DamselInDisgrace · 09/11/2010 20:04

God, my entire wardrobe is included in this thread and my haircut. Go mumsy me.

deliciousdevilwoman - you have pretty much entirely listed the wardrobe of your classic hipster east london type. Goes to show it's not what you're wearing, but how. (and who is wearing it)

deliciousdevilwoman · 09/11/2010 21:43

Dando-I take your point. I am not talking worn with an ironic twist. I am referring to boot cut cords, "mumsy" blouses bagged over-as opposed to fitted/sexy secretary shirts tucked into skinnies or pencil skirts, that kind of thing.

inkyfingers · 09/11/2010 22:00

Horrible sawn-off haircuts, in bleachy-blonde colour.
Any kind of fleece at all.
Have to agree Lands End is mostly horrible (except the bits I wear).
Too much weight. It seriously ages you over 40 (more flab to go south).
Ditsy florals

But not my problem as I stroke my new leopard-print Kipling bag... Wink

Soups · 09/11/2010 22:38

Why is speedo-type swimwear mumsy? What are you meant to wear if you actually want to swim? With many other swimming costumes you have to either stand there, or do that very slooow breast stroke. The head sticking out the water which allows the "swimmer" to maintain perfect make up. I would say that's very mumsy behaviour but quite frankly it's plain irritating. GET OUT MY WAY I'M TRYING TO SWIM Grin

Scuttlebutter · 09/11/2010 23:22

I've got loads of fleece from Lands End but also have three dogs - so it makes sense to wear them while walking. Am laughing at the idea of being "edgy" or urban while tramping through mud or picking up poo, especially at this time of the year, when I am bloody glad to be warm and dry.

I've also got cords and they are not mumsy at all.

Mumsy is - safe, pale pink nail varnish. Sensible short haircuts (not wild or choppy). Large handbags that don't work with the outfit you are wearing.

Anything beige. yes, I know it's back in this year as "camel" but is just so DULL.

animula · 09/11/2010 23:49

I still haven't recovered from the shock of finding myself reflected in a thread on "mummy uniform" (in S and B, on mn one day) -- faded jeans, converse, pink boyfriend cardi, white T-shirt, highlighted hair.

I read the thread, looked down, and it was me. It was sobering.

Perhaps there's a difference between "mumsy" and "mummy uniform"?

Though I suspect it's just a time thing. One generation's "mummy uniform"/revolt from "mumsiness" = the next generation's "mumsiness".

(Someone tell me this isn't true!)

mathanxiety · 10/11/2010 03:44

I have something like this for swimming, and I really get right in there and swim. I got tired of having my very sad and sagging boobs permanently lodged half way down my torso in one of these with no underwire or support of any kind.

YunoYurbubson · 10/11/2010 03:59

You know how some people are colour blind or face blind? I sometimes wonder if I am style blind. I have NO IDEA. But then I realise I am not actually style blind, because if I were I would be wearing nice comfy joggers and a poo coloured fleece, blissfully ignorant of my disasterous look. Instead I try. I really do try and look nice, and then I skip merrily onto Mumsnet in my knee length floral A-line skirt and discover than I have Got It Terribly Wrong again.

I have most of the errors in this thread.

I gaze in awe at my stylish friends like a kid with her nose pressed up against the sweet shop window.

higgle · 10/11/2010 08:02

I have the Keen sandals - they are for hill walking in hot countries and skipping through streams and athey go in the washing machine and look like new.... oops! (what a give away)

plainjanesuperbrain · 10/11/2010 10:25

I just bought this

It is all about how you wear it.

I am wearing chocolate short uggs, with straight blue jeans with studs round the pockets. Think slightly rock chiky, but no bling. Bling is tacky. Then I am wearing a dark grey marl vest with a black wide neck, loose fit, sweat shirt over the top. The sleaves are slightly long, and the cuffs are very long. Vest is just poking out. Teamed with black wide cashmere scraf and ray ban aviators when I leave the house. I think I look good. A utilitarian outfit, a mum outfit as it is practical and warm, but petite chic no?

plainjane I like the tunic, cute. The cardi...not feeling it so much, but then I have an unreasonable hatred for all things NEXT.

Soups · 10/11/2010 11:34

mathanxiety i certainly agree that cossies that reveal the bad bits and don't show up the good are never a good idea and certainly frumpy. I just couldn't quite figure out what it was about speedos, most of the 20 and 30 somethings in my swim fitness group look fab. I do have a speedo style, but being 40, it's lined and has subtle boob support, but I don't have big boob Smile

I'm with many of the others on this thread it's not usually specific items of clothing that are mumsy but how they're worn and if they suit you. At school pick up time I see mums wearing all sorts of styles and looking good. Then there's some who don't Grin I'm thinking of the legging clad groups, with their long boots. All fine but for goodness sake wear a longer top!!

muggglewump · 10/11/2010 12:08

The problem with the waterfall cardi is that Carol Jackson wears one permanently, and it puts me off ever owning such a garment.

Ormirian · 10/11/2010 12:11

Oh dear. I just bought some waterfall cardies and I love them. They are sleevless. Does that help?

Grin
muggglewump · 10/11/2010 12:13

Erm, yes, yes of course, you won't look like Carol Jackson at all

BEAUTlFUL · 10/11/2010 12:18

I love this thread. Smile I think gold earrings are Mumsy, if they're sort of a cluster of gold around a pearl.

BEAUTlFUL · 10/11/2010 12:18

I think the height of your boobs dramatically influences whether you look mumsy or not. I actually think it's all about that. Hoik, women, hoik!
