It's lovely

It's a dry cleaning nightmare

Kids and sticky fingers would ruin it

But shall I buy it (say YYYEEEEESSS):

oh god, it's horrid!

Amanderrr · 17/10/2010 23:53

Sorry but not keen. I think the lack of buttons makes it look a little like a dressing gown. I much prefer this one from Kew.

I do like the colour though and have three white/cream coats myself and haven't had to have them dry cleaned as often as I thought I might.

hanette · 17/10/2010 23:54

ha ha ha you may be helping my budget....do you think it's a bit cruella de ville?

OP posts:
hanette · 17/10/2010 23:55

Amanderrrrr I do like the Kew one. But the buttons remind me of cake decorations, you know those silver balls?

Hanette, I have a question for you: do you really, really love that coat or have you fallen in love with the life it represents for you? ie. Do you love it because it is a dry cleaning nightmare and sticky fingers will ruin it?

I ask because dry cleaning nightmares can be just that.

A while ago I bought a lovely, delicate little velvet thing. I owned it for two days, and wore it, lovingly and with joy, around my bedroom.

And then I realised we had to part.

I laid it on the bed, and said to it: "I'm sorry. I can't give you the life you deserve. We must part. Don't worry, you're beautiful, and you will end up with the person who can show you the life you should have."

And then I took it back to and bought a v. sensible, very useful, black coat instead. Admittedly, a velvet, "occasion" coat. But "sensible", and "classic".

So. what do you need this coat to do? Can it realistically do those things? Can you afford a flighty little white coat?

If the answer to those questions still points you towards this coat, joyfully buy it. If not ... sigh about it, and then forget it.

Amanderrr · 18/10/2010 00:02

Hmm, they just look like buttons to me but anything evenly mildly related to cake must be a good thing, yes?

Grin
animula · 18/10/2010 00:03

I like the Kew one. You could change the buttons.

hanette · 18/10/2010 00:07

Actually you are right. The Kew one would be a daily reminder of occasion cake which would be a good thing.

Aminula - you have hit the nail on the head. It's not just the coat I like(d) - it what it represents. It's not a coat that mums with dry cleaning bills and sticky fingers care about. It's a freedom coat and I am actually a mum with sticky fingers and a limited dry cleaning budget!

Sad to face the truth in life. Should I buy somehting more practical? :-(

OP posts:
animula · 18/10/2010 00:13

Oh no. i am now the "dream-treader" (ie. from the Yeats poem, where he urges the woman to "tread softly, for you tread upon my dreams"). Sad

That is an awful thing to do to someone.

Well, you probably should buy something practical. But, I don't know. Everyone needs to know that freedom is still there, glimmering just beyond bath and bed-time. On the other hand, I know from my own bitter experience that such things can turn into a sad reminder of the day-to-day reality.

Mind you, the stage of sticky fingers really doesn't last long.

Compromise coat? Gorgeous coat, that you know won't see sunlight so often?

I'm feeling unutterably guilty now.

Amanderrr · 18/10/2010 00:13

But you need more than one coat!

Now that it's getting colder your coat will be seen more than your clothes so it makes sense to have more than one or you'll look the same every day.

Treat yourself to a white one and a more practical one too.

hanette · 18/10/2010 00:14

I do know, in my heart of hearts that you are right.

Do you think though, that is has 'russian prostitues' vibes to it?

OP posts:
Amanderrr · 18/10/2010 00:20

I don't know about "Russian prostitute" but I wouldn't be surprised to see it accompanied by bleached bouffant hair and pointy toed Karen Millen boots.

threetimespink · 18/10/2010 00:36

naff

traceybath · 18/10/2010 07:49

Loving this thread Grin

They use that coat in their advertising photos and it does look lovely.

Perhaps in a few years when you're not surrounded by small children.

nikki1978 · 18/10/2010 08:04

Not keen on it myself but I bought a white coat last year which was expensive and beautiful. It was my going out coat and was not allowed near children! This worked quite well but obviously you have to be able to afford a sensible during the week coat too :)

Sadly mine has gone to the wardrobe in the sky as I was stupid and managed to get a fag burn in the back of it one night (sometimes adults are more of a liability than children!) Grin

Maryqueenofchocs · 18/10/2010 08:07

hanette it's gorgeous, don't be put off, buy it. I have 3 smart coats and wear different ones to different things. I am cautious around children in my best one, but fgs it's only a coat!

You'll regret it.Grin

AngryPixie · 18/10/2010 09:18

I think it's hideous and sticky fingers could only improve upon it Grin

Frrrrightattendant · 18/10/2010 09:23

Sorry, but on that model it's just wrong.

I really suspect on anyone it would be wrong tbh Sad

I hope you find something else.

Bonsoir · 18/10/2010 09:24

I think the coat in the OP would be perfect in a pantomime of the Snow Queen.

canyou · 18/10/2010 10:50

I had a similar coat in white [a little shorter as I am not tall]
I stayed white until I

  • put on a seatbelt
  • Sat in to a taxi
  • hugged a friend who wears fake tan and inches of make up
  • Got it dry cleaned, it became a cream colour Sad and the fluffy bit was matted
  • It never bloody stayed closed Angry Sorry OP your dream coat is out there but that is not it Sad
Lizzylou · 18/10/2010 10:55

It looks to me like a coat that you'd wear to meet your illicit lover with nothing else on except for stockings/suspenders, stilletoes and a (rouge lipped) smile, so yes, very Russian Prostitute Grin

I kind of want it now Wink

canyou · 18/10/2010 11:03

Lizzy my DP bought me that coat, your theory never occurred to me
wanders off wondering how hopefull did he get when I wore it

Lizzylou · 18/10/2010 11:11

YOu are missing a trick, canyou Grin

Waedigirl · 18/10/2010 11:21

Why not get a fantasy handbag instead? I have a palest grey yummy yummy Gucci bought (on principle) with my bonus while on mat leave. It's not been out of the bag yet, but I know it's there and one day I will be using it, floating around some occasion (and back in a size 12.) PLus of course it can be passed down to DD (in about 30 years lol)
