Brora - what was I thinking? What is your most recent fashion faux pas?

Stillconfounded · 25/11/2010 09:40

I bought their fingerless gloves ... imagining myself youthful and slim ... tramping through elysian fields ..

Who was I kidding? I'm the wrong side of 45, plump in the wrong places, and I look like a fishwife ...Blush

Can anyone over 40 wear this stuff successfully? Chunky knits can be so ageing ... And I didn't even think the quality that good considering the extortionate prices.

Pls cheer me up and tell me what you are sending back.

maybe it's just me Blush

I'm not sending anything back but I sort of agree about Brora and definitely about chunky knits except on the very svelte.
I make my own sweaters and accessories sometimes and use Brora as inspiration (a bit). But never chunky over size 10. Never.

traceybath · 25/11/2010 11:05

God I've got the brora cashmere wristwarmers (£15 in sale) and love them.

What chunky knits did you buy?

pagwatch · 25/11/2010 11:05

Just you. I have some and they look lovely. Friends asked for some for Xmas presents last year.

Plus my house is fucking freezing so there is the whole practicality thing

SuePurblybiltByElves · 25/11/2010 11:06

I like to see myself in a sweater dress. In my mind. When I actually do see myself in a sweater dress I feel like Wee Jimmy Kranky.

CheeseCheese · 25/11/2010 11:12

why are you all in such cold homes?

Unprune · 25/11/2010 11:16

Cold home? Because I live in a Victorian terrace, no longer with coal fires lit in every room. And can't afford round-the-clock heating and dh won't have double glazing .

traceybath · 25/11/2010 11:21

I'm in a cold home as its old, sash windows and we have lpg which currently costs us nearly £300 per month!

pagwatch · 25/11/2010 11:22

Because I am the only one here all day. Have you any idea how much it would cost to heat the house just for me?

CheeseCheese · 25/11/2010 11:24

brr
id move. or buy a new house

there is no wat id endure cold for the pleasure of looking at a sash winda

nuts

Unprune · 25/11/2010 11:28

And there's no way I'd live in a new build home, just so I could be a bit warmer in winter. Each to their own, eh?

Stillconfounded · 25/11/2010 11:34

Grin Pagwatch

That's the thing SuePurply the reality never seems to match the "vision" nowadays ... I guess it comes down to age and too many chocolate biscuits ...

Unprune I envy you your knitting skills ...

Traceybath I didn't succumb to the chunky knits (thankfully) because they were too pricey and the cashmere slim ones I find too hot (and pricey). I was just wondering if anyone over a certain age actually does wear Brora? I can't quite get the hang of who their core customer is meant to be.

They seem quite expensive for those in their twenties ...and too frumpy for those in their forties.

46 is a hellish age for buying clothes ...

If only I could get back to my former slimmer self; things would be a lot easier ...

Stillconfounded · 25/11/2010 11:36

My house is ancient and crumbling (and freezing) too.

That's the only good thing about a bit of extra bodily padding - it does help keep the gas bill down ...

traceybath · 25/11/2010 12:30

Want to buy a new house but there aren't many around Smile

And currently renting so can't do much about insulation etc which is frustrating.

MayorNaze · 25/11/2010 12:35

my latest faux pas was bright lippy

wearing lipstick is my new hobby

except i tend to forget that i already wear rather brightly coloured glasses

bright lipstick only works sans specs Blush

i already look like jenny eclair and su pollard were mixed together, the lipstick was pushing me into drag queen territory Blush Blush

but with contacts i am unimaginably chic - i am most intrigued by the idea or wrist warmers...Hmm

CheeseCheese · 25/11/2010 12:36

lol at mayo

hmmSleep · 25/11/2010 12:37

I bought this skirt, in all 3 colours! I've just had a baby and thought it would be nice and comfy, (in a stylish 20yr old student kind of way), it would seem not on a 35 yr old mother of 3. I'm blaming the hormones.

MayorNaze · 25/11/2010 12:42

skirts are tricky buggers

it is a source of great annoyance that my favourite skirt (purple, cord, warehouse, fairly short) looks casual, comfy and stylish with thick ribbed tights, yet worn with anything under 70 denier makes me look as if i charge by the hour Angry

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/11/2010 12:44

Are they good for driving in (the gloves that is, not hmm's skirts)?

I could do with something chic to wear when I have the top down. It was a little chilly this morning.

pagwatch · 25/11/2010 12:50

yes yes
You must be right. my house is shit. People often say to me 'God I just would hate to live there'..... And it being a bit parky in the winter in England is so unreasonable. Putting on a cardy and some gloves is an affront to humanity.
Screw the fossil fuels, fuck global warming, to hell with history and heritage. I shall get me to a Barrats home and ramp the heating up.
I am sure that is the way to go.

Jenai - yep. I drive in mine

Stillconfounded · 25/11/2010 12:53

Grin at Mayor and hmmsleep

jenai I think they are more "car boot sale" than "cabriolet" sadly

They are not even "Sarah Raven strolling down to my cutting garden to pick peony heads"... which is what I was hoping for ....sniff ...

Grin at Stillconfounded. Perhaps you need accessories? A wicker basket and a black lab?

pagwatch · 25/11/2010 12:56

Grin cheers..

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 25/11/2010 12:56

Good. I'll instruct drop hints to DP.

I grew up in a first floor (so verrrry high ceilings) Georgian flat, with (almost) full length sash windows (obv. no double glazing) and no central heating.

It was lovely. I miss it now I live in a relatively modern house. Modern houses are stuffy.
