How to be glam

WherecanIhide · 23/12/2010 21:37

Hi everyone,

What do you think makes someone glam? How can I glam up without looking ott? Is it a case of wearing lots of make-up/having a stylish hairstyle etc?

I'm 38, dowdy and want to look better but don't know where to start. I'm a size 14, wear skinny jeans but somehow always look dowdy.

Any advice/tips would be very much appreciated. xxx

Don't shatter my illusions!

Well fitting clothes - no muffin tops or too tight jeans.

Understated jewellery, not too flashy and not all matching (ie. not a earring/necklace/ring set from Next)

Scarf - get a couple of good quality silk scarves in different colours and practice how to tie them.

Shoes - doesn't have to be heels, but clean, not scuffed, not down at heel.

Handbag - don't buy dozens of cheap bags. One or two decent quality handbags.

Think about having your colours done - I am going to do this next year. A consultant told me recently that I should wear purple/lilac and I have bought a couple of tops and scarves in these colours and have had lots of compliments.

practicing tying scarves is not glam, casually throwing them on- yes or ideally being tied to a vintage bed with them while waiting to be ravaged Now thats glam Wink

MmeLindt · 28/12/2010 21:02

Yes, but you have to practice at home so that you can glamly throw a scarf on when in a restaurant.

I watched two French women on the beach this year as they both grabbed a scarf, wrapped their heads in some kind of ultra-glam turban thing with just a twist and a twirl of the scarf.

I would have looked like I had tied a nappy on my head if I had attempted it, but they looked fabulous.

oh how i love to be glam :)

always rememebr that style and fashion are Not At All the same thing

bluebump · 28/12/2010 21:25

It was my new years resolution to try and look a bit more glam and groomed this year which failed miserably so i'll just roll it over to this years new years resolutions!

CybilScissorhands · 28/12/2010 22:11

noddy what a glimpse into your private life we had then

poshsinglemum · 28/12/2010 23:41

Oh dear; I just bought the most blingtastic dangly vintage-style chandelier earrings from a vintage boutique today. Thought they were glam but understated they aint. Mabe I'm not as glam as I thought.

FellatioNelson · 29/12/2010 00:22

Statement 'pieces' like vintage chandelier earrings are great - so long as you know what to pair them with - which means everything else should be simple and understated so they stand out, and don't get lost in a dog's dinner.
So no chunky necklace and fussy blouse then!

A bare decolletage is what you need.

noddyholder · 29/12/2010 16:07

Oh no not me just anyone truly glam!otherwise scarves are terribly provincial and middle aged

MABS · 30/12/2010 17:57

I assure you Nodday IS glam and gorgeous in rl, her advice is veeery good :)

madammecholet · 30/12/2010 19:01

I believe glamour comes from within, its about how you feel not how you look. You can look glamourous in jeans and a T as well as in a little black dress.

Its about being confident in yourself, using what you were given to their best and enjoying yourself.

ahem...now off to don chanel rouge noir, sip a cosmo and snuggle into my fur wrap.

FunnyLittleFrog · 30/12/2010 19:46

Been thinking about this and am sure it's much easier to be glam if you are slim and can afford good quality clothes, accessories and hair.

noddyholder · 31/12/2010 10:13

Right back at ya mabs Now you are REALLY glam and I am merely an impostor!Although I have to say brighton gals are all gorge must be in the water Grin

MABS · 31/12/2010 15:21

i have my moments when i can be arsed xx
