Lancome foundation, concealer, and a hundred and one other beauty questions

I've got around £100 in Adv card points to spend in Boots tomorrow Grin. Badly need a new foundation and have been thinking about trying Lancome. What's the verdict? Recently I've tried Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, Chanel Vitaluminiere, Guerlain??, Dior Forever and heaven knows what else. My all-time favourite was a Giorgio Armani foundation but I can't get it within a 150 mile radius. None of the above have been any more than okay for me ... maybe I'm just waaay too fussy Grin.

Also, concealers vs Touche Eclait ... what's the difference. I've got dark circles and am using Bobbi Browne concealer at the moment which is quite good. Touche E is just a highligher - right? It won't cover dark circles? Enlighten me please.

Somewhere recently I read that pink blusher = summer so turn to peach shades for winter - yeah or neah?

Finally, I'm all out of moisturiser. What brand should I go for? Am using Liz Earle but fancy a change (and to use the Boots points).

Infact, I'm all out of everything which doesn't happen very often so am looking forward to a good splurge tomorrow Grin

Thanks!

I can really recommend Lancome's Effacernes Concealer - good coverage, softening, and lasts all day.

Clarins foundations always leave my skin feeling sticky. Lancome foundations are all good, depending on what coverage you want, but my fave all rounder is Clinique Superbalanced.

polyhymnia · 05/11/2010 19:07

Ah, just had a quick look at the By Terry site (instead of doing my work) and see in fact she does 2 concealers:

  • Touche Expert - which is what I have and like and
  • Touche Veloutée, which is what Millie 1 linked to and the one on the Space NK site.

As far as I can make out, the Touche Veloutee gives a bit heavier coverage (and costs a bit more) - but I haven't tried that one, so don't know if it's much heavier.

Sorry to complicate - I haven't yet found one of her products I don't love!

happybubblebrain · 05/11/2010 19:09

By far the best foundation I've ever used is Mac face and body foundation, its really really good. Although you wouldn't be able to buy it with advantage points as they only sell it in Mac shops, I think.

Touche Eclait is pretty good. It does work on dark circles.

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 19:12

Poly two expert concealers on Space NK. Which do you use? Thanks!

oooh a thread after my own heart

i chop and change foundations all the time and have yet to reach nirvana

atm am using l'oreal one here and have had loads of compliments

also love clarins instant smooth -is so quick to put on and looks very very natural- atm mine is a bit pale and I may need to change colour

brimfull · 05/11/2010 19:14

lancome ideale is nice as welll
have some sitting in cupboard -can't remember why i am not using it

mamalovesmojitos · 05/11/2010 19:15

i must say that i really like double wear light. it is a lovely foundation, not very thick like the original double wear, but lasts all day. i don't need lots of coverage, and often go without foundation, but its lasting powers are great.

love dermalogica skincare but not sure if boots stocks the brand.

brimfull · 05/11/2010 19:19

i had trial teeny bottle of double wear and found it looks ok on very smooth skin if put on sparingly but as soon as any imperfection/wrinkle is covered it magnifies it
I looked older with it on

brimfull · 05/11/2010 19:20

should have cottoned on when the salesgirl said all the makeup counter girls wore it Hmm

Lurpak · 05/11/2010 19:26

Nothing to add but Envy

Oh, except - could you please pick me up some
Estee Lauder MagnaScopic mascara
YSL Touche Eclat
Lancome Photogenic Lumessence foundation
and
some vasaline
Please Grin

polyhymnia · 05/11/2010 19:29

Millie1 - touche expert as in my earlier post, which I think must have crossed with yours

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 20:20

Thanks Poly. Ggirl - I'll keep chopping & changing til I find perfection in a bottle Hmm ... think I'll be going for quite a while yet!

I have almost £50 worth of Boots points and plan on getting a combination of one or more of the following: Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra foundation, Clinique airbrush concealer, clinique invisible blend powder, Clinique even better skin tone corrector, No 7 (or ruby and millie) eyeshadow brush and foundation brush. I now also want to try the Lancome eyeshadows! Although i've heard that Estee Lauder double wear eyeshadow is good too.

I have just started using Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra and I love it. Can apply for light, medium or heavyish coverage. I use Clinique even better skin corrector underneath at the moment. I have tried many foundations and this is one of my favourites. Covers redness really well too. I have to thank Havingkittens on here for suggesting it!!

YSL touche eclat is one of those products that does not in any way deserve the hype it gets. It is completely crap.

