Boden - what's it all about?

Before I joined Mumsnet I never even had heard of Boden ( Grin or Blush, not sure which emotion is appropriate, a bit of both I guess...Smile)

I am wondering what the fascination with Boden is all about.
Have to admit I still have not looked at their site or catalogue but is it worth it?
Are they such great value for money or trendsetting or ... just the thing to do on Mumsnet?

Have a look and see what you think.

mistressploppy · 26/10/2010 09:38

It's just quite pricey middle class vaguely posh stuff, but they do LOADS of catalogues. It's your classic yummy-mummy garb.

Some of it's ok. Lots is pretty daft.

some of its quite nice, i find it too expensive for me though, dd has a snowsuit from there that was a present. what i like about the kids stuff is that its bright nicely cut and not too grown up. i often have a look in the catalogue but never get anything if i had the money i would though!

notinmypocket · 26/10/2010 09:46

Sorry Jajas - I don't check all all threads and was genuinely wondering if it's all MN hype or actually any good.
And just wanted some opinions of seasoned 'Bodeners' before I check it out

I am not a huge Boden fan for myself - the colours are often too bright for me and I don't do big patterns. However, I do like some of their basic knit wear and T-shirt tops for layering.

I am a big Mini Boden fan - the cothes are good quality, a little quirky and allow children to be dressed as children - I hate mini adult fashions.

I never pay full price for stuff though. I order on preview when there is 20% off and wait for other discount codes and offers.

once and for all its not only for bloody middle class yummy mummies .I am a working class 47 year old and i like loads of stuff from Boden especially the coats . I also buy from other companies too . I think if you only bought from Boden you would be a very dull person indeed and as for prices i have saw things in poxy shop like Peacocks(sorry just imo) just as expensive

notinmypocket · 26/10/2010 10:32

Thank you ladies, I think I will definitely have a look at their children's range.

It is such a mix - some ladies' basics (ie non fussy, non ridiculous patterned) can be good. I just happen to love their bootleg jeans, they fit me, and I buy them on offer and they are great.

Mini boden is fab, again ignore the bonkers stuff. But my two are hard on their clothes, and mostly boden stuff survives to be passed on/sold on ebay still in good nick.

GoreRenewed · 26/10/2010 10:38

Alfie!

kittya · 26/10/2010 10:40

Its not all middle class yummy mummies, it just likes to THINK it is. None of us pay full price for anything.

The womens basics are great. Ive had knitwear from there that is still going strong.

The shoes are over priced and never fit properly.

Their bags are great in the sale.

Its not going out clubbing gear but can be mixed in with more, err, fashionable clothes.

You cant fault the kiddies clothes, especially the old fashioned nighties and coats.

dizzydeee · 26/10/2010 10:54

can you find anything special for the DH's? also teenage DS's - something their friends aren't wearing

EmmyVonN · 26/10/2010 11:03

It's just an online shop, no big deal really.

I like the general style, particularly the dresses. They suit me and I generally receive loads of compliments when wearing Boden. Agree that some of the patterns can be alarming, but sometimes a dotty dress can be a nice thing.

Mnetters love to hate Boden. It's not really "in" to like Boden at the moment, though many still do. Boden-bashing is a favourite MN pastime. I think it's because it's seen as unfashionably middle-class.

They have fantastic customer service.

Euphemyknifeinyourback · 26/10/2010 11:03

I'm glad Boden seemed to have stopped the twee Q&A with the models, e.g.,
Dress £399; Model Tilly-Boo; Favourite Pastime Walking on the beach in the Maldives.
Bleargh.

I don't particularly like Boden adult clothes, and the things I do like are a bit too expensive.

I do love Mini Boden though. I actually get quite a bit of Mini Boden stuff on ebay

Meggles76 · 26/10/2010 11:35

I buy shirts for DH from Boden - again when the sale comes round Wink. They wash and wear so well.

cathers · 26/10/2010 11:44

I love mini boden as it is one of the few places you can get bright colourful boys clothes. Always use a code and then sell it on bay after for usually 50% of purchase price, so not bad value really

Womens wear is generally crazy. Weird patterns and bonkers with 'embellishments'. Good for basics though and fab service AND 3 month no quibble returns policy. Tred carefully

Two messages have been deleted? I can't for the life of me think what was in them?

Totally understand your question, OP.
This is why I love Mumsnet.

I too had never heard of Boden before joining. Had a glance at the website to see what the fuss was about and thought ye gods, the prices....

Everyone I know buys their children's clothes at Tesco, Asda and Matalan, with the odd bit from Next or M&S.

I come on MN because I like intelligent conversation and I hate text speak. Middle class yummy mummy, I ain't. All this 'oh it's good for basics'...you get get plain children's tops and trousers anywhere at all. £5 for 3 tops in Tesco? Brill. They don't last as long? Chuck 'em away and get some more...
