Hello everyone, I had a fab New Year's Day - didn't have too bad a hangover as I was hostess so kept putting my glass down and forgetting about it, didn't go to bed until 3:45 (!!) but weirdly, don't feel too tired. I then had a HUGE clean up, took down the decorations and closed the kitchen so 9 of us went to Pizza Express; naughty but oh so nice.

I have also ordered Janice in navy and stripe from the recommendations here and have been browsing the Isabella Oliver spring preview and liking lots. My grey cashmere scarf from them has been fab this winter.

Children go back to school on Wednesday and I am very eager to strip out my wardrobe and start again - I feel inspired and, for once, it's not all dependent on me losing weight! Thank you ladies, I hope you don't mind if I continue to pop in for advice and inspiration.

mistletoeandjuan · 01/01/2011 22:25

Phew. The inlaws have left the building Smile

Everything - sorry that it's come to this - it does sound as if you did everything in your power to sort things out Sad. I sincerely hope that 2011 is the start of fantastic new things for you.

My New Years resolutions are the same as always:

  1. Eat more healthily
  2. Be more organised
  3. Swear less
  4. Improve my domestic skills

Have already broken numbers 3 & 4 by fucking up ruining the yorkshire puddings at lunchtime.

I honestly think that one of my best buys this year was a breton t shirt from primark. I wore it so much that I will be following bloss's advice and be looking for a better quality version for this year as it is now in the rag bag. I have also enjoyed my diesel denim skirt and my studded boots.

My friend dropped by in these today - quite nice I think for the price.

Paribus · 01/01/2011 22:29

vinvinoveritas, can I hijack? Mayfair hotel is lovely, it's right next to Louvre, 4 star, boutique, but very child-friendly- stayed several times with DD and they were very helpful- www.paris-hotel-mayfair.com/en/hotel-4-stars-paris.php.

Can I also ask which hotel did you use sans DC? Would be v grateful for information!

Happy New Year everyone and how quickly 2010 has gone. So much to catch up on this thread, not sure where to start.
Welcome to de-lurkers.
Bonsoir sorry to hear about your DP's friend.
Everything great namechange. Hope the LL checks go well. Sending you positive vibes to get through the next few months.
Tracey you are the Bree van der Kamp of the thread! I have tried to do a clear out today, and am Shock at how much stuff I have. Three bin bags of clothes later and I still don't have room to put away the ironing.

I'm all for budgeting will aim for £250 - 300 p/m. I have enough shoes and handbags which tend to be my high value purchases.
Cake I got JO for xmas and it mentions your DH. If I ask him nicely do you think he will sign it for me?
Did anyone see Kylie rocking the leopard maxi on Jools last night?

Tracey I have just finished watching the first two Downton Abbey and am hooked. Definitely feeling the period vibe. Have you read anything by the Mitford sisters? I am now the owner of an Amazon Kindle so hopefully will get a chance to read more this year. Especially the classics which are free.

Against my better judgement, have ventured into the sales. Got a cashmere charcoal jumper - that I don't need so I'm taking it back. Also noticed a gift I got for my best friend is half price - so bought it and will return using original receipt (wise?)

Apologies to anyone I've missed - off to catch up properly now.

Fleecy · 01/01/2011 23:04

choo we just watched the first two episodes as well and are also hooked. Will be glued to the telly as soon as DC in bed tomorrow!

Tracey, have you read the Cazalet Chronicles, by Elizabeth Jane Howard? I bought them after India Knight recommended them in The Shops as perfect sick-bed reading, and they are heaven. Four big fat books, but still not enough. Can't recommend highly enough.

blossoming · 02/01/2011 07:13

everything, you could take this opportunity to rid yourself of unwanted stuff that weighs you down. Keep a couple, then out with the old!

traceybath · 02/01/2011 08:27

Oh thanks Plum - they look just the ticket - have ordered Smile

DH off doing a race and I'm making bread and lemon cake as last flurry before abstinence starts tomorrow.

So anyone still waiting for any sales - I'm still waiting for hush as want some new pyjamas and love the fit of theres and brora for a cardigan and some new wristwarmers.

I didn't see Kylie but saw some pictures on Daily Mail website and she looked scarey!

Bonsoir · 02/01/2011 08:36

The Cazalet Chronicles are fabulous. My paternal grandmother was still alive when I read them and she confirmed that all the period details about that part of the world (Kent/Sussex border) were absolutely accurate.

carciofi · 02/01/2011 09:03

Everything, I am really sorry that things didn't work out and hope that 2011 is good to you.

Plum, thank you, I like that cardigan and it is not maternity, which is always a plus. :)

Fritzi, do you have water again? The water supply was sporadic when we were staying in my father's house. He said that the day we left it went off for three days, horrible!

I am also waiting for the Hush sale.

My budget is about £200 per month for clothes, I want to save most of it from now on for the summer so I can go shopping when the baby arrives. First thing on my list will be a pair of Goldsign skinny jeans to replace Paige maternity skinny jeans!

