I thought this initially, but we can't have people trying to murder our elected officials so have to give them maximum sentences.

Also, add into that the fact that there was a terrorist element to this and I think they have to come down really hard on her.

dexter73 · 04/11/2010 11:08

What was she wearing?

tiredemma · 04/11/2010 11:09

I think the terrorist element was a massive influence on the sentence.

lollipopshoes · 04/11/2010 11:10

dexter - just spent five minutes wondering why on earth that matters!

then I noticed what topic this is in Grin

Tootlesmummy · 04/11/2010 11:10

No it was absolutely the right thing to do. She tried to murder him, what would you suggest!?

pagwatch · 04/11/2010 11:13

Good grief really?

She was trying to kill him. And our elected representaive host clinics that people need to feel they can attend in rivate and easily. MPs clinics are one of the few things that continue to give me hope about our political system.

If any group or section of the community feel that MPs face to face meetings with their electorate are fair game, that whole system will be damaged.

Persoanlly I am a bit Shock that you can walk up to someone, stab them in an attempt to kill them and 15 years is considered steep. but I am used to that

vintage4 · 04/11/2010 11:13

Cicatrice · 04/11/2010 11:16

I don't think it was enough!

She was trying to kill him.

It was pre meditated.

She is not remorseful and does not recognise the court. And is a clear risk to do it again.

Granted other stabbings with intent don't get 15 years but I think that they should. And she should have got longer.

RiverOfSleep · 04/11/2010 11:16

A bit harsh? How do you describe trying to murder him? A teensy bit naughty?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 04/11/2010 11:18

I'm with Pag. And also bewildered about the topic choice.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/11/2010 11:24

Not steep. She fully intended to kill an MP. Thats not the Establishment's own; thats one of our own elected representatives.

The fact he survived should have no bearing on her sentence - I don't believe in time off for incompetence.

coatgate · 04/11/2010 11:27

Dexter - you made me spurt tea all over my laptop!

EldritchCleavage · 04/11/2010 11:32

Erm, she wanted to murder an MP to punish him for voting a particular way and in so doing frighten all other MPs away from supporting a particular policy. Rather strikes at the heart of our democracy, that one. So no, it's not a harsh sentence. You'd get about that for a bog standard unprovoked attempted murder on stranger in many cases.

thefirstmrsDeVeerie · 04/11/2010 11:32

She tried to kill a man.

She took two knives

She stabbed him in the stomach

She showed no remorse

She would do it again.

Why should she be given a light sentence?

Doesnt the above meet all the requirments for a maximum sentence?

She has not been found mentally ill and there are no other factors to be taken into account are there?

That 'part of the establishment' is somebody's son, partner and perhaps father.

FFS.

What a weird place to put this but at least it gave us all a laugh, nice one Dexter Grin

Rindercella · 04/11/2010 11:36

OP, why do you think 15 years to be too long for a woman who attempted to murder a man? Who showed no remorse at her murder attempt? Who showed no remorse at this man's injuries? Who does not recognise the courts in the UK?

And why the feck did you think Style & Beauty an appropriate topic in which to post this? Confused

GabbyLoggon · 04/11/2010 13:02

you can get 4 years for manslaughter with someone actually dead. I gather you lot do not study relative court sentences?

OP posts:
Cicatrice · 04/11/2010 13:28

And 4 years is far too short.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/11/2010 13:35

The difference with manslaughter is one of intent. This woman's intent was clear, she botched the murder.

Zondra · 04/11/2010 13:35

She deserves every one of those 15 years & more!

Op,what if this was your husband, brother, father, etc?

The lack of remorse shows that she still is a danger, too.

I am delighted that for once that a proper sentence has been passed.

GabbyLoggon · 04/11/2010 13:36

cica said that without knowing the circumstances of the case. Glad your not a judge or JP

OP posts:
dexter73 · 04/11/2010 13:37

But with manslaughter the intent to kill isn't there. This woman (not a girl) intended killing the man so if he had died it would have been murder not manslaughter. Do you study what crimes actually mean?

Rindercella · 04/11/2010 13:37

Um, isn't the difference between murder and manslaughter intent?

And what's with the 'you lot'? Hmm

dexter73 · 04/11/2010 13:37

I'm glad you're not a judge or JP as the streets would be even more full of criminals.

expatinscotland · 04/11/2010 13:39
