Do you think a more expensive haircut is better?

I don't mind paying more for highlights (at Aveda). As do think that makes a difference.

Do you notice a difference if you spend more for haircut? Ie covent garden aveda v less expensive.

Any hairdressers too, wdyt?

Bonsoir, as there are quite a few Dessange salons in Paris, may I ask which one you go to and name of stylist, if that's OK? I'm often in Paris and used to go to Moisant (Rue de Seine) but eventually my favoured cutter there moved on - not sure whether salon itself is not what it was.

My hair is also almost straight and tends to limpmness as it's fine - and I keep it pretty short.

MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 11:31

Do you have layers Poly? What type of thing do you ask for?

OP posts:
animula · 16/10/2010 11:39

I'm not Poly, but I have fine hair (and there's not much of it). I have a (severely) modified version of Natascha McElhone's hair (!). Without the fringe-y bit (not enough to do the fringe). So, layers basically, starting at my cheek-bones.

(Is any of that that of any use to you?)

animula · 16/10/2010 11:40

this one

MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 11:42

Ah yes googles. Long? Sadly I couldn't do that. Nice though Smile

Would love to know what fine-haired people ask for. Bonsoir what do you do?

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 11:44

Just saw pic. That is very nice. Sadly I don't have enough hair.

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 11:45

(sorry I know you keep it short. But ask for layers or blunt etc)

bigkidsmademe · 16/10/2010 11:51

I think it depends on your hair. My dad has an afro and my mum limp Irish hair so I have ended up with a mane of uncontrollable, but extremely fine, curls. I never used to spend mcuh but finding a hairdresser who knows what to do with curly hair means I will happily pay £100 now. Otherwise I just look crazy or completely scruffy all the time!

MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 11:52

Do you go to a well-known place bigkids?

OP posts:
polyhymnia · 16/10/2010 11:59

Sorry to nag neurotically but v interested in this thread and tips I can pick up from it as I'm gatting seriously anxious/ desperate about what to do when my current hairdresser retires at Christmas.

Animula, if you do still go to Worthingtons can you recommend a cutter ? Don't mind about price.

Bonsoir, ditto for Dessange, please.

By the way, don't intend to shuttle between the two, but to find one and stay faithful, which I much prefer.

I have layers and always have because hair fine.

Bonsoir · 16/10/2010 12:01

I go to Dessange International, which is the Dessange salon, and it is on Avenue Franklin-Roosevelt, just near the Rond-Point des Champs-Elysées (and convenient for Avenue Montaigne Blush Wink).

I am in love with Dany at the moment!

animula · 16/10/2010 12:03

Have PM-ed you, Polyhymnia (though with bad news Sad.)

polyhymnia · 16/10/2010 12:34

Many thanks, Bonsoir. Thought it must be that one - it always looks very imposing and, now I think, did get a great blowdry there once long ago.

Thanks for the PM, Animula - intrigued by what the bad news is. Have never used PM on MN before, and my inbox currently saying no mail, but will check again later.

bigkidsmademe · 16/10/2010 12:42

MarshaBrady no I go to a place in Notting Hill that a fellow curlygirl recommended. I think if you are curly you need a curly hairdresser or it is hopeless!

GhastlyandUgly · 16/10/2010 13:12

I need to find someone too. Would like someone close to Wandsworth as I can never be bothered trekking into town.

I used to go to a girl at Headmasters until she made me look like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.tvscoop.tv/carole-malone.jpg&imgrefurl=www.tvscoop.tv/2007/06/tv_review_guilt.html&h=387&w=326&sz=36&tbnid=JTeMfVIABFf-HM:&tbnh=123&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcarole%2Bmalone&zoom=1&q=carole+malone&hl=en-GB&usg=__Wkur_66a5nY2NAu5rF_Ox-dnItE=&sa=X&ei=Vpa5TKLkM9m5jAfkvo3cDg&ved=0CCUQ9QEwAQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this right before my wedding.

I too would like someone to tell me what to do with it as I have no idea.

polyhymnia · 16/10/2010 14:26

Animula - still no sign of anything in my inbox. Perhaps you could try to re-send if you have time.

But anyway, re-reading your original post again I see you recommend someone in Clapham area, so am assuming there's noone particular currently at Worthington you'd recommend for cutting.

animula · 16/10/2010 14:34

Did that work?

teenyweenytadpole · 16/10/2010 14:35

I have been to all sorts of hairdressers including fancy London ones in my younger (and richer) days and no I don't think that more ££££ necessarily equals good haircut. I have just paid £10 to the lady down the road and she has given me the best haircut I'v had in years, because she actually LISTENED to what I wanted instead of spending the whole time yammering on about her boyfriend, nights out, yadda yadda yadda. I have been to "upmarket" hairdressers before now and come home and cried because it was so bad! I think it's important to shop around and find someone you personally click with rather than necessarily going to the most expensive salon, stylist, or whatever. The best hairdresser I ever had was a beautiful gay Malaysian man - he never said a WORD but always cut my hair beautifully.

LillianGish · 16/10/2010 14:39

Paying a lot of money guarantees nothing. You can go to a pricey salon and end up with an inexperienced stylist or someone who just doesn't understand what you want. At the moment I've got a fantastic stylist (well she's the salon owner actually) who charges £18 for a cut and £55 for cut and highlights. So cheap I can go every four weeks - I have a short style which needs maintenance - and I'd much rather do that than have to save up to three times a year! I agree with a Bonsoir that a good haircut is one of the most essential beauty investments you can make, but I don't think paying an arm and a leg guarantees anything more than glamorous surroundings.

polyhymnia · 16/10/2010 14:55

Thanks, animula. Worked fine.

MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 19:48

Geez Ghastly you poor thing! re hair that is.

I do think suburban hairdressers should be treated with caution.

The worse cut I had was as a student and a hairdresser dangled the words free cut and model for salon pictures in same sentence. It was very bad!

Today I had the colour done and am immensely happy with it. Subtle, blonde, pale. Loved it so much I cancelled the cut.

And now, having recovered from being asked by my style hero on mn, I am saving up for Paris with Bonsoir Smile.

littledolly · 16/10/2010 21:32

I've honestly lost count of the amount of times that strangers have asked me who cuts my hair because it's so nice. I pay £24 (although I think they might just have put it up to £26 Shock) for a wash, cut and blow dry. Been going to the same girl for years and she now knows me (in terms of my lifestyle, what I can manage with my hair, etc as well as what I like) and I think that is so important.

brimfull · 16/10/2010 22:42

I always get compliments about my haircut, I don't think it's the hairdresser but finding the right cut for your hair/facetype.
It has taken me years of crap hairstyles to finally realise what suits me.
I have analysed what suits me ie, length around face, choppy fringe, able to put behind ears , layers that give it body.
Hairdressers can only do so many different cuts and I think you have to be quite specific about what you want and what styling you are willing to do on a daily basis.

MarshaBrady · 16/10/2010 22:48

Yes there aren't really loads of styles for the one person.

Loads of different types of hair but we generally work within our own limitations.

So mine is fine and lots of it and can't be too long. Or too short.

Not too many layers but not blunt.

No fringe.

So a fairly small window there then!
