I got Lulu Guinness ones last time and like them very much.

phipps · 15/10/2010 20:27

I meant more about how to choose the style. I don't want designer ones. I only break them.

How short/longsighted are you?
If you need thicker lenses I'd avoid frameless or metal ones and go for plastic. If your lenses are quite thin, you've a lot more choice.
I'm really shortsighted and usually wear lenses, but have glasses too - I've got some with a black and dark green frame from D&A which I like a lot.

phipps · 15/10/2010 20:32

I have no idea but the lenses I have are thin ones.

where are you going? I like the things in Specsavers where you can take a photograph of yourself in 4 different frames and then compare. They always seem to have loads of staff available too, who havent advised me badly so far.

I would say for comfort, dont skimp on things like side hinges, padded nose bits etc. and be wary of chunky frames if they distract you when wearing them. Bright colours can look good, but not when they clash with a different shade top, or show their age 12 months later.

phipps · 15/10/2010 20:35

Boots. They have the photo thing too. I have just broken off the nose bit and it bloody hurts to wear them atm.

Def take a friend if you can to advise!

I recently got new frames as I needed a new prescription, loved my old plastic ones but thought they might be out fashion by the time I replace my lenses again (v expensive prescription) so got metal ones this time. Really miss my old ones

Sorry that's not much help really

smokinpumpkins · 15/10/2010 20:37

is there anyone who's opinions you trust enough to take with you?

my mum always takes me with her to her appointments, I take that to mean I must have good taste Grin

smokinpumpkins · 15/10/2010 20:39

Test weight as well. I have had some glasses which are so heavy that by the end of the day they make my head ache. My current ones are only £89 from Specsavers, but extremely comfy (had them nearly 2 years) and very lightweight.

phipps · 15/10/2010 20:47

I would take my husband but that means taking the kids.

smokinpumpkins · 15/10/2010 20:49

can you text him photos as you are trying them on?

VegasVicky · 15/10/2010 20:49

Specsavers have a camera and screen so you can see what you look like in each pair. I think you can even compare several photos on the same page - so you can see which pair suits you best :)

phipps · 15/10/2010 20:51

Good idea smokin. You really are Grin.

OP posts:
smokinpumpkins · 15/10/2010 20:56

have a look yourself, pick your favourite 3 or 4 and then text him a picture of yourself wearing them. Make sure you try them on with your hair up and down if you wear it both ways. and dont be afraid to ask others opinions in the glasses section - the workers enjoy the chat and helping and others often wear glasses themselves so are happy to help Grin

JaynieB · 15/10/2010 22:12

Try on loads - whittle it down to a handful you like and keep trying them.
Good tip about avoiding really bright/fashionable ones unless you have a few pairs at home to wear.
I found the staff were really good at suggesting the sorts of styles that would suit me.

PastaDiva · 15/10/2010 22:38

I would suggest looking through the websites of the opticians too.

I did this last time I got new glasses (this summer) and it really helped me to focus when it came to trying on as I'd already made a list of frames which were the right colour, shape etc.

But then I already knew my list of criteria as I have a small face and pale skin so plastic/dark/large/statement frames are all a no-no!

phipps · 16/10/2010 08:07

I asked for help last time in choosing but the assistant was very young and didn't seem to want too. I was left on my own and I have never been sure that these suit me. Anyhow they are broken and my prescription has changed slightly so I will get new ones.

Ooh pasta, can you advisee, as in also haveasmall face and light colouring?I am a glasses novice as i've just started wearing them for reading.

So far the best options seem to be semi rimless

phipps · 16/10/2010 12:29

I have got new glasses and prescription sunglasses too and the man helping me was really lovely and very helpful. I have to wait for them now but are really pleased with them.

KristinaM · 16/10/2010 12:37

Link please?

Glad it went so well

phipps · 16/10/2010 12:50

I can't find them on the site at the moment.

OP posts:
WhatsWrongWithYou · 16/10/2010 12:57

I'm afraid I'm a stroppy mare and if I'm not getting any help I walk out. New glasses for me usually involve several treks around every optician's in town, taking photos, sometimes dragging DH along.

Then when I go in to pick them up I hate them and invariably see a 'just in' pair which I love.

I think I just don't like the way I look anyway, and the struggle to find flattering flames just reminds me of my inadequacies Sad.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 16/10/2010 12:58

Best of luck finding yours, though Smile.

phipps · 16/10/2010 13:09

Sad though I understand. I am pretty ugly so nothing looks good on me but I am happy with the ones I have chosen.
