Cake - I wish I had some magic words that would help you with your food battles. I applaud your self awareness though and I can sense just how careful you are being with the DC so ensure they love & have a healthy attitude towards food.

bunnymother · 30/12/2010 13:22

Yes, exactly what Hells said, Cakey. Unfortunately my mother is not so aware, but luckily my siblings and I have come out relatively unscathed. Although my sister and I are quite afraid of being overweight Blush

Bonsoir · 30/12/2010 13:35

LTEC - years ago now, when I had a few problems with weight and eating, I read lots of self-help books on eating and the wisest book by far was by a very civilised and cultivated Italian who said, among other sensible things, that it was fine to eat cake instead of breakfast/lunch/dinner rather than as well as breakfast/lunch/dinner. And you know what, I now happily eat a croissant for breakfast almost every day Shock - because I know that I will eat a salad for lunch and meat and vegetables for supper. Or, if I eat müsli for breakfast, I sometimes go to Ladurée and have an éclair for lunch!

Calorie-wise, it is fine to do this, and nutrition wise it really isn't very important in the big scheme of things, providing the rest of your life is full of reasonably balanced meals.

God you ladies are good for the ego Grin !!

My jeans and Project D dress have already arrived! (super fast and free delivery) but I have not had chance to try them on as have been frenzied getting ready for New Year's Eve. (Taking a little break now as DH has taken the two youngest on a fun trip to Waitrose).

Right, following all the advice, today I am wearing; 7 for all Mankind Genevieve jeans, Long sleeved charcoal scoop neck tshirt, a grey leopard print cardie from Warehouse and two of my best buys this winter - this in grey and these which cost per wear have already earned their keep.

tracey - yes I am the happy owner of a raspberry Alexa which I love. You have given me good advice in the past - thanks!

Some really great advice regarding eating Bonsoir that is really interesting and something I will try to muse over in the new year. I've always struggled with my weight (Mum and sister are both size 6s) but am trying so hard to be positive about food now that I have daughters. I have always been very all or nothing but your approach sounds so much more sensible.

Right, houseguests should be here shortly and have 30 to feed tomorrow night - will try to join you all when I have recovered in the new year.

Happy New Year to you all x

pickledsiblings · 30/12/2010 14:28

LTEC, would love to see the P&J dress on you. Don't suppose you could put a pic on here, could you? I'm not on Facebook yet.

I'm not looking forward to going on any kind of diet, but gone are the days of being able to lose a few pounds by portion control. 'Tis more than just a few pounds that I would like to lose so I will need things to be a bit more regimented.

Thank you ladies for your kind words about IL troubles. DH said that he was proud of how I handled myself (Sad that I should have to) but in retrospect he wishes that both he and his parents had said more to SIL. It was a bit of a no win situation unless it somehow manages to 'help' SIL with her many issues. She is v. overweight and over the past couple of years has gone from size 20 to size 12 twice Shock. Quite how that makes her resentful of me though, I am not sure - no 5 foot 8 size 10 lovely here. More like 4 foot 10 size 12 Grin. Doesn't mean I can't still be interested in fashion though, just because I can't wear most of it GrinGrin.

LetThemEatCake · 30/12/2010 14:50

thanks all.

Bonsoir that is very wise advice indeed. Thank you.

pickled glad your dh was supportive - that's often the worst thing, when they side with their families, I think. So frustrating.

I will post P&J pic and take down later on today, you bought it didn't you?? or were you just thinking about it? Have lost count of those of us who have it!

esher what did you decide on sequin dress? Saw a lovely silver BMB one on m-w this morning, one left in your size - what do you think, shiny??

annoyed as warehouse dress that my sister & I bought has now been reduced from £70 to £45!!

also - since the topic of not buying anything for a year etc has been raised on the other thread, it's got me thinking that I might set myself a monthly budget next year. If I don't use it all once month, it could be carried over to the following. Would be good to be a bit more aware of ££ next year in advance of the big move.

