Lancome foundation, concealer, and a hundred and one other beauty questions

I've got around £100 in Adv card points to spend in Boots tomorrow Grin. Badly need a new foundation and have been thinking about trying Lancome. What's the verdict? Recently I've tried Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, Chanel Vitaluminiere, Guerlain??, Dior Forever and heaven knows what else. My all-time favourite was a Giorgio Armani foundation but I can't get it within a 150 mile radius. None of the above have been any more than okay for me ... maybe I'm just waaay too fussy Grin.

Also, concealers vs Touche Eclait ... what's the difference. I've got dark circles and am using Bobbi Browne concealer at the moment which is quite good. Touche E is just a highligher - right? It won't cover dark circles? Enlighten me please.

Somewhere recently I read that pink blusher = summer so turn to peach shades for winter - yeah or neah?

Finally, I'm all out of moisturiser. What brand should I go for? Am using Liz Earle but fancy a change (and to use the Boots points).

Infact, I'm all out of everything which doesn't happen very often so am looking forward to a good splurge tomorrow Grin

Thanks!

If you have a big boots and were me, I'd probably go for a foundation with either Lizzie Arden or Estee Lauder just so I could buy one of their big Christmas things they do!

You get a huge amount in these kits for about £50!

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 13:59

Ooh, hadn't thought of that Tefal - will look. Lancome caught my eye as they're advertising a new foundation - you know another one of those 'miracle' foundations which give you oh so perfect skin Grin!

I have used Lancome Photogenic Luminescence (or some daft name) and it was very good, the best foudnation I have tried apart from my usual By Terry extortionate one. very good colour.

Do you have pinky skin or yellow tone? Lancome do pinky colours. I wanted to try Vitalumiere Chanel, however all the colours are too yellowy. Is worth getting the make up counter women to put some on your face, to see.

Estee Lauder foundation no good, imo. Esp Double Wear. You may as well put tippex on your face.

Have never understood why people use Touche Eclat as a concealer, it is a highligher, it just highluights your dark circles imo. Touche velouté by By Terry is the best bar none, and is a proper concealer (designed by the same person who designed Touche Eclat, so is very similar however is fit for purpose). However you can only get By Terry studff in Space NK.

I agree you can get great big make up jkits for £30 when yoy buy 2 other products _ got a Estee Lauder one donkeys years ago and it was fanstastic.

I used to use Lancome maquimat, a million years ago when I wanted to be gothy and dead looking in my teen angst. Then I had another one whose name escapes me that wasn't very nice, very gloopy.

I agree with Getorf about EL- I also used to love Lucidity, but when I tried it again las year I was orange and glossy and looked a bit like David Cameron's orange lovechild.

My new and forever more fave is Clarins Instant Smooth. It's a moussey job, lovely to put on, very natural. They also do a polyfilla thing called Instant Smooth which truly really does make your lines disappear. (only temporarily mind, but t'is very good)

hellsbelles · 05/11/2010 14:16

100% agree with Geroff about touche eclait vs By Terry. I could never understand what the Touche eclait fuss was about until I tried the By Terry version.

I have tried the new lancome foundation... can't remember the exact name but it's something like 'teint miracle'! I really like it on my skin. It goes on like a tinted moisturiser but gives a better coverage. I have pretty good skin but I'm getting old so that's what I need - a bit of coverage and glow Grin. I have combination (but also dehydrated Hmm skin and I do have to use a little translucent powder with the lancome as well (I used Clinque loose powder...I've tried tons of others but find this the most natural).

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 14:20

Heard very good things re teite miracle.

Also, I think lancome do brilliant eyeshadows, really excellent pigemtation and they STAY ON (other eyeshadows seem to evaporate off my face).

at bucharest, you do make me laugh re orange david hameron lovechild images

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 14:21

Estee lauder is beloved of girls who work as recruitment consultants or travel agents (i.e. those who apply with bricklayers trowels)

moragbellingham · 05/11/2010 14:24

I got a sample of the Lancame Teint Miracle and am undecided about it.
It definitely has some luminescence and is way more pinky and has very pale shades if you need them.
I don't know why I'm not taken with it, prob cos my skin's in a s**t state at the mo.
IMO it's similar to YSL teinte radiance (v good)and they have pale shades too.

I wear pink blusher most of the year but it suits me.Clinique all over bloom is nice in summer - peachy colour]]

I want to try the Olay regenerist serum too but no one has mentioned it for a while/yet?

I like E Arden sheer light pens and tinted moisturiser too.

I LOVE Youth Code by L'Oreal and it's £10!

hellsbelles · 05/11/2010 14:28

meant to say on the blusher...I would definitely stick to what suits you. I haven't heard that rule before and stick to pink as I look horrid with peach.

Bucharest · 05/11/2010 14:29

Y'see, there's a political image for every situation.

I use a Clinique powder, gentle light loose, t'is lovely, very light reflecting.

The Clarins woman was funny when I sneaked over to her (slithering on my belly past the EL woman who had made Tango'd me the week before) She looked across at the EL woman and sucked her teeth and said "ooooh no, we don't do orange at Clarins".

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 14:32

lol at Clarins V Estee Lauder

Imaigine it's like celebrity deatnmatch in House of Fraser after hours.

