Are Tony and Guy rubbish?

I haven't been to one in years but I was always told they only learn two or three haircuts and inflict do them on everyone regardless of what they ask.

Am I too old at 40 to go to one?

I go to one and always see the same hairdresser who is good, does what I ask for, which is always the same, but I think I see lots of styles being done. I did see someone else once when she was sick tho who was shit.

MarshaBrady · 01/11/2010 20:56

Be careful they will feather and hack and layer.

Into a mullet type thing.

Or at least they did in 90s, may have improved!

(probably really was Tony but Toni looked better )

CaptainBarnacles · 01/11/2010 20:57

I think it depends on the branch/hairdresser. I go to T&G and have had great haircuts from 2 hairdressers - and my hair is very very far from the poker straight locks that the T&G cuts are designed for.

FWIW, I used to go to the Oxford branch and it was packed with very chic women in their 40s 50s and 60s having great haircuts.

Why not give it a whirl?

HeadFairy · 01/11/2010 21:00

Thanks, I'm a little alarmed at the idea of a mullet :o

I'm tempted to give it a try, we don't have many decent hairdressers where I live. I used to go to my mum's but they charge £50 a cut and I was never terribly impressed with them. I have no idea what I want or what suits me so I need some guidance from someone who won't try and make me look like so kind of freak.

What sort of prices do they charge in T&G?

If you wear glasses, be prepared for a fringe that will constantly fall into them.

MentalFloss · 01/11/2010 21:07

I used to but the prices got excessive IMO

I paid about £120 for a cut, full head colour and blow dry.

Then I realised that it really wasn't worth it - the stylists at my one were really sullen and moody and I didn't enjoy it anymore so I think it depends on the salon.

BikeRunScream · 01/11/2010 21:11

I went to them (Newcastle branch) once in about 1995 raring for a "I have just been dumped and I need to do soemthing" haircut.

They said "We don't do curly hair". (Think Minnie Driver on a really bad hair day).

Epsom and Leeds branches have been similarly snooty and they have never deigned to cut my curly hair.

KenDoddsDadsDogHatesFireworks · 01/11/2010 21:14

I have been going to the one in Sunderland for years now. Have never had a mullet thankfully and really happy with my stylist/ colourist.
However, my mam went to the same salon last week, had the head stylist and got a shitty inflicted hairdo.

HeadFairy · 01/11/2010 21:15

Huh RunBikeScream? they must be pretty confident of the company's finances to turn away business. Are they franchises?

No glasses but lenses....

Hmmmm mentalfloss - £120 for a colour cut and blow dry, that's what I used to pay in my old trendy SW London hairdressers (well a bit more, but not much)

I guess I just need to risk it and see... perhaps I'll just go for a cut, won't risk colour until I see what they're like.

I had an awful cut there. They were moody and rude and couldn't cope with my curly hair. I would not recommend them myself.

SecondToughestInTheInfants · 01/11/2010 21:32

Yes, they are rubbish. As far as I can see they steal my husband's money for doing absolutely nothing to his hair.

Awitch · 01/11/2010 21:32

yes

wildfig · 01/11/2010 21:37

by far the grumpiest salons I've ever been in, and the most keen to inflict whatever cut they feel like, rather than what you asked for. A lop-sided haircut is a lop-sided haircut.

ovumahead · 01/11/2010 21:44

I personally think they're overpriced, but it depends what you're after. If it's a bog standard haircut, just print off some photos or take a magazine with the hairstyle you want, most hairdressers find this really helpful and would know how to cut it, unless it's something really weird!

jonicomelately · 01/11/2010 21:49

They are franchised so quality will vary from place to place. Last time I went, the girl cutting my hair constantly looked at herself in the mirror and had to ask me three times which side I parted my hair Hmm I wouldn't recommend them.

polyhymnia · 02/11/2010 10:02

Agree with everyone else. The franchise means no predictable quality of cuts. Had a few cuts from them 10 years or so ago - none disastrous, but none specially good either.

I wouldn't bother unless you have a recommendation for a particular stylist from a friend whose hair you really like .

polyhymnia · 02/11/2010 10:03

Would personally also avoid other chains such as Headmasters and Hair Associates.

HowsTheSerenity · 02/11/2010 10:03

Yes they are.
Enough said.

Pinkjenny · 02/11/2010 10:04

Absolute garbage. Depends on the stylist, no matter what the chain is.

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/11/2010 10:04

I used to go there - was £135 for highlights and a cut. It was fine.

I now go down the road to a perfectly good hairdresser who charges me £60 for the same thing. Can't noptice the difference.

Only thing is in T&G they used to give me wine whilst having my haircut. Mind you, for saving £70 I can buy my own wine,

FetchezLaVache · 02/11/2010 10:08

I went a couple of times when I lived in Munich- always very good. So I started using my local branch when I moved back to UK, I had someone quite junior cut my hair a couple of times and she was always very good too. Then one day she was sick so I got the "Art Director", who cost a fortune and was rubbish, so I haven't been back. I think, to paraphrase Jane Austen, that getting a capable hairdresser at T&G is entirely a matter of chance.

mippy · 02/11/2010 11:51

My rule is - if you go for a bob, and they have to use straighteners on already very straight hair to get it to hang right, they are a rubbish hairdresser.

apple99 · 02/11/2010 11:56

I go to T&G but only because I have the same stylist each time, if she was to leave I would try somewhere else. Not because I think the salon is bad, just expensive!

notinmypocket · 02/11/2010 12:42

I have been to quite a few different branches and quite like them (including their sister company Essensuals).
I always stick to more or less the same hair cut though - long straight with varying lengths and degrees of layers depending on how brave I feel on a visit.

Never had a sulky or unfriendly hair dresser, all very friendly and ... what I value most ... they do not force conversation on you, they sense quite quickly if you're not up for idle chit chat and just want to relax in peace and quiet and get your hair cut.
