would really like one of those long down padded coats. have seen a Tommy Hilfger one but is around £200! Only want to spend up to £100, has anyone seen any about and about? I dont go into shops very much, more of an online shopaholic!

There's a thread I started somewhere below this. I've just ordered the chalet coat from Lands End - £110. Uniqlo have lovely, very light ones, for £79. North Face do the metropolis coat, but it's also £199. HTH.

mrspink27 · 20/10/2010 08:58

I second Lands End, I got one in the sale and it has been a life saver. You have to ignore all the erm "frumpy" stuff though! I really want a North Face one, but the Lands End is a good alternative.

CatBumMouth · 20/10/2010 14:11

am awaiting the lands end chevron one with furry hood £110 (don't tell DH!)

traceybath · 20/10/2010 15:50

aigle

I know its umm a little over-budget [hsmile] but it does look lovely.

Matsikula · 20/10/2010 19:47

Oasis do this one in black and purple which I am quite tempted by. Saw the black one today and it looks fairly good quality, whereas the Uniqlo ones I think look a bit cheap and flimsy (they are shiny, and I think the fake fur looks a bit drowned rat).

I am quite tempted by the aigle one too, but I'm really looking for navy blue. I dream of a Moncler coat - thank god they seem to be selling out everywhere as they cost about £600. J-Crew also have a nice one, but they don't shop to the UK, and they aren't stocking it on Net-a-porter.

House of Fraser also have some possibles, by Marc Somethingorother, but I can't decide whether or not they are frumpy. Also they are more quilted than down filled.

As you can see, I have done extensive research on this.

fullofbeanstoday · 20/10/2010 19:56

Some nice ones in Zara.

geordieminx · 20/10/2010 20:04

Zara

Meggles76 · 20/10/2010 20:08

Just received my Lands End Chevron down Coat with furry hood in Navy. Love it!
Wink at Catbum - i'm not telling DH either.
I am 5ft and a size 8 - 10. Ordered the petite XS and the fit is fine. I would say they come up generously so you might want to size down when ordering.

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 20:11

now i'd like one of these but I am large (and cold).

  1. would i look like a walking kigsize duvet?
  1. what are landsend sizes like?
Matsikula · 20/10/2010 20:14

The Zara ones are nice - but I think either black and longer, or thigh length with more choice of colours.

Dora you won't regret getting one, just get one with a belt.

Meggles76 · 20/10/2010 20:15

I think they are pretty generous. I would normally buy a 10 in a coat as I like a bit of room but the XS, which they claim is an 8, fits like a size 10 from other high street stores. Think they have a wide range of sizes and so petite and tall / plus ranges. They have a wide range of colours but I think the darker colours are probably more flattering on a larger frame. The navy is really nice and will go with alot

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 20:22

a belt Shock really? where's a belted one then?

follyfoot · 20/10/2010 20:26

Just got my Lands End lightweight Down Parka (chocolate). Wonderful.

Really warm, not at all bulky, and has an adjustable bit inside around the waist so its nice and fitted. Dora you definitely wont look duvet-like Grin

The one I got covers your bum, but isnt full length and its perfect for me.

Sizewise, I'm a 14, and the medium fits very comfortably with a tunic and tshirt underneath, have got broad shoulders otherwise I think a small might have been OK.

My last Lands End down jacket is still OK after about 8 or 9 years, washes and tumble dries brilliantly. Cant ask for more really. Looking at the latest catalogue, I wouldnt buy much else from them though!!

Matsikula · 20/10/2010 20:30

The Zara and Oasis ones have belts. Guess it depends how smart you want it to be. I want mine for chucking over my work clothes.

Esprit also do some good ones, with a handy star rating system to show you how warm the coats are.

I've really got to take the plunge after all this research, haven't I?

chickenlickin · 20/10/2010 21:07

OOOh North Face do a nice one, metropolis parka... decisions!!!

kylesmybaby · 21/10/2010 10:25

can someone please please do a link to the padded ones with a belt. have seen couple of people with them and think they are more flattering. im only 5ft so hoping it might look a bit better. many thanks

DinahRod · 21/10/2010 11:06

Be careful, I have a brown one and look like caterpillar pupa

Bonsoir · 21/10/2010 11:07

Benetton is a good source of cheap and quite nicely cut ones.

SixtyFootGhooool · 21/10/2010 11:10

I got one from Uniqlo last year, best £80 I ever spent

SixtyFootGhooool · 21/10/2010 11:12

Here's a belted one

orangina · 21/10/2010 11:18

I have a lovely north face one that I bought last year which is GREAT. Wearing it this year already (brrrr). A bit £££ though, but worth it...

SandyChick · 21/10/2010 11:24

MEGGLES76- how long is the chevron coat on you? I'm 5ft 2.

I like the north face ones but they are just too long for me. I looked ridiculous when I tried one on.

orangina · 21/10/2010 11:27

My NF one is mid thigh length. Will try to find link (think they still do it). Waisted so quite flattering (considering it is a bit of a michelin look.....)

orangina · 21/10/2010 11:28

here

karyncake · 21/10/2010 11:32

I have the North face triple C coat. It is really warm but I do get endless sleeping bag comments.
Bought it when I lived in NY, was essential for all the blizzards but here it feels a bit excessive so might try out the metropolis one.