I tried a sample of the Lancome concealer but did nothing for me. Apparently the Clinique airbrush one is good however - haven't tried but I'm going to test it out.

FWIW I always use peachy pink blushes (one of my faves is Clinique innocent peach) as I have redness in my cheeks and pink pink blush makes me ruddy.

coffeenut · 05/11/2010 20:27

By terry is ridiculously overpriced and I will not even try it on principle.

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 21:14

Wow Coffeenut, I'm impressed with your list!

I'm now thinking of trying Lancome, Laura Mercier and By Terry (I know Grin) foundations (obviously the latter two will not be avail in Boots) and choosing from them. What else? LM primer. Eyeshadow - BB, Lancome, LM. Mascara - always buy YSL as it does the job and doesn't flake or leave me with panda eyes. Concealer - sorry but going to try By T. And ... oh, moisturiser. Definitely a counter in Boots as having read back over my list I think I'm going to be spending more time in Space NK/House of Fraser than Boots.

Actually, I'm being over-confident in planning all that make-up shopping as I'll have 2 yr old DTs with me and, well, their lack of patience is legendary! Grin

polyhymnia · 05/11/2010 21:21

On the name question, Terry is Terry de Gunzburg who used to be Yves St Laurent's make-up guru and then set up on her own, initially in France. Glamorous Frenchwoman.

She gave me the best makeover (most natural but enhanced)I've ever had when she came to a local Space NK store a year or so ago.

Agree products are £££ but will persist in my addiction - though do use other brands too

FellatioNelson · 05/11/2010 22:25

I've got the EL double wear mascara and it's the best masacara I've ever had. I realise mascaras are very personal though - like bras, they won't be right for everyone.

Millie1 · 07/11/2010 13:22

Just want to say thanks for your advice everyone. I'm slightly Blush to say that although I did use the Boots points on Lancome skincare products, I ended up splurging big-time in Space NK Shock. Feeling very guilty now but I ended up with ... Laura Mercier Primer, LM cream eyeshadow, By Terry concealer (the lady recommended the Veloutee version), BT Foundation (the effect on my skin was just too amazing for me to walk away - hope to heavens others notice!!) and a BT mineral based light reflecting translucent powder (I've got to remind myself of all its wonderful properties cos when I looked at the receit afterwards, having picked myself up off the floor and dusted myself down when she told me the total, I discovered it was a whopping £38!!!!!!!!!! Yikes).

Anyway, once I'd recovered from the guilt trip and realised no new clothes, then it's okay as I'm happy with my haul and am lovingly stroking the boxes until such time as I finish the dregs of current foundation etc and can open them!

Thanks again. BTW, BT stuff is lush!

purplepeony · 07/11/2010 14:02

tell us more about the BT foundation- which one which colour?

Pinkflipflop · 07/11/2010 14:22

This is probably irrelevant now but if you love the Giorgio Armani foundation, do you know you can buy on-line from Selfridges?
Postage around £3.50 or so!

I love it - my must have product!!

PFF

Millie1 · 07/11/2010 14:58

Thanks FlipFlop - I had been getting it from Harvey Nicks but they were charging £6 to post to N Ireland which I thought was a bit extortionate so I stopped buying it. I didn't want to get it again unless I could try their new foundations and check colours. I loooooved their foundation. The BT is the closest I've come to achieving the same finish.

Purple - shall check colour later but it's this one. It's just such a lovely smooth finish - really looks so well. The lady thought my Dior found is too drying for my skin - hardly surprising as I'm so lazy about exfoliating!

OP posts:
purplepeony · 07/11/2010 15:14

Thanks.
I did the search for a new foundation a little while back and d ecided to stick with my Clinique Repair Wear but I know that even the palest shade is deeper than my own skin, and it does have a matte finish- so always on the look out for soemthing better. Problem I have is getting a really pale shade.

Millie1 · 07/11/2010 15:17

It's certainly light-reflecting, not a dewy finish which always feels too slick on my skin but def not matte. If you can get to Space NK and try it, you should Grin. I got her to take all my make-up off and start again as I wasn't going to spend that much on a foundation with a smudge on my jawline to check the colour! Got loads of samples too - inc a couple of sachets of a glyco-peel which I can't wait to try.

OP posts:
purplepeony · 07/11/2010 15:49

yes I will try it. I don't actually like a dewy finih which is why i didn't buy the Bobbi Brown- they felt too greasy.
