Help me choose some footwear to go with a dress please (Xmas party)

Its for a Xmas Party but dress code is vague -I know for a fact some people will be in their sparkliest party finery and some will be dressed down. I'm probably going to aim to be somewhere in the middle. I'm not a dress-up, pile on the slap and glam type of gal Wink

My dress is a black maxi dress similar to this which I'm going to dress up with a chunky silver necklace and a wide (low slung?)belt. I have a selection of belts I can choose from, both black and silver.

The problem is footwear. I don't do heels. My only footwear tends to be flat boots (Fly Mols etc ), flip-flops/sandals, converse etc. I think the only "shoes" I own are a pair of black ballet pumps and some brown suede wedge "interview shoes".

What would you wear? I don't mind buying some cheap going-out shoes but they all seem to be stupidly high. I like the look of some of them but just know I won't be able to walk in them.

Is there such a thing as a nice shoe with a lower heel? Is there another option I'm overlooking?

And what length do I wear the dress?

Some seem to be worn to the floor, others about 6-9 ins above - is it a case of anything goes?

Ooh hard. I prefer maxi dresses with flip flops but not at this time of year. Will have a look.

RolandButter · 07/12/2010 16:42

lol at drama teacher!

I like the Dune ones -they have an element of quirky that I quite like.

As I said earlier, I'm not really a dress-up glam type so the other ones linked to earlier are not really me.

Any cheaper versions anywhere do you reckon?

Those New Look things look cheap and nasty.

JustBeachy · 07/12/2010 17:05

What about silver low heel sandals I think the other options look much too clumpy...

Adair · 07/12/2010 17:09

Ha, was about to say ballet shoes would be fine...

I am a drama teacher Blush

Alouiseg · 07/12/2010 17:10

I'd go for a platform wedge with a maxi.

Alouiseg · 07/12/2010 17:13

like these

5GoldenFimbos · 07/12/2010 17:18

No no no to the silver sandals. Agree with Alouiseg.

noddyholder · 07/12/2010 17:22

Cage shoes are hideous and ballet pumps ok if you are v tall and slim otherwise agree they are teacher y.I would wear boots with that at a push otherwise I think it more day

chocoholic · 07/12/2010 17:51

How about these?

I have them in black and they are low enough to walk in but don't look like low heels.

NorbertDentressAngelOnTheTree · 07/12/2010 18:12

I think platform wedges are probably more 'me' and the way forward.

In an ideal world I'd wear the dress with my silver Birkies or Reef flip-flops but as it was -9 deg here earlier I think I might need something a bit more appropriate for the time of year Smile

I'm afraid the silver sandals remind me of the sort of things I would go for in a dressing up box when I was about 4yo Wink

I like these

FiveOrangePips · 07/12/2010 20:00

Possibly too casual but I think biker style looks good with maxi dresses here

FiveOrangePips · 07/12/2010 20:02

and I like these