On which note - how wise is this. Recently had the opportunity to buy, brand new, Joseph shearling at large disc bc of 'connected' friend. Wavered by declined as will not need when at home. Good, no?

But oh how my superficial little heart hurt for days after at the thought of it ...

FritziGreenEyes · 30/12/2010 14:54

hark Your Christmas outfit is wonderful!

Have collapsed on sofa again after work today. DH has taken DD to the library and as we have our babysitter booked for later I will have to think what to wear. Think it will be Janice for me too, cake Smile.

bonsoir Thanks for your wise post re eating. After many years of struggling with food issues I try to live by the rule that balance is the key. I succeed most of the time but sometimes find it still difficult and start denying myself food/feeling guilty for eating certain things. Most important for me though is to set good example for DD and she has a healthy attitude towards food as far as I can tell. I tell her she has lovely belly too bunny!

LetThemEatCake · 30/12/2010 14:55

wavered but declined.

ugh, I am rubbish.

Red dress pic is up.

traceybath · 30/12/2010 15:03

LTEC - omg - I dream of a joseph shearling coat - I'd have bitten your friend's hand-off so well done!

Am also thinking of monthly clothes budget - but how much is the question Grin

AllBuggiedOut · 30/12/2010 15:17

Oh how lovely to see everybody embracing the sales!

Just passing through as supposed to be tidying in readiness for arrival of parents tomorrow. But wanted to report back on NAP order. P&J red dress lovely fit, but the red is definitely more of a winter red than autumn so I think I probably should send it back - bloss any advice?! Can't decide about the colour of this either and it's not as fitted as I'd hoped so is probably going back. The Blochs are very cute but arrived with a jewel missing and I think I may need to go half a size down. And finally the much coveted skirt is gorgeous in length and colour, but not sure the elasticated waist does much for me. It needs to have tops tucked into it I think, and that makes me look a bit oddly-proportioned. All in all rather disappointing. Will have another try on later, but fear much of it will be going back Sad

pickledsiblings · 30/12/2010 15:22

Thanks LTEC. It really does look on you and very 'modelesque'. It would never look like that on me but it could still work.

I have a very nice/flattering dress that I bought from FC last year and I am so tempted to take it along to a tailor and get them to make it for me in a range of different colours/fabrics. Has anyone ever done this? Once had a suit made to measure and a fab raw silk dress but I'm not off to Bangkok any time soon Smile.

Fleecy · 30/12/2010 15:22

I have a monthly budget, as does DH.

It's up to us how we spend it so some months I go out more and buy less, other months if I'm not going out I'll spend more on clothes.

The only reason we don't share and have more give and take is that he saves his money up whereas I spend mine every single month Blush

hells am wearing my rats today too - first time this winter.

petit am now all confused because your hair also looks great bobbed. You must just be one of those annoyingly great hair people Grin

traceybath · 30/12/2010 15:43

LTEC - dyeing is a little risky if the fabric isn't 100% cotton, viscose or linen and if the thread is nylon which it generally is then that won't take.

So I had to colour in all the stitching on my viv dress with permanent marker in addition to dyeing the dress Hmm I am clearly certifiable.

Fleecy - you always sound so sorted and careful with money - I am going to be more organised this year financially as do have a tendency to fritter Blush

Have to DH's amusement taken delivery today of all next year's xmas wrapping paper as buy it in the white co sale.

Fleecy · 30/12/2010 15:55

LOL at your permanent marker. We did this once with black LA wallpaper to cover some shiny bits of paste that had come through the cracks. It worked so I'd bet it does the same with stitching.

Good idea on the wrapping paper. I always mean to do that and never remember so must get @rse in gear...

bunnymother · 30/12/2010 17:17

OWW - my local Warehouse has sold out of the embellished cuff dress - bummer as was hoping could source it for you. Off to Zara now...

notyummy · 30/12/2010 17:29

Afternoon all!

