RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/11/2010 12:20

fleece anything

traceybath · 10/11/2010 12:25

LOL at mugglewump.

I think waterfall cardigans can drown people and make them look much bigger than they are but did wear one when pregnant and very handy for discreet breastfeeding.

muggglewump · 10/11/2010 13:16

They look like a toddler has been yanking on them, which adds to the Mumsy effect.
Never wear if accompanied by a toddler.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2010 14:32

Oh YES -- Hoiking is essential.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 14:33

hmm..

wraps without shape. Especially waterfall cardigans, but including ponchos and other forms of the cardigan without sleeves or a proper front fastening.

high-belted trousers or jeans as per that shocking link from Noddy

the white Stuff wrap dress, or the Per Una similar thing, with saggy boots.

Uggs are now officially Mumsy, as seemingly all the Mums i know wear them.

Ormirian · 10/11/2010 14:38

OK. My definition of mumsy.

Jeans that are too short.
Trainers with jeans (I don't include converse)
Ankle boots with little heels.
Short 'neat' hair cuts without any shape.
Fleeces for everyday wear not hiking, climbing etc
Flowery things.
Bags worn strapped across the chest.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 14:47

notes cross-body bag next to me, hides it<

problem is, some of these things are practicality issues - with small kiddies, a bag that leaves your hands free is a must - the corss-body bag makes life easier!

what about wearing trainers with a skirt?

muggglewump · 10/11/2010 14:48

Oh Orm, you are forgiven for the Mumsy waterfall cardis as you obviously know what Mumsy is, so you can't beGrin

Could I just add in anything that's supposed to hide your arse, but doesn't really.

I was just in the shop and saw a woman wearing a long jumper which made it clear it was to hide her arse, except it just kind of screamed, 'I'm hiding my big arse'.
Not a good look.

I avoid anything that hides my thighs for this reason. They are big in proportion to the rest of me, I need to flatter them, not tell people they are so big they need to be hidden.

I started another thread on s & b but thought I might get more luck on this one - have just ordered these (hopefully for half price) but am now having second thoughts - are they mumsy or even oapish?

Since ugg boots etc have become fashionable my boot radar has gone out the window.

I would not wear a waterfall cardi because it would look terrible on me.

I would like to wear shorts over tights though but of course am much too old to do that!!

Ormirian · 10/11/2010 14:53

Thankyou.

I am too tall to be mumsy. I tend towards the scarecrow look.

And if you are going for a bum-hiders need to be long enough too - a bum-hider that only reaches halfway down the buttocks is worse that useless (hint hint MIL!)

muggglewump · 10/11/2010 14:58

I'm more Munchkin/Oompa Loompa than Scarecrow I'm afraid! One chip more than I should have eaten and I'm as wide as I am tall.

No hiding anything unless it's well hidden and not hidden in an obvious manner.

Think child hiding behind the curtain where you can see the lump. Not hidden, but screams trying to hide if you get me?

That totally makes sense in my head.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 15:00

I was just in the shop and saw a woman wearing a long jumper which made it clear it was to hide her arse, except it just kind of screamed, 'I'm hiding my big arse'

..this is the problem with 'boyfriend' tyle cardis , or any cardi that goes in a straight line over your bum - it adds another layer of thickness, and if your bum is not in a straight line with the rest of you (from the front view) , but sticks out a good bit, it will roll up, and look clunky.

i am having hell finding a decent cardigan this year. no to waterfall, no to boyfriend...which leaves..Nada!

I imagine orm to be like an extra cool CJCregg.

Bonsoir · 10/11/2010 15:01

If you want to avoid mumsy but you have no clue about style and beauty, you need to go for one of the main current looks - Rock Chick (think Carine Roitfeld) or Boho (Isabel Marant), mostly. Bling (net-à-porter) is harder (more expensive) and Romantic is more personal and harder to buy off-the-shelf.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 15:03

sincity i think those are rather good actually - look warm, not entirely practical, but still comfortable. I think the cross-lacing looks rather funky.

but then, i am a mother, so maybe my 'mumsy' radar is warped too...

Ormirian · 10/11/2010 15:04

Yep. That's me!

Erm... who is CJCregg

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 15:04

googles the names Bonsoir mentions, as has not a scooby who they are

muggglewump · 10/11/2010 15:04

I have a few nice cardis, but they all came from kid's ranges and one is cropped so won't hide anything.
One is sort of flowing, but not waterfall. Three buttons at the top and then just skims, and the other two belted, but fit me really well.
I think that's probably the key to most clothes-the fit.

Ormirian · 10/11/2010 15:05

Just googled her. Well, yes could be. But she hasn't got the scarecrow look sorted I'm afraid.

EdgarAirbombPoe · 10/11/2010 15:05

CJCREGG

sincitylover · 10/11/2010 15:14

Thanks Edgar - I liked them - when they arrive I will obviously decide if I look like OAP in them.

On the subject of cardis I bought a bargain from my local market - it only cost £10

it's a sort of grey alpaca look - just above knee length with collar and three big buttons. My male friend said it was teddy like Hmm

Wear it generally with tunic/knitted short dress, leggings and smart knee boots or ankle boots (with heel)

vintage4 · 10/11/2010 16:04

just has to be fleeces for me i hate them.Yes i know they are warm and cozy but i hate them. Age any woman about 20 years .I would have agreed about the Bob until recently when i had to have my hair cutfrom over shoulder length. It is very liberting and easy to manage and much shinier than most styles i find

vintage4 · 10/11/2010 16:05

*liberating even

40deniertights · 10/11/2010 16:56

I am new on S and B but need to be here atm. Does everyone else lose their style then find it again and then lose again and so on? Feeling lost at the mo. Anyway, for years pre-dc, I swore I would not have a mum-cut. The short easy to keep layered cut. Also loafery shoes worn with socks is mumsy.

FishWidow · 10/11/2010 17:29

Have to agree about the fleece - especially if they have a hood.
