How to be glam

WherecanIhide · 23/12/2010 21:37

Hi everyone,

What do you think makes someone glam? How can I glam up without looking ott? Is it a case of wearing lots of make-up/having a stylish hairstyle etc?

I'm 38, dowdy and want to look better but don't know where to start. I'm a size 14, wear skinny jeans but somehow always look dowdy.

Any advice/tips would be very much appreciated. xxx

Depends on what you mean by glam.

I'd deffo start with a decent haircut, a bit of colour on it, and a bit of make up. Not a lot, just enough to make you look groomed.

And accessories. perhaps a scarf or a nice necklace or something?

Clure · 23/12/2010 22:20

I see it as being groomed, good haircut makeup, clothes look clean and ironed, well put together. Deffo accessories! Also good posture!

Thankyou for your replies.

Basically boils down to more of what I'm trying to do now - but failing at Xmas Grin

Based on my most glamorous friend I would say there is day to day glam - clothes clean and ironed and cared for - no loose buttons or scuffed shoes. Nails neat and tidy; regular hair cuts and colour if need be; daily make up; nice co-ordinated accessories.

Night out glam seems to be salon styled hair; manicure; fake tan; fabulous outfit with fab shoes, bag, jewellery etc.

As I am very un-glam and aim for just clean and tidy feel free to disregard all the above though Xmas Grin

'Glam', the less cultured version of 'luxurious', is (to me)wearing things that aren't necessary, or indeed practical.

Fringing, texture, accessories etc. Good nails, hair done, skyscraper heels and great make-up.

Personally, I always feel glamorous when I've taken care of every part of the outfit, and feel confident about it all. Throwing it on never equals glam.

RockChick1984 · 27/12/2010 11:28

To me looking glam is about looking polished. Get hair cut and possibly coloured regularly and keep it styled. Nails painted, or at least kept neat and with clear polish on at all times. Either high heels or very pretty flat shoes, nothing in between (heels are the more glam option unless it's an Audrey Hepburn type outfit). Make up not too obvious but definately there. If u r not feeling glam the best thing I can suggest is go to debenhams or somewhere that offers a free personal shopper service, explain what u r wanting and let them help you style your clothes (u don't have to buy anything, or just get the accessories they suggest if u like them) and while u r there get a free make over on one of the beauty counters (again it's no obligation so can just see what suits u and how to apply then buy cheaper own brand stuff at boots, although I've always found that I'd prefer to buy the proper stuff) and for your hair, if you see someone with a really good cut ask them where they go - that's how I found my current hairdresser and she is amazing! Since goin there 3 of my friends have started using her as well coz they can't get over what a difference she's made! I'm rubbish at bein glam, I do try and keep my hair nice but at the moment I'm pregnant and plan on doin some major shopping once I've lost my baby weight, as I feel so dowdy at the moment! Some of my friends r fantastically glam so tips r really courtesy of them! Xxx

BoysAreLikeDogs · 27/12/2010 11:29

eyebrows are key

get them tidied professionally and regularly

TrillianAstra · 27/12/2010 11:32

Not lots of makeup, but the right makeup, stuff that suits you and is well applied and appropriate to the occassion.

Shiny shiny shiny hair is the thing I think of when people say 'glam' in a good way. No idea how to achieve it though.

biryani · 27/12/2010 18:07

Tidy eyebrows. Clothes that are clean and co-ordinated. plenty of bling (earrings a must). Chunky necklace (or if not, scarf). Make-up a must, always. Nails manicured or at least cut and buffed. Hair done. And always heels, NEVER flats.

NotEnoughTime · 27/12/2010 20:26

Nice/sexy/matching underwear always makes me FEEL glam and if I FEEL glam then it gives me great self confidence and then I tend to LOOK glam iyswim.

bambiandthumper · 27/12/2010 20:29

good eyebrows
red lipstick and a lick of mascara. THATS IT FOR MAKEUP. (assuming you have good skin of course)
blowdry
fab black towering heels
nun's fingernails, sluts toenails

thothefrostwascruelladepoppins · 27/12/2010 20:54

No no no to fake tan. There is glam, and there is gaaak. Xmas Smile

happilyeverafter · 27/12/2010 21:35

Good shoes/great makeup/blowdried hair and clothes that fit and flatter is always a great start.

I think dressing appropriately is massively underrated.

Glam when I'm in a sludgy field full of cows means a slick of lippy and a fabulous scarf with my warm coat/wellies.

Glam for work means heels/belted dresses/pencil skirts and fitted blouses.

Glam for a softplay date with friends means a statement necklace and luxe knit over my jeans and top.

Then some places glam has no place. I always giggle at girls working out with impractical clothing on and ott makeup flicking their hair about.

I think the biggest thing is having confidence in yourself. If you are confident and it shows then I think it makes a huge differece.

GoldFrakkincenseAndMyrrh · 28/12/2010 08:18

There are so many different types of meanings of glam that what looks fab on one woman - full face and heels for example - will look horrendous on another who looks glam with flats, a slick of eyeliner and a chunky necklace.

IMO:

Fitted clothes (not tight, tailored!) that don't have stains or holes or dangling threads
Make up which suits
Ditto jewellery

As has been said, if you feel good (and comfortable) then you will look a hundred times better than if you feel like a little girl playing with mummy's clothes and makeup.

MummyTo2MonkeysAnd1Bug · 28/12/2010 08:57

IMO the following equal 'glam'

Well fitting feminine clothing

Minial make up - just enough to conceal flaws and enhance good features

Classy jewellery - nothing too 'bling' just understated and chic

Heels!

Shiny healthy hair and no roots!!

CointreauVersial · 28/12/2010 12:21

Happilyeverafter - good answer! I can manage the glam when I'm at work, or on a night out, but it's the field of cows that I struggle with!

It's very easy to look like a bag lady when you dress down.

FattyArbuckel · 28/12/2010 15:43

cows can't tell if you are glam or not so don't waste the effort trying to impress 'em

ifancyashandy · 28/12/2010 18:49

For me, I feel better when I am 'done'

Face on (tinted moisturiser / mascara / eye liner / blusher / lip gloss or tinted balm)

Body lotion

Heels

Nails painted / filed

Matching underwear (even if I am just hanging out at home)

Neat / ironed clothing

Hair cut and coloured and blow dried daily

Earrings in

Handbag matches my shoes (so black for black shoes / brown handbag for brown or red)

Perfume

Going to the gym regularly so feel 'fitter'
and yes to the posture thing.

CybilScissorhands · 28/12/2010 18:52

I get called 'glam' quite often

I think its because I wear lippy round the clock

FellatioNelson · 28/12/2010 18:59

Depends what you mean by 'glam'. Some people are very glamorous, but not necessarily classy, elegant or chic.

I'd be choose to be considered chic over glamorous any day!

noddyholder · 28/12/2010 19:02

Glam is not achievable with a hairdo and a scarf ime.It is a built in thing which is evident in some people when tey are not made up and in their pjs.You can look groomed and stylish with 'things' but if you are truly glam you just are

CybilScissorhands · 28/12/2010 19:02

youre glam aren't you nodders

MrsSeanBean · 28/12/2010 19:17

I know what you mean noddy, and it may just be semantics - but I think anyone can 'glam up' (lippy/ accessories / salon hair) but not necessarily have style.

IMO 'style' is the magic thing which some people have when wearing very ordinary clothes - a sort of built in knack of knowing what to mix with what without thinking about it, and creating new and original combinations (often with unexpected colours).
