What eye make up do you wear every day?

I just wear mascara but went out last night and my lovely friend had all smoky dark eye shadow that looked great (I probably stared a bit too much Blush).

I'd love to know how to do that and what shades to get, friend is quite fair, same skin tone as me and it looked fab on her.

Do you wear the full works every day?

also depends on your eye colour and skintone - specs aside i hve dark brown eyes and hair and verge on the sallow side of pale - aubergine eyeliner tres excellent but navy makes me look like the living dead - same would depend on the base colour of your smokiness?

i am swinging between The Knowledge Of Makeup and knowing bugger all Blush

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/12/2010 20:17

For work I wear a neutral eyeshadow, smudged dark grey kohl or dark greyliquid eyeliner, black mascara (emphatically NOT lash building, I hate thick skanky Cher Lloyd lashes)

For weekend I wear just very winged black liquid eyeliner - but very 60s ish.

For evening glittery dark eyeshadow comes into play, and I like the smokey look.

Always groomed and plucked eyebrows, that makes more difference to how your eyes look I think.

Eyeliner and mascara

LillianGish · 15/12/2010 20:19

What does the urban Decay primer do? Should I get some?

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/12/2010 20:19

I have always adored make up. I agree the best thing is to buy cheap stuff and muck about with it.

Liquid eyeliner is the thing - I love using the stuff that comes in a little ink pot (Collection 2000 is a good cheap one). It takes about 6 months of looking like a raddled old lush before you perfect the perfect straight line sweep.

BelligerentYhoULE · 15/12/2010 20:20

Yes you should! It just makes your eyeshadow go on smoothly and helps it to last longer without creasing or fading. I must buy a new one as mine ran out ages ago.

whensitgunnahappen · 15/12/2010 20:22

Theres loads on you tube. I wear loads but I have to for my job, but I learnt most of it from you rube. Google make up tuition you tube. My favourite is stillglamorous on there. But there's loads of ages/skin tones and ability to pick from

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/12/2010 20:22

I have just found a brilliant new product.

Tesco Luminous Eyes. It is like a primer for the eyes - comes in a chapstick like tube. Is cooling on the eyes and is slighlty shimmery - is a good base for foundation.

And if you try smoky eyes you DO need to completely cover up any under eye shadows, I have purple shadows under my eyes, and if I don't cover them up any hint of smokey eye makes me look like like the Grange Hill 'just say no' music video. Don't be fooled by YSL Touche Eclat (it aint a concealer, it is a highligfher, and will give you a bizarre reverse panda effect)

RipMacWinkle · 15/12/2010 20:32

Can I ask then - What's your top tip for covering the aforementioned eye shadows GOML? I use Erase Paste but I'm not sure even that is cutting the mustard.

I'd love to wear more eyeshadow but have huge dark shadows so I generally look worse, not better.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/12/2010 20:52

Touche Velouté by By Terry (stocked at Space NK). £24 ish. Lasts for ages. It covers the dark shadows and lasts all day.

MayorNaze · 15/12/2010 21:01

i am now totally distracted by makeup how to clips on youtube - OMG!!

moondog · 15/12/2010 21:30

Bobbi Brown Eye brightener is best thing out.

RipMacWinkle · 15/12/2010 21:49

Cheers! I read about this recently on here (in fact, perhaps it was you singing it's praises then too?) so perhaps a wee trip to Princes Sq (Space NK) is in order.

I fear for my credit card in that place...

DH will curse you be delighted Grin

ClaireDeLoon · 16/12/2010 11:46

I've now got the afternoon free so I'm going to have a mooch around John Lewis and Space NK and see if anyone has time to show me what colours and how to apply. Then I can practice at home.

I like the way some of you have mentioned about what you wear for the day then just add extra colour for the evening so will ask them to aim for that sort of thing with the colours.

If you're pale and trying to do smokey eyes, don't load up on very dark colours, as you may just look like you've been punched.

What I do is some dark liquid liner, smokey grew liner smudged on top of that, and then some eyeshadow in this sort of colour smudged into the creases etc.

The trick is to go with less is more - add if you don't think it's dramatic enough (much less hassle then ladling it on, realising you look like a drag queen and then having to remove it all)

Abs I'm still watching this thread (thanks for starting it Claire)

What MAC colour is it you recommend, I can't get the link to work? I may be just being stupid though.

ruddynorah · 16/12/2010 12:08

Not much. I get my lashes tinted and permed. Daytime I use a cheap rimmel waterproof black eyeliner just on lower lid, not much just sorted of dot it on in between lashes and smudge it a bit.

For smokey eyes I just put a smudge if black eyeshadow on top lid, loads of liner and smudge it all in. I may add black sparkle Barry m if I fancy it. Best brand for shadows is sleek. High pigments cos it's designed for darker skin.

ClaireDeLoon · 16/12/2010 12:15

Is MAC a good place to start then? Someone else mentioned Bobbi Brown, so the make-up counter of either would be OK?

OP posts:
AbsofCroissant · 16/12/2010 12:34

It's called trax (about halfway down).

MAC is a good place to start, but can become an expensive habit. Maybe start with things like collection 2000 or Barry M, experiment, see what suits you, and then upgrade.

moondog · 16/12/2010 16:20

I think a lot to be said for having a professional do you over and show you what she is doing.
A session with a woman at the BB counter was invaluable for me. I then spent £££ but it is stuff i wear all the time and I feel confident using it all now.

ClaireDeLoon · 16/12/2010 22:34

I went to SpaceNK as needed new foundation (use Laura Mercier) and the Laura Mercier make-up specialist was in today so she did my eyes and was great. She did a daytime look out of a little palette they have out now if 4 colours for £20, plus used a gold metallic cream that is very subtle as a base. Then she explained in detailed how to layer it up for the evening.

She recommended browns and golds with my colouring and the palette is those colours.

She also had this amazing pencil. AMAZING PENCIL. Called Flawless Fix Pencil and you just swipe it over the lower eyelid rim and it takes away the tired looking redness I get, she did one eye and the difference was amazing. Sadly it was sold out at that store and the one near where I work :(

So I got an eyeshadow primer, the little palette and the gold cream.

'twas fun and I tried layering on the evening look when I got home and it looked nice.

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/12/2010 10:06

OOh I am going to Space NK now.

purplepeony · 17/12/2010 11:14

I wear eye pencil in a mid brown (Clinique), shadow is a pale grey shade with a touch of paler highlighter from Dior 5 colour palette, and lancome mascara. Every day.
