polyhymnia · 11/11/2010 15:12

Though you can definitely be very tidy and very mumsy!

mathanxiety · 11/11/2010 15:31

Anything that says "I live in a time warp", like scrunchies. And anything that says "No sex please" (I think that's what the Radley bags are all about).

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 11/11/2010 16:06

I hate those clunky strappy shoes with the thick soles. They are known as 'healthy shoes' n this house and my sister and I had to leave the Landsend outlets with an attack of the giggles after happening upon a stand full of them.

A lady I was sitting next to last night was wearing a navy sweat shirt with embroidered flowers on and matching navy leisure slacks. That is beyond mumsy.

MimsyStarr · 11/11/2010 16:13

I am one small slip away from Mumsy most of the time (as per the nickname), however I saw someone the other day that had charged through Mumsy and come WAY out the other side............ she had a carabiner clip on her jeans loop and hanging from that was A POTTY.

A potty. Hanging from her jeans.

I had to rub my eyes.

TheNextMrsDepp · 11/11/2010 16:25

Grin Was it full?

aquavit · 11/11/2010 16:34

pmsl mimsy

aquavit · 11/11/2010 16:34

hmm, looking at my previous post, perhaps she was also given to that and that's why she had it?

MimsyStarr · 11/11/2010 16:41

Empty, thankfully.

The thing was, she had a not very full backpack on, so, if it was me, I would have had the potty in that. Surely.

I guess she probably wanted to have it close to hand...... like Quick Draw McGraw Grin

Cheryllou · 11/11/2010 17:39

I'm often sporting mumsy, but know it when I do, particularly as everyone else seems so much more glam.

Could I add Joules to the mix? Particularly rugby shirt. In fact any rugby shirts.

Housecoats, as worn by my mum. Still.

Big Margaret Thatcher handbag.

Unwashed hair.

Sparkley tops for Christmas.

Also I reckon riding boots, although I know these can be chic. I reckon biker boots a much better bet.

Any footwear by Next. Tops designed to look retro, which are clearly from Next. And are branded Next. In fact, all Next.

Cheryllou · 11/11/2010 17:39

Oh, and those ballet pumps from Clarkes with little kitten heels.

mychatnickname · 11/11/2010 18:06

There was a mum at ds' nursery who wore straight jeans circa 1991 with block heel shoes or boots circa 1991 along with a baggy fleece. And her hair didn't have any style. It was hideous.

Worse still was the woman who wore tracksuit bottoms with the same kind of circa 1991 block heel shoes above.

Criminal.

I hate Per Una with a passion. It is the epitomy of mumsy. I wonder if the M&S powers that be sat there and decided Classic Collection was for grannies, Per Una for mums and Limited Collection for non mums?

SatinandTat · 11/11/2010 18:14

What is a block heel shoe or boot? I have lived away for way too long and have a horrible feeling I may be wearing them.

TheNextMrsDepp · 11/11/2010 18:39

SatinandTat - to me, it's this sort of thing.

concretebrunette · 11/11/2010 19:03

for the clueless among us, please suggest warm and stylish alternatives to dreaded fleece. it's cold outside

dexter73 · 11/11/2010 19:06

I don't think fleeces are that warm. I have a wool coat like this but in dark brown.

magiclucille · 11/11/2010 19:07

Ha loving this thread. And very excited to discover I have strumpet hair (and it really is strumpetty, now I consider it, curly+highlights+long). Think you can be mumsy without being a mum - have a friend who has been rocking mumsy jumpers from next since we were at uni.

What about dropping off at school in sports gear? I go running sometimes after leaving DS and turn up in really bad old yoga pants, dirty trainers etc - know I look awful but am hoping is obv I am wearing for exercise not style.

pourmeanotherglass · 11/11/2010 19:09

what is a waterfall cardy?

concretebrunette · 11/11/2010 19:16

thanks dexter that coat is fabulous. perfect for out and about. what about something for around house? ground floor flat is drafty

Munzle · 11/11/2010 19:17

This makes me a bit depressed. Know it's supposed to be a bit of fun, but seriously... maybe some people have better things in life to think about than what their clothes say about them. 'Next' do clothes of a reasonable quality for an affordable price. Not everyone earns loads of money :(

TheNextMrsDepp · 11/11/2010 19:22

Munzle, it is a bit of fun, no-one is suggesting you have to splash out loads of cash to look good.

I personally buy loads from Next and have a serious charity shop habit (now there's a place where you have to be selective Grin).

dexter73 · 11/11/2010 19:25

In that case I would say a fleece would be perfect concretebrunette.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 11/11/2010 19:25

..ah but ebay makes everything possible!

a 'mumsy' get up as described here could actually be quite £££

I view Next as pricy for what it is, but then i am one of those people that can't bear to fork out money for basic items, then wonders why she has a wardrobe full of partywear and nothing to put on to walk the dog.

eg. Berghaus coat £100 fleece £20 M&S jeans £30 ill-fitting top £20 ankle boots £30...

= £200. You can buy a very nice outfit for £200. Or not.

I'm sure pretty much everyone has to be guilty of at least one of the crimes below anyway - i have 'healthy shoes'. the round fronts fit my wide feet.

magiclucille · 11/11/2010 19:55

I have a long black cardie like this www.jigsaw-online.com/fashion/1001072/J10037/BK000/womens/knitwear/cardigans/wool-drape-scarf-cardigan

Wore it all last winter, thinking looked great, then put it on the other day and now not so sure - mumsy? Also- guilty of hiding fat legs / bum underneath...

magiclucille · 11/11/2010 19:56

Oops didn't know how to do link - long black cardie like this

Fleecy · 11/11/2010 20:05

herb am on the wise and avid thread - my wardrobe is mainly eBay, including £12 American Vintage tops, £30 See by Chloe tux and so on. And lots of Zara/Mango/Top Shop and cashmere stuff bought on there too. 'Tis time consuming but so much fun when you win a bargain!

Who was it who mentioned chunky heeled loafers? I have recently bought some to wear like this and this - stylish rather than mumsy in my book. I think it's how you wear them - I have blouses worn with skinny jeans or tucked into mini skirts, again, not mumsy. But if I wore them with shapeless jeans and bad shoes I can see how they would be.