I temped in a recruitment consultants once (for 5 minutes) - ALL the girls wore EL doublewear inches thick, Diorshow mascara (petrified spiders) and benefit Dallas bronzer.

Bless 'em.

purplepeony · 05/11/2010 14:35

Hi Millie!

I think it depends on your skin tones. I am really pale and find that some brands do not cater well for pale people. eg Chanel are all too deep.

I like Clinique but other people don't. it's a personal choice. I like their Repair Wear but some find it too thick- you need a tiny amount per check, moisturise well and blend.

years back I used Lancome maquisatin or something in a tube and loved it, but then I became alleric to perfumed products and Lancome is very perfumey.

I also used a Liz Arden one in a bottle that i liked at the time.

Bobbi Brown has a good shade range and I got samples but found they were too shiny and not enough coverage, but that is comparing to the Clinique I use.

I use their concealer (BB) and think it's great.

I use Clinique moisturiser either super defence, or youth surge, bith for dry skin.

Daily Mail did a femail feature on foundations a day or two back and it's online.

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 14:39

I am also very very pale albeit pink - Lancome probably the only mid range foundation that does a colour that suits. But yes very perfumed.

Chantecaille, Laura mercier, Chanel, Dior, all too yellow.

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 14:46

Oh thanks for all the replies. Yes, I know what everyone means about pink/yellow tones ... I ended up with Dior last time round as Channel/YSL etc just didn't have colours for me. When I got V'luminiere a few years ago, I looked like a ghost Grin. That said, I don't know if I'm pink or yellow - pale, definitely! Dark hair, brown eyes - guess would tend to go more towards yellow. Shall have to examine myself after school run! Will read properly later!

Thanks!

Millie- I know you are not buying at J Lewis but if you look at their online site it does give you 7 pages of foundations- go to Beauty and Face and Foundations- so you can look and compare easily.

I am yellow-toned. I use the palest shade in Clinique - Alabaster- adn the 2nd palest shade in B Brown- ivory or porcelain.

I use a peachy blusher. sadly, my fave of all time was one by Prescriptives in fawn, and now i am using a Clinique one in Peach ( powder compact) but can heartily recommend laura mercier blush as they have subtle pale colours and texture is better IMO than Clinique.

Millie1 · 05/11/2010 15:39

Thanks Purple ... I wear the same BB colour as you so our tones must be similar. I'll have a look at John Lewis now before I get the girls up.

I don't have to get the foundation in Boots - had thought about Laura Mercier founds also - didn't like what I tried first time around but she has a new foundation out which also looks like it's a bit heavier coverage and may be better. As far as I can remember, the colour was okay. I did get some LM blusher on the last time and it was a lovely pink but I've a nice BB creme pink blush and it suits fine.

Shall check out Lancome eyeshadows - thanks GOML - although, again LM do what looks like a nice cream eyeshadow.

Oh, and have read fab reviews of the By Terry under-eye thingymeboby ... I hate the Touche Eclait - I always feel the brush gets dirty even if you wash it regularly Hmm. Is the By Terry version really worth getting. Am trying to picture the closest Space NK ...

Shall check out Clinique moisturisers, any others?

OP posts:
Millie1 · 05/11/2010 15:47

Is this the By Terry concealer?

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 16:57

Yes, that's the one. Is the same/similar packaging as Touche Eclat.

I must say i have never thoguht about washing the brush

polyhymnia · 05/11/2010 18:28

The By Terry concealer is so good - as are most of her things! Obviously she had some sort of revelation when she developed it after she'd started with Touche Eclat because TE is nowhere near as good IMO and in fact makes me look worse - like a reverse panda IYSWIM.

FellatioNelson · 05/11/2010 18:34

Thanks for that tip about By TErry concealr Getorf and others - I'm having a bit of a problem with dark circles at the moment, and I've tried Touche Eclat on them but I agree, it just gives me luminescent dark circles.Confused

My DH works near a Space NK so I shall send him in. How much should I warn him his wallet will be dented by?

Have been wondering about that Caffeine dark circle roller stick I keep seeing advertised everywhere, but I've sort of dismissed it on account of being a bit too 'high street' and therefore probably crap.

I could just give up my life of debauchery, drink more water, and see if they subside of their own accord, but that seems beyond the call of duty TBH.

WillPenn · 05/11/2010 18:43

I just bought Lancome Teint Idole Ultra liquid foundation. I haven't used foundation for a while, as everything I've previously used (Clinique, Estee Lauder) brought me out in spots and made me look orange.

However, I'm very pleased with the Lancome - no spots after two weeks of use and a nice natural colour. I'm quite pale skinned.

polyhymnia · 05/11/2010 18:54

Fellatio - the By Terry concealer should be on the Space NK website so you can suitably prepare your DH.

FellatioNelson · 05/11/2010 18:59

Ooh thanks.

FellatioNelson · 05/11/2010 19:01

I'm not sure about the sound of the 'By Terry' brand though. It's got a 1980s party plan Avon sort of feel about it...

Can you assure me it's good? Of couse if Space NK sell it it will be good, but what a crap name.

Imisssleeping · 05/11/2010 19:06

It's £29
