"Investment" bag

I'm sure you'll be able to help me ladies.

I'd like to spend a bit on a bag, a really, really nice bag to take out and about during the day when I dont need 10 tonnes of kid stuff which is a little more often these days.

I've looked at Mulberry but if I'm honest whilst their leathers are lovely, I'm a bit miffed that some are not even lined properly etc - for that kind of money, I think they do actually lack something in craftmanship.

I dont want anything to flashy or bling (some of the Vuitton and Gucci type bags are a little full-on for me) but I've got that kind of money to spend on the right bag - £600-900 I suppose, though it would have to be perfect for that money...

If you had that kind of money to spend on a really nice bag and Mulberry didn't exist, where would you be looking?

Thanks in advance...

I really rate mulberry

Have therir bayswwater and it is lined beautifully

The linings are fabric and they are very hard wearing as are the bags. They age amazingly well

Anyway, Marc Jacobs or Bottega Veneta do some understated and well crafted bags

Some of the LV stuff which isn't monogrammed is very nice too

CHOOGIRL · 15/10/2010 08:49

Tods D bag
LV - Epi Range
Bottega Veneta

HotchpotchHoney · 15/10/2010 09:51

take a look at the orla kiely mainline range, i have the burdock slouchy leather and its gorgeous. it does have a pattern punched into the leather but its not blindingly obvious. they have it in a few other designs as well. they also have them in plain leather designs.
Marc jacobs do some lovely bags as well and not always tassles and bling on them, lovely linings and last for ever. try the outnet.com for cheaper prices. also miumiu their alexa like satchel is to die for. really soft squishy leather and smells divine!!!

Balenciaga city bag also very very nice.

balenciaga

whatkungfuthat · 15/10/2010 12:36

I've got an LV Alma bag in Epi black leather with just a tiny logo on the bottom corner that I have had for nearly 10 yrs. I use it to death and still get comments about it as it still looks good. When I bought it (from the LV shop near Bank) they showed me lots of subtle styles that I hadn't seen before, I really like the Passy atm.

gorehaginhellsbum · 15/10/2010 12:59

If I had that kind of money I'd probably go for a Tod's bag though avoiding the Sloane St store.
Like the understatedness(is that a word) of their designs.

can't go wrong with a Chanel quilted bag, or a Delvaux, or LV (but buy from Japan as the standard for that market is much higher).

Or perhaps J&M Davidson.

I have liked bags by Marni, but generally I'd stick to a house that is known for bags, not clothes.

Mulberry is really overpriced and nothing special. Not great leather.

Everything else (Chloe, Burberry etc) is fashiony bollocks and very very overpriced.

otchayaniye · 15/10/2010 14:01

Bottega, I had a bad experience with one. Lovely dove grey intricato bag but seriously just used to melt if the edge so much touched anything.

So beautiful, but not long lasting (which I assume is what you want in an investment bag)

I had a Tod's hobo which lasted years and was really really practical.

Hermes are nice, but I rate Delvaux for their non-ubiquity factor.

HalfTermHero · 15/10/2010 15:19

Hmm. I would go Mulberry first choice but failing that, Chloe do some classic and beautiful bags too. Balenciga also gorgeous. You will have a ball deciding. Good luck and hope you get something perfect.

olderandwider · 15/10/2010 17:52

Longchamps are nice, also Anya Hindmarsh.

Lauriefairycake · 15/10/2010 18:01

Hermes and Delvaux are the only ones to use continuous stitching I think Hmm so that makes them really well crafted.

If I was looking for an investment bag I'd go for Delvaux - I wouldn't go for an investment bag though as I'd get really bored

MarshaBrady · 15/10/2010 18:02

Hermes (not with branding) or Bottega.

Lauriefairycake · 15/10/2010 18:03

this one very, very nice and understated

Hmm Laurie,i see you are not dead after all. So i will stop worrying

Pl excuse the thread crash everyone else

[ hard stare at Laurie]

Meggles76 · 15/10/2010 19:38

Def Delvaux - I go to Bruges every christmas and they have a store in the square. Laurie is right about the continuos stitching which means that it will last you a life time and their designs are classics that will never date. Only wish I had the money

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 15/10/2010 19:51

I just adore my Tods bag. It's donkeys old though (relatively speaking) but YUM YUM YUM.

Can dress up, or dress down, it's not flash, it's just BEAUTIFUL.

Zembo · 15/10/2010 22:07

Which Tod's have you got anonymous?

Maryqueenofchocs · 15/10/2010 22:27

Sorry but I think the Delvauz bags are really boring...yawn. If I had £900 to spend on a bag I would want a little bit of wow or ummmmmm, they are neither imo.

Tatty what do you want this bag for, day/evening/occasional use/everyday?

Do you like Shoulder/Across Body/Top Handle/Clutch/Hobo/Satchel/Slouch??

Give us a steer??

anonymousbrainsnatcher · 15/10/2010 22:32

Zembo I have no idea what it is called, but it is very similar in style/shape to this but is not made of crocodile!!!!!!!!

Instead it is brown grained leather with a metallic tab catch.

yummy bag

I also have four pairs of Tod's shoes.

I'm a bit of an addict Blush

glamourpuss · 15/10/2010 23:40

Definitely miu miu !!!

5DollarShake · 16/10/2010 08:08

I usually like Mulbbery and have a couple but had a bad experience with the alana (though in tan) which isn't lined and did not hold it's shape at all. Normally known for ageing well, this bag looks terrible now and I hardly ever use it. Has put me off Mulberry a bit to be honest.

Another rec for Tods and Bottega Veneta.

Bonsoir · 16/10/2010 09:01

Prada has a massive choice of lovely bags.

Paribus · 16/10/2010 09:12

5DollarShake, have you tried going back to Mulberry and asking them to change it? They did it for me with Bayswater...