ABO - Have been drooling over your order. It all looks gorgeous - even if not all of it may be kept from what you have said.

Esher - Thanks for the Ratsalikes. I have been muling over whether I needed some Rats, but resisting given impending redundancy - however that price may tempt me!

Welcome Arewedancers! Interestingly, I would have said that I relied too much on carbs previously, but my short stint on the Dukan has 'reset' my need for carbs. I do eat them now, but in much reduced quantities and do not feel deprived at all.

Interesting stuff from you all ref the food/eating. I think my mum inadvertantly casued some of the issues I had when I was younger, so I am really careful around DD (or try to be.) It is hard, and I think one form of 'control' can be beaten ...and then subsituted with another. In my case, I now have a much more balanced approach to eating (i.e I cut out no food groups, but try and stick to Low GI principles mainly - with occasional treats.) HOWEVER - my control is now around exercise, so I feel pretty miserable if I cant fit in 5 sessions a week. Having said that, I am not pounding the pavement for hours at a time, as I just cant fit it in, so some of those 'sessions' are only 30 minutes on a crosstrainer when DD in bed. DH listened to a programme on R4 last week about how food issues are communicated from parents to children without being verbalised (basically it was saying that you can 'talk the talk' as much as you like, but unless you are following the positive words with modelling healthy eating as parents, then you are undoing much of the good work.) I suppose it makes perfect sense - children model a lot of behaviour that they see at home in the long term, so food will fall into that.

Re budget - like Fleecy, Dh and I have budgets. We put the same % of our earnings into the joint account and then everything else can be spent as wished, although we have a rough agreement that we both save some of it. We have some joint savings from the joint account, and then separate savings from our own income - plus I am doing lots of AVCs for my pension at the mo. I use Microsoft Money (as does DH), and then I can see what I have left after petrol/outgoings for clothes!!

All calm at the moment at NY towers. DH downstairs with DD making the Yule Log for the party tomorrow. DD had a playdate for 6 hours today!! DH and I went for a run and then he did some work whilst I pottered round the house and then had a long bath with a facemask and finished my book. Lovely! We then had lunch together whilst watching Upstairs Downstairs. V civilised.

More links ladies - am living through you until I get back to Nottingham and can book my personal shopping and look to spend the Jigsaw vouchers.

Oh, I wore my H and M stripey sweater dress yesterday, and it was the first time DH had seen it. Previously worn to work when he wasnt here. I asked his opinion and he said 'Well, tbh, I think it looks a bit like a rug. But, I don't know that much about fashion.' I was torn between Grin and Angry!

carciofi · 30/12/2010 17:41

NY, my dh says things like that too.

I also have a certain amount to spend each month and always blow it while DH buys a couple of CDs and that's it. This year I want to save more so I can go on a spree after the baby arrives. :) Which apparently will be on its due date as the midwife told me today I will be induced because of my advanced age!

Metallic shoes are a great idea, thanks. I stopped off in Westfield on the way home from my hospital appt and saw some lovely shoes in Russell and Bromley but non-sale so no rush.

I don't believe that über-control is the way to almost effortless slimline bodies - I do really, really believe in my heart of hearts that diets are a bad thing. The only way to remaining slim and healthy is to eat reasonably and nutritiously without depriving yourself of the the things you like. And you have to learn to know your own body - I know from experience that if I drink wine, I don't crave cakes/biscuits/sweet things. Cut out wine, and I start wanting chocolate. So there is, somewhere in my body, a need for a sugar fix. When I want to cut down on wine, I have found that a couple of large glasses of elderflower cordial diluted with sparkling mineral water in the early evening works very efficiently at cutting the sugar craving.

Bonsoir · 30/12/2010 18:20

Had to post separately for this: we are in mega shock as a friend of DP's was murdered in his apartment last night. Are awaiting more news.
