenty discussed which would appeal to all. And they are very friendly.

Best thread going IMHO.

CybilScissorhands · 29/12/2010 15:38

But when do you wear all those clothes?

Serious question

Is your wardrobe like a revolving door?

RipMacWinkle · 29/12/2010 16:47

I also joined the orginal thread and failed. But I've definitely cut down on the random buying-for-the-sake-of-it. Have been on mat leave this year and now going back to work so am hoping to spend some cash on some new threads.

Have dipped in and out of the W&A threads this year (usually to ask questions Blush!) and have to say that, whenever I have, everyone has been more than welcoming and given me their honest opinion, which I appreciated.