LetThemEatCake · 02/01/2011 09:22

morning all and happy new year

hope that this year is kind to everyone and that it brings you the fresh start you need everything and vin

OWW I absolutely love that stripey cowl top - would it be totally out of order to ask you to see whether a small is available in the navy when you are in the store? Smallest online seems to be M.

am quite tired after NYE and a neighbour's New Year's Day party yesterday after dropping sister at airport. Got friends visiting from NYC so we are off to meet up with them today.

I did smile to think of - what, 4? - of us all wearing our red P&J dresses on NYE.

juan thank you so much for your lovely comments

hope everyone else is starting the year well and happily

re budget have decided on £250 per month but that is just for clothes. Beauty/ going out/ phone etc are totally separate.

Choo whose signature do you want?? Dh or JO??

FritziGreenEyes · 02/01/2011 10:13

Have just started to fill another Amazon basket with the Cazalet chronicles and JO's latest book. I love books almost more than clothes Grin

FritziGreenEyes · 02/01/2011 10:17

carciofi Thanks for asking: Water is back. Had a lovely long and hot shower yesterday afternoon! Your poor Dad, three days without water... Hope you are feeling well and can enjoy your pregnancy. Looking forward to (at least) two W&A births this year Smile.

FritziGreenEyes · 02/01/2011 10:32

Forgot to say that I heard review of a film the other day, which made me think of all ballet lovers on this thread: La Danse, a documentary about the Paris Opera. Has anyone seen it?

carciofi · 02/01/2011 10:35

Fritzi, hurray for hot water! I feel fine thanks. I find out the sex of the baby on Jan 20th. :o

AllBuggiedOut · 02/01/2011 10:50

Happy new year all! Hope it is filled with happiness and excitement.

Thanks again for you advice re red dress. And yes bloss, Brintons carpet

DH has just announced that his task for the day is to clear out this study. Which is likely to involve a lot of moving stuff to an already very cluttered garage and dumping it in the middle Hmm. Better go and supervise...

roary · 02/01/2011 10:59

Hello all....
Feel totally jetlagged and disgusting after 5am arrival yesterday. It did perk me up to read through the past couple of pages but I am too tired to do more right now! Anyone care to give a summary?

Hope you have had a good holiday time and will catch up properly soon.

bunnymother · 02/01/2011 11:52

Talking to DH about my clothing budget... He said "tell the ladies that you don't like to be constrained by numbers, and just buy what you need, look at how much that costs and so you budget backwards." Listen DH, no one likes a smart arse! Think my budget is £100 per month for clothes, and beauty etc is on top of that. My hair costs £140 every 2 or 3 months, plus the cabs to get there (am cringing as I type)... We spend lots on Wonder Nanny, though, so that's where the cashola flows to here.

everything - have been thinking about you a lot. I hope you are happy w your decision - imagine you would be as you have done your best and waited to be sure. I would have done the same in your situation.

Carciofi - sorry DVF cardi is no good!! Hope you find The One soon.

Tracey - watching Enid Blyton film w Helena Bonham Carter - monster woman, but quite liking the 30s and 40s style, and thinking a Brora cardi would be a nice nod. Hope the sale comes soon.

Am still pondering the Blochs, as I want to be sure they are for me (French Sole ballerinas were out too fast for the £££ and can't afford another such mistake due to limited ££ for clothes/shoes) and am thinking would get more wear out of pale silver. Must make up mind - this isn't a Major Purchase so just choose!

Thanks again for all the feeding advice - you are all worth your weight in gold and can't tell you how much your kind and wise words have helped. As foreshadowed, have decided to move to exclusively formula feeding. Just in time for growth spurt - constant feeding yesterday from 2-6pm, then again this morning from 8am till 5 mins ago. Oops, spoke too soon...

bunnymother · 02/01/2011 11:55

Forgot - Fritzi I FEEL for you w water situation - it was dire dire dire!! So glad it is back - may the hot water flow forever!

Bonsoir · 02/01/2011 11:57

I think I want to be very wise about ballerina purchases this spring and buy one good pair with decent soles - I pound the pavements a lot in my life, and I have found that thin leather-soled ballerinas just don't give my feet and knees enough support.

Thinking about one pair of Tod's ballerinas...

blossoming · 02/01/2011 12:13

Just back from the nativity. Mum and mil fighting over dd! Didn't wear the sequins, wore stripey janice again. What a great dress for my life!

Welcome back roary. No big catching up, we've been a bit quiet I think. Personally I have overindulged in sausage rolls and red wine, I have finally got my shoeboots and I've started 6 week 6 pack DVD.

everything, did you ever see Life Laundry? (books available on amazon). Perfect for moving home/on.

AllBuggiedOut · 02/01/2011 12:15

bunny the Blochs are the only part of my order I am leeping - although having to exchange them as one of the jewels has come off. But they're fab with jeans and I think will last well. They're somehow sturdier than the other Blochs I have.

Welcome home roary Somebody will be along with a better one I'm sure, but very briefly, everything and vin are making life-changing decisions, in-laws are hard work, we are heeding advice from bonsoir and trying to adopt a healthy relationship with food this year and lots of us (but wisely not me) wore this NYE Grin

AllBuggiedOut · 02/01/2011 12:17

bloss is that another Jillian? I am so bored with the shred and need somewhere else to go. Has to be super-short though...
